Mandy (mandypants) Ok, so this is my first "official" buddy read. I figure we'd just post questions/comments/impressions as we go. I hope I don't super spoil anything for you. So...

Writing style: Brockmann seems to switch POV pretty often. Does that help the story along or is it just confusing? Also, what do you think about her switching between the present and WWII?

Relationships: Do you buy into the relationship between Kelly and Tom? Sixteen years have past with no contact and they're both still holding a flame over one almost night. Realistic or improbable?

What do you think of Joe and Charles' relationship? Can you be both bff and employer/employee with the same person? Does that cause a power struggle?

Characters: Brockmann has painted David as an uber-geek. Did she go too over the top and lose reality points? Too stereotypical?

What about Mallory? David's initial attraction to her is so based on her physical appearance. Does Brockmann describe her appearance clearly enough for the reader to get a good picture of her?

I was warned that this book isn't very good and that the series just gets better and better. But, I'm surprised. So far, I'm enjoying it and it doesn't seem bad at all. Maybe that's just because I've been reading such poo lately that this is so much better by comparison.

I'm excited to know what you think. I'll keep reading and posting.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments FYI I looked and my library didn't have this one. I was surprised.

message 4: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Mine doesn't have it either and neither does Marla's. They have the most recent ones at mine, but not the first couple. Super poopy. I gave up and ordered the rest of the series from BWB this morning.

message 5: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I go to thrift shops all the time and will have to check and see if they have this one. I know I've seen a ton of her books on the shelves. That's one of the ways I usually use to find new authors. If I see a lot of an author's books and they've been out for awhile it usually suggests the author is good. If they're a newer author and I see a ton on the shelves that usually suggest they're not so good. Just a little something I've noticed lately.

message 6: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Ha. Makes total sense. Last time I went to a used bookstore, I couldn't find a Kresley Cole book to save my life. :-) Betterworldbooks had all of Brockmann's series for around $3.98 a book with an additional 15% or 25% off with the summer sale. I didn't think I would do better than that. So, I bought them all. :-D

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I just read this book and loved it. Can I pop in now and then?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Writing style: Brockmann seems to switch POV pretty often. Does that help the story along or is it just confusing? Also, what do you think about her switching between the present and WWII?
While I have heard complaints, the flashback story to WWII didn’t bother me at all; in fact, I loved it! Totally held my interest. Go figure.

Relationships: Do you buy into the relationship between Kelly and Tom? Sixteen years have passed with no contact and they're both still holding a flame over one almost night. Realistic or improbable?
I have actually meet several couples that carried a torch for one another for over fifty years and re-connected, so yes, it was realistic.

What do you think of Joe and Charles' relationship? Can you be both bff and employer/employee with the same person? Does that cause a power struggle?
I loved Joe & Charles’ relationship. What a crack-up these two were. To cantankerous old curmudgeons. I have had two very good friends who were my employers and remain friends with them to this day. Of course, both were my friends before they became my boss. Never was a problem. Well, I think one other employee made a derogatory comment when I brought in soup for my friend once. I just told her I had been cooking for her for years and wasn’t going to stop now just to appease her displaced sense of ethical indignation. (It wasn’t like I didn’t bring food in for others also.)

Characters: Brockmann has painted David as an uber-geek. Did she go too over the top and lose reality points? Too stereotypical?
It didn’t even register, as I found him adorable. I’ve read a few people were offended, but I kind of scratch my head why? He is a wonderful person. But I’m not of that heritage; guess I could be more aware of ethnicity. (Though I’ve had enough “diversity” training to last a life time.) I am surrounded by geeks and I know they are all very different individuals. My ex is an uber geek and he has always made a point of trying new things so as to be a “well-rounded” person.

What about Mallory? David's initial attraction to her is so based on her physical appearance. Does Brockmann describe her appearance clearly enough for the reader to get a good picture of her?
Crystal.

Mandy (mandypants) I guess I'll answer my own questions. :-)

Writing Style: There was once, in the very beginning, that the point of view switched so quickly that I had to figure out whose it was. But, I think it helps in understanding the characters when you can get inside their heads with their POV. I like the WWII flashbacks. I think they were just the right length. Not so long that you forget the main story and not so short that they're a nuisance.

Relationships: I didn't believe in the whole harboring feelings for a high school fling of a couple of kisses. But, once Brockmann described the months of soul baring discussions by the swing and how Tom was the only person seeing through Kelly's well constructed facade, I could see it. I think I would still have a connection with a few HS friends that I've had meaningful conversations with, even if I haven't seen them in years. Maybe not a sexual connection, but definitely a tie.

I'm not sure I could have an actual BFF sort of relationship with an employer. I think the fact that the person is signing my paychecks would influence my behavior too much. Then again, I'm not sure I would have a close friendship with such a dramatic back-story like Charles and Joe's. I'm a grudge holder. :-)

Characters: I have a soft spot for geeks. I may not understand them, but I like them. Tall, geeky, thin, quiet, white guy is totally my MO. Initially, I did think Brockmann went too far with her stereotype. Then, I looked over at my husband and thought, "Heinlein: Check, Babylon Five: Check, Comic Book Heroes: Check, Glasses: Check, Computer Obsession: Check...Oh, fine. It's believable." I didn't think Brockmann gained anything by making him Asian flavored or with the whole taped glasses bit.

Maybe, it's just me, but I didn't get a clear picture of Mallory's face and hair. I understood her super heroine's body and big eyes, but not the rest. I guess dyed blue black and cut messy isn't enough for me to get an idea. Feel free to post pictures of what you see when you think Mallory or Nightshade!

