((Right...))

There was only a small sliver of moon that night. With hardly any light upon the streets of Kandin's capital. Vincent slipped along the stalls and shops, keeping close to the shadows and detouring along darkened alleyways, far from any torch-bearing patrol. He was close... very close now. It had taken him a week to pass through the battle front where the Trease army battled a constant struggle against the conniving Kandin. Even then, it had taken a ferry to ride the large river that stretched across the front behind the battlefield until he finally had reached the gates before night fell.
This was one of the nights, one of the nights when it would collapse a pillar to the foundation of Kandin rule.

Beverly gazed out from her castle window, her ink black hair nearly blending in with the night. All was still and calm. The only movement, it seemed, was the cool night breeze. Even the stars seemed to be dimmer. Beverly leaned against window sill, still deep in thought, when there was a sudden tug on her dress. She looked away from the freedom of the night and frowned at her little sister.
"Bev? Read me a story...?"
Beverly sighed and took a fleeting last glance out the window.
"you should be in bed, Lucile."
"I'm not tired."
Beverly's frown deepened and she reached down to grab her little sisters hand. She quielt led Lucile down the majestic hall to the youngest princesses' room.

Rene *add me as a friend!* | 13 comments Karina followed Beverly with a tired sigh. Lucile was such a nice kid-princess- but her young energy could get tiresome. Especially at...Karina supposed it was about two in the morning.
She forced herself not to yawn with some effort and pasted a smile on her face instead. "Beverly, after you read, you should get some sleep. Don't forget that tomorrow morning is the..."
SHe paused forgetting for a second waht was going on the next day. "You need to get Some Sleep." She said to cover up her forgetfullness.

"I suppose. I think this whole festivle is ridiculous. Father thinks that it might cheer the population to have he and his troups parade around and see who can figh the best or shoot the best bull's-eye. I think it's a waste of time and energy. I wish I didn't have to attend." Beverly frowned and tucked her sister in.
"A Festival for Fame, he says." Beverly straightened up and faced her maid gravely. "Ha! A Festival for Fools is more fitting."
"Beverly, I want a story." Lucile whined.
"Oh, very well." Beverly said grumpily. "Which book shall I read from?"
"Not a book, Bev. I want to hear about the Blue Jay!"
Beverly looked at her sister sadly. she sat and brushed the crinkles out of her dress.
"Karina, you may go to bed. I'll retire once I've told Lucile a story." she said. Beverly ran a hand through her sleek black hair.
"You wish to hear a story of the Blue Jay, hmm?"
"Yes, please!" Lucile cheered. Bev sighed and bit her lip in thought. hen she looked down at her little sister and leaned forward.
"Alright then. Once upon a time..."
Half an hour later, Beverly proudly and quietly shut the door to her sleeping sisters room. She sighed and rested her forehead against the door.
((sorry, Rene, for kinda controllin gthe situation there--if you wanted your charrie to be awake, she could've stayed in the room or waited in the hall.))

Vincent came to a halt, glancing down at the note left by several spies that provided a route for his entrance into the gates.
"Idiots," He muttered, glancing up at the well guarded walls. The patrols were thick and unrelenting in their dedication. The pace that they set between their laps left only a short minute for him to leap the wall, which he unfortunately was ill equipped for. Vincent examined the note. Blind spot in the south wall, five minute interval between watches.

Vincent snorted, the supposed five minutes had shrunk, and he couldn't afford to risk his position after making it so far. I'll wait then, He decided. A minor setback, it will be mended soon enough The Trease assassin whirled around and headed back for his safe house across the city.

((Sorry, when you mentioned a festival I just had to do something with a dramatic flair!))

"Troubles, sister?" Orion asked, as he came down the hall towards his room.

Rene *add me as a friend!* | 13 comments ((Ugh. I know I haven't been on lately. My house is on the market and I'm really busy packingg))

Karina was waiting outside Lucielle's door. She looked at Beverly with a slight frown when she walked out. "Miss..." Karina stiffled a yawn.
"I know you don't like festivals, however..."
She trailed off as she saw Orion. "Hello." She said thinking Why can't you all ever seem to sleep?!?

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments Elliot had found himself leaning against one of the walls of the dungeon. He hadn't yet cleaned himself since the small fray that had happened mere hours ago, but he couldn't shake the scene from his mind. There was supposed to be a festival somewhere in the Kandin kingdom, and yet, why of all places, he and his group had been ambushed! Why they were all supposed be getting ready to parade and celebrate for whatever reason pleased them. He didn't understand the concept of parties, especially at a time like this. In the midst of war when the Trease soldiers could easily come and kill the lot of them since they were all assembled together in one place.
He shook his head and looked down the silent halls of the dungeon. If he listened closely he could hear the breaths of the prisoners. "Dirty rats," he huffed. "I don't understand why the lot of you are still even alive."

