Aaron (scruffynerfer) I have been looking at reading a book by a fantastic author named China Mieville. The book in question is entitled Perdido Street Station and has been highly recommended by some of my friends. I decided to check it out a while ago but do to having a lot of other books to read i decided to just download a sample to remind me when I am looking for a new book, but since then the sample got deleted when i cleaned up my 'sample' collection. Anyway, the other day I was reminded of this book when I seen the authors works in a local book store and seen the whole line of book had a make over and got new artwork. This sparked me to having another look at the book but to my surprise, no longer found it in the kindle store. All of the other books by China are there, including the new artwork but just not that one. Why do you think this would be? is it a licensing issue? I believe this book is his most renowned work so why would he not but that on the kindle store?

Has anyone else noticed strange things like this one the Kindle Store?

Cindy (newtomato) Aaron, are you in the US? If so, I can see it right here for $7.99: http://www.amazon.com/Perdido-Street-...

(Great book, btw!)

message 3: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (scruffynerfer) No I live in the UK. Sorry, should of mentioned that before

message 4: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) Aw, bummer. Well, to answer your other question, I've seen books get temporarily pulled when the publisher is fixing mistakes and releasing a new version. Maybe it will pop back up in a few days?

No, as its due to licencing issues . Tried that trick before :)

Aaron, I'm in the UK. I've noticed this before, but when I've gone to search for the book on paperback (as in search books and not kindle store) I have then gone to other formats under the paperback and the book is there! Must just be an occassional glitch. However, you are correct. Perdido Street Station is not shown available on Kindle. It tells you to select to tell publisher you wish to see it on the kindle. Very strange.

Lisa (lisah1301) I have also just gone to the US link, someone kindly listed above, and changed the .com to .co.uk, but it says that page is not available on UK site, so assume they've taken it away from UK readers, as normally the book would come up.

message 9: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (scruffynerfer) The thing that I also not understand is that why is it available in the us and not the uk. He is an English author, surely we can get the rights to the book in the country the author is from. If he was American it would be a little less frustrating.

Yes I agree! Try contacting the author.

Publishing rights are increasingly more confusing as publishers are still trying to figure out the new world of epublishing. It's possible that his contract for the book with that publisher expired, so they have to stop selling his ebooks. He could be in negotiations for a new contract with them or he might be shopping it around with other publishers.

As to why the print book would still be available - if the contract expires or is terminated, the publisher can still sell off the remaining books but cannot print more.

It could also have been taken down so that it can be released - fresh editing, a new cover, etc. - and it will be back up for sale within a few weeks.

Sydney (sydneyelaine) I don't think 'To Kill a mockingbird' is on there...

Paul Donovan | 26 comments I honestly think they are trying to get to everything. But it is a business, so books that have the potential to sell the most will go up first. Faulkner is FINALLY coming in August!

Deborah (dbartelt01) I also have found a lot of books listed on this site not to be available in Kindle. I also request it to be added on the Amazon site but nothing seems to change. I love my Kindle just wish they had more books in art history and nonfiction available.

Karen B. (raggedy11) Do you guys check the Amazon free books for kindle sites? Right now that's mostly what I am looking for ... free e-books. I do understand that Kindle is going to be available for download from libraries soon. The way it works, as I understand is that any book in e-format can be downloaded from there.

As to the thing that some said about the publisher that is so true. And sometimes they pull a book or allow only a limited number of copies available because of the old supply and demand issue. If we hear of a good book and all run out to get it,and the shelves don't have it, we'll figure it MUST be great and want it more.

message 16: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dbartelt01) Can you explain the library and kindle connection? I haven't heard of it before...

message 17: by Cindy (last edited Jun 11, 2011 01:51PM) (new)

Cindy (newtomato) Steven, here's an article that explains the announcement. There's no date set, just later this year we're supposed to have ebook library lending through Overdrive available for Kindle.

message 18: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) I could be wrong, but I think our reference librarian told me that I can download to my computer as a PDF file and then download to Kindle. But something about that doesn't make sense. I do know he said I can download a book directly to my computer. I still have PCkindle and I think I have a KOBO similar application.

message 19: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 370 comments the pdf file that is currently available is an ADE (Adobe Digital Edition) which means you have to know your kindles PID in order to access it (there is a way to do this, I just don't know how) - but you can't just download and transfer - unfortunately...

Karen B. (raggedy11) thanks

I'm in Canada but I can upload pdf files to my Kindle. I can even upload MS Word files. I was given my own personal Kindle email address when I registered my kindle. I just email the files as attachments to that address and they appear on my Kindle. Kindle files display the best. You may experience some formatting glitches with other files, but it's workable.

message 22: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) Eileen,

Yes, you can look at un-encrypted PDF files, but the PDF files that libraries offer as ebooks for lending through Overdrive are encrypted with Adobe digitial edition DRM. Right now, Kindle doesn't support ADE, so no Overdrive yet.

Olivia (livi195) | 3 comments help, my kindle just has reset itself ie all my books have disappeared! I tried re-downloading the books onto my kindle via usb but i cant open the files =( p.s. i dont have wireless so yeah... Please answer it's an emergency, we're going on a road trip till the end of the year and i need to read 5 books!!!!!

message 24: by Karen M (new)

Karen M Call Amazon Customer Service. They should be able to talk you through this issue.

message 25: by Helen (new)

Helen It is annoying when licensing doesn't work in the kindlers favour. I read a 5 part series, books 1, 2, 4 & 5 were on kindle but wasn't. I emailed the author and she told me that copyright still belonged to the publisher so why they didn't want that part out with the others is a mystery - they didn't reply to their email.

message 26: by Michael (new)

Michael | 15 comments Is it possible to order Kindle books in every kindle store from Amazon around the world or are we limited to the next one? Are there any geografic limitations?