Mandy (mandypants) Ugh. I tried posting this and goodreads didn't cooperate. Here I go, again.

Sorry. I'm not trying to hog the topic. I'm just trying to keep the discussion going before I move on to another book. Feel free to add comments or questions...please?

Questions about the END of the book

1. On pg. 73, Kelly debates with Tom about Joe’s one true love. She states, “‘Do you think he’s right?’ she asked Tom. ‘That we each have only one chance at true love? Do you think there even is such a thing as true love?’” What do you think?

2. David and Mallory have planned to go to college together then get married. Do you think their relationship will be successful? Or are serious relationships when you’re young doomed?

3. Apparently, Tom is really big on thinking about what could have been. Do David and Mallory represent Tom and Kelly’s “what if”?

4. What did you think about the big baddie and the action sequences?

5. Charles’ actions save the town, but doom him. Would you have made the same decision? Why or why not? Does your answer change if the dying of cancer aspect was gone?

7. Overall, what did you think about this book? Are you planning on reading more in the series?

message 14: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Um...yes? Sorry? Do I need to go sit in a corner or something now? I even put it down and walked away for hours at a time. It's only like 392 pages long.

message 15: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Nope. You're like me I start a book and if it's really good I can't stop myself from finishing it.

message 16: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I'm at a sick friend's house. It is late at night and I don't have my book with me, and I’m on their computer, but I'll do the best I can with my answers.

1. On pg. 73, Kelly debates with Tom about Joe’s one true love. She states, “‘Do you think he’s right?’ she asked Tom. ‘That we each have only one chance at true love? Do you think there even is such a thing as true love?’” What do you think?
I think each of us is different in our response to different types of love. Some people don’t want to open themselves up to another kind of love after they find someone they consider their “one true love”. For many reasons. The risk for pain is too great. They have idealized the deceased person in their memory. The person was irreplaceable. I also believe love sneaks up on us when we are least looking for it. There can be different types of love for the different phases of your life (even if they happen to be with the same person). I even believe there are some lucky individuals who find more than one soul mate in their lifetime.

2. David and Mallory have planned to go to college together then get married. Do you think their relationship will be successful? Or are serious relationships when you’re young doomed?
I like to think it has a good shot of making it. I think they make a good match. I’ve known several couples, who were high-school (or college) sweethearts, and make it through the hurdles of life over the long haul. Due to human nature, and individual growth, during most marriages people are closer at times than at others; the hard part is weathering the distances.

3. Apparently, Tom is really big on thinking about what could have been. Do David and Mallory represent Tom and Kelly’s “what if”?
I think so, to some degree.

4. What did you think about the big baddie and the action sequences?
I was thinking there would be more drama and action for the big build-up. I also thought this b/c I’ve read SB’s other books and there was a lot more in them. Still, I loved this book.

5. Charles’ actions save the town, but doom him. Would you have made the same decision? Why or why not? Does your answer change if the dying of cancer aspect was gone?
Yes, I would have made the same decision. I think being older makes me more willing to sacrifice. Without question, if I was dying of cancer, it would make it even easier.

I’ll answer #6 & #7 when I get home tomorrow/today.

Great questions Mandy! Thanks for posting them.

I like that statement a lot. I totally agree with you that love isn't static but it evolves.

message 19: by Marla (new)

Marla Schwartz (marlalynns) Writing style: Brockmann seems to switch POV pretty often. Does that help the story along or is it just confusing? Also, what do you think about her switching between the present and WWII?

I loved the fact that she gave us a lot more insight into the past, but it wasn't all at once.

Relationships: Do you buy into the relationship between Kelly and Tom? Sixteen years have past with no contact and they're both still holding a flame over one almost night. Realistic or improbable?

It could be realistic since they did have a crush on each other for so long.

What do you think of Joe and Charles' relationship? Can you be both bff and employer/employee with the same person? Does that cause a power struggle?

I love the relationship between them. I think that because of their history in WWII, they don't see each other as employer/employee.

Characters: Brockmann has painted David as an uber-geek. Did she go too over the top and lose reality points? Too stereotypical?

She definitely did not go over the top. I can honestly say that I know guys just like him-lol.

What about Mallory? David's initial attraction to her is so based on her physical appearance. Does Brockmann describe her appearance clearly enough for the reader to get a good picture of her?

I love Mallory! I think that how I picture her based on Brockmanns description, is probably not what she pictures.

That's what I think, too. I just didn't feel as though my picture matched Brockmann's.

Book Synopsis:
After a near-fatal head injury, navy SEAL lieutenant Tom Paoletti catches a terrifying glimpse of an international terrorist in his New England hometown. When he calls for help, the navy dismisses the danger as injury-induced imaginings. In a desperate, last-ditch effort to prevent disaster, Tom creates his own makeshift counterterrorist team, assembling his most loyal officers, two elderly war veterans, a couple of misfit teenagers, and Dr. Kelly Ashton-the sweet "girl next door" who has grown into a remarkable woman. The town's infamous bad boy, Tom has always longed for Kelly. Now he has one final chance for happiness, one last chance to win her heart, and one desperate chance to save the day . . .

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments I finished this one Christmas evening after all the festivities were over.

I don't usually like flashback stories but I liked this one a lot. I thought the author handled it very well and it certainly explained Charles' behavior. (view spoiler)

Having all the different storylines was a little confusing at times and seemed to spread out the intensity slightly. And teenage romances are not normally something I care for. This one was sweet and somewhat awkward. (view spoiler)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 4205 comments Leslie....(view spoiler)

It kept my attention though and not in a bad way, so I still gave it four stars. There is potential here. I haven't read any other books by this author, so who knows how her style has changed since this was written.