Beverly looked at her brother and gave a small smile. He was so brave and regal--everyone trusted him, and one day, he would make a strong king. But she feared, as always for his safety in battle.
"Only thinking, dear brother," she replied, "about the...festival." she said the sord with slight disgust.
***
"Well, I reckon," a voice called out from the filthy dungeon, "that we're all just too pretty to die."
The Kandin men perked up at the sound of the voice, and a few were brave enough and strong enough to smile.
The Blue Jay looked up from the slimy prison floor and grinned.

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments "I can wipe off that pretty face of yours," Elliot called out. "And then you can writhe on the floor. Speak your name." He knew he shouldn't be getting worked up, but after that ambush he wanted them dead even if they had no part in it.

The Blue Jay's eyes flashed brightly against the cold, cruel dungeon.
"Why, my name's Jay. Blue Jay, if you wish to be formal. Of course, you're welcome to visit my cell any time you wish--it's open to all sorts of visitors. Why, I've had three rats stop by already. A fourth wouldn't be out of my way, so feel free to stop by."

message 18: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments He gritted his teeth and pulled out his sword. Stop, and just walk back up the stairs. You don't need this.. But he usually ignored his more logical thoughts and continued on his rash and impulsive hunt for this Blue Jay. He stopped right in front of his cell, his blue eyes cold.
His sword clicked against the bars and he just grinned. "I don't see why you're calling me a rat when you're the one living like one. Caged, soiled... You're nothing but filth and trash. No one would miss you."

message 19: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 618 comments Mod
The Blue Jay stood and looked around before shoving his hands into his pockets and smiling pleasently.
"Living like a rat, hmm? Well, i disagree-- I've traveled all over Trease, right under you and your men's noses and this is possibly the nicest place i've seen so far." The Blue Jay said lightly, looking around again.

message 20: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments Elliot raised and eyebrow and just laughed. "I don't see why you're bragging, we caught you--" he stopped and looked over the boy's stature for a moment before realizing, "I brought you here."

Lizzy | 618 comments Mod
"Yes. Yes, you did do that." The Blue Jay said agreeably. "Which is too bad, because you're the one they'll blame first when I escape."

message 22: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments "You'll be dead before that happens," Elliot gritted. His knuckles were white now from gripping the hilt of his sword. "You Kandins think you can do just about whatever you want and can get away with everything. I promise you, that won't happen, not with me around."

message 23: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 618 comments Mod
"If I can't get away with anything, then how did I manage to get you so..." Blue Jay paused, looking for the right word. "...mad?" He grinned and winked. "Don't you worry about my death, ol' boy. I don't need to think about something to be able to do it. I just do it. A talent you poor Trease chaps could pick up. The charges and plots I've see you lads cook up take hours." Blue Jay groaned sarcastically at the thought and then stopped mid-groan as if a thought just struck him. "Say, if you had actually done something just the other day instead of thought and planned it out, maybe you wouldn't have had to put a few men to sleep under the dirt, hmm?"

message 24: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments Elliot's grip loosened around his handle, and his eyes, narrowed from before grew wide. He knew? How did he know about the ambush? What fool decided to mention it down here.
"That was not our mistake," he answered. "Our soldiers were not looking for a fight. It was just patrolling. It was your foul play that got some of us killed!"

message 25: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 618 comments Mod
"Foul play?" Blue jay repeated, pretending to act confused. he laughed--his head was tipped back and eyes crinkled up. "Boy, this is war! There's nothing fair about it!" He grew serious. " You think this road is all guts, glory and laws? You're very wrong, and it;s time to wake up. It's blood and survival. But you know what?" Jay leaned a little closer to the bars and squinted into Elliot's eyes. "I think you already knew that, didn't you? You already know what it's like, and here you are stuck in the dungeons, talking to some cheeky prisoner when you'd rather be out there saving you're country." Blue Jay gavea small smirk.
"b/ut that path has it's quirks. i mean, look at me!" he smiled and took a step back, arms outstreatched and blue eyes sparkleing.

message 26: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments As much as Elliot hated the Kandins. he had to give Blue some respect. But it was so small that it was hardly respect at all. "You continue to talk and rot in this cell, while I do exactly what you said--save my kingdom from the likes of you." But Elliot could not move from his spot because he did not want to face the castle floors again, nor his surviving group of soldiers because some were missing and he couldn't get over the fact that they had to be people closest to him. But Blue was right that was war.

"I am, admittedly, a bit of a talker." Blue Jay said with a sigh. "It. I believe, is one of my biggest flaws. And I do, have a lot of flaws. He smiled at the man in front of him.
"I never did catch your name, soldier." He stuck his hand out friendly-like.

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments Elliot looked at him in disgust, but in a very high and proud manor he flaunted his name. "Elliot Trease--yours?" he ignored the hand because shaking hands with the enemy was against his moral code.

Blue Jay pulled his hand back like a gentleman, still smiling. "Kandin calls me Blue Jay. My mother calls me James. You, I reckon, are going to call me whatever you'd like, Mr. Elliot Trease." Blue Jay glanced at Elliot with a sturdy respect (the man, had, after all, caught hm when no one else had been able to). "How long had you been fighting, Mr. Elliot Trease?"

((haha, i love how Elliot and Blue Jay are--they act like they've been worst enimies and best friends for years.... :D perfect personality clash. i love it!))

"Seven, hmm? That's impressive!" Blue Jay said, leaning back a bit. "I didn't get to use a sword 'till my late teens. most of my work involves being...invisable. I grew up with a poor family--5 baby siblings, father died in teh war," he said casually. "I worked a lot, but eventually that wasn't enough. by the time I was ten I was a thief and, sadly, a blasted good one. But I didn't care much for the consequences. I was just a boy trying to best by his family. Do you have any family?"

message 32: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments ((Agreed!))

Elliot had quite a few brothers, emphasis on had. His throat closed up for a moment, but he regain his composure a moment after. "The royal family let me take their name after my brothers sacrificed their lives to protect him. I don't believe in sacrifice. It's a selfish deed to do."

message 33: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 618 comments Mod
"Leaves the rest of us bloody miserable, doesn't it?" blue Jay said quietly. "They must've been very brave, if the Royal Family did let you take their name. I've got four sisters and one brother, myself. My brother," Jay scoffed bitterly, "thinks that the war is some glory road. He thinks he's gonna be some bleeding hero. His girl encourages it. Makes the rest of my family upset." Jay picked at an invisable peice of lint at his clothing and then looked up at Elliot.
"you're different, Mr. Trease. I mean, besides the whole ' passion for the country' thing that all these lads have cooked up in their minds. I don't know much, and i don't really know you. But i know that one day, you'll do something great. I can't tell if it'll be soemthing very good for the rest of us, or soemthing very bad, but I can telly you've got soemthing i up your sleeves." He paused and smiled. "sorry. I don't mean to go all serious. I find that when i'm stuffed into this cozy little cell of mine, I tend to make faster assumptions. espeacially when word in the dungeons is that the ransom for me has been dropped. I can see that they've got the gallows working just fine an' i might be taking the long walk soon."

message 34: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments "It has," Elliot confirmed. "We'd rather have the infamous 'Blue Jay' dead than alive. No ransom is worth it," he mumbled and sheathed his sword, realizing that he was still holding the blade in his hand. "James, you said--I'll be the one to take you down that long walk more than likely than the rest of my cohorts, but if you go with me quietly I will have lost any respect I had toward you. Just another sacrifice to your country--a martyr. I want a fight."

"Didn't you hear me apoligize about my sure to be brilliant escape?" Blue Jay asked with a raised eyebrow. He surpressed a smile and put his hands behind his back thoughtfully. "And i figure, even if i don't make the escape, which I most likely will, they're gonna turn to each other in Kandin years from now, " jay's eyes lit with feirce hope and pride, "and they're gonna say 'say, remember that Blue Jay? He put up one heckuva fight.'..." Blue jay sighed and shook his head and returned his gaze to Elliot. "Oh, pardon me. I hate it when I ramble on like that. I've been told that it's very annoying."

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments Elliot was rolling his eyes. "I don't care if I remembered or not. Glory is a foolish thing in my opinion. In years come, not all legends and stories will hold truth anymore. Even the most notorious villains will be made into heroes. I'd rather be forgotten than have my life twisted into something it wasn't."

"You make a good point, Mr. Elliot Trease," Jay said thoughtfully. "so, I guess the trick is to make sure the thing you do to try to be remembered by is completely and totally ridiculous in the first part. If it can't get much more insane than it already is, then what's to change?" he asked with a wink. He let a moment of quiet settle between prisoner and guard before he became a little more serious. His voice became a tad hoarse and tired.
"So, do they have an, er....expected death day for me?"
**
Beverly looked at her brother with a mixture of admiration and exasperation.
"i just think that Father should be focusing on trying to reach a term of peace instead of trying to boost the soldiers egos, when most of them could do with less self-esteem. They don't need the Festival to parade up and down the streets." Beverly shook her head. "Sorry, brother. I do not mean any disrespect on the brave troops. I suppose I'm still upset that Father won't even try to help the Blue Jay, who, as we speak is probably miserable and being tortured for information about Kandin." Beverly shuddered.

"Im sorry for Blue Jay too, sister, but we cannot afford to lower our guard for one prisoner, or else the Trease will invade, and we will have practially no defense." Orion defended his father.

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments "Its not official yet. King Trease is waiting for the most optimal time, but from the information and orders I have received, it looks as if it will be the night of a new moon--barely a week away," Elliot said. "You and a few others will be hung at midnight as to not cause any commotion. But prior you will be tortured for any information at all. If you or anyone has supplied us with enough secrets it will dictate whether you live or you don't."

message 43: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 618 comments Mod
Beverly desperately tried to keep her temper in check.
"So, we can lower our defense for some silly games and compitions but we can't try to save the man who's nearly single handedly brought this awful war to a close?" Beverly scoffed and turned to look out the window, her fingers curling into helpless fists. What was she, the middle child and a sour, bitter young woman going to do about the war? What could she do? Beverly had never been so frustrated in her entire life. Her brother could charge down the Trease scum that attacked their walls. Her little sister could be the shining ray of hope for the people. What could Beverly do, other than miserably sit back and dream of a better future?
**

"Midnight? Torture? How dreadfully boring." Blue Jay sighed sarcastically. "If only you lads could provide me with a challenge." He then laughed. "It doesn't matter if any of us Kandin boys spill a secret or two-- even if that person was left to live, he'd be a dead man walking. What country would let him have a home to come to, a family to work for, a woman to love? He would be hated by all. So," Blue Jay said warmly. "Trease can torture us as much as you'd all like, but you won't get a word out of a single one of us." blue Jay said proudly. He then paused. "That sounded awful haughty, didn't it? i suppose i can even the ground by telling you any of the prisoners Kandin has taken wouldn't speak a word either?"

message 44: by ♫Krista♫ (new)

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments "A friend of mine once told me 'To spoil is the most heinous crime one could commit'. Not one Trease soul would dare utter a word," Elliot said in the same honorable tone. And then he actually grinned at Blue Jay. "How much do you mean to your kingdom? To your family? Would never seeing your mother, sisters, brother be worth not saying anything, though?"

"Back at home," blue Jay smiled, "i've heard even the princess likes to tell made up wild stories about my grand escapes or daring missions. Of course, I've gotten a big head abotu it-- over confident and all--"
"Not true, Blue Jay!" a hoarse Kandin voice called from another cell. Blue Jay looked over, interested.
"and," another voice called, "if you've gotten a big head about it, you've every reason to! What about that time down by the Northern Trease/ Kandin boarders?"
"oh please," yet another tired voice called, "that wasn't even half as daring as the time he escaped that boarder patrol and had to swim across the bleeding Halving Rivers!"
"Say, Blue Jay, sir, is it true that you saved the princesses beverly and Lucile when they slipped into a ditch a few years back?" another voice called.
"Of course not. I didn't see Princess Lucile at all. Just her older sister, and the horse was stuck in a bit of mud, nothing more." Blue Jay shook his head.
"Most of it's rumors, but it usually helps a man like me stay under the radar." he smiled and leaned against the wall next to him. "Would never seeing my family again be worth keeping Kandin's secret?" he repeated thoughtfully. "Well, Mr. Elliot Trease, I'd rather have theirs tears over my dead, battered body then their hatred."

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

"Sister, our defenses arent lowered. Father is holding the festival for two reasons, the first is what I already told you, and the second is to bait the Trease into attacking so we can send a unit around them to attack the Trease castle. I am sorry i didnt tell you before, but Father asked me to keep it a secret till i deemed it nessisary to tell you." Orion explained.

♫Krista♫ (kristabobista) | 440 comments "You Kandin rats keep your mouths shut!" Elliot screamed to the dungeon halls. "I don't want to hear another word at of any of you!" His face went red and his nose wrinkled when he yelled, but when he turned back to Blue Jay, he was composed. Elliot mulled over Blue's words thoughtfully before saying, "I guess it's just a soldier's moral then. I would do the same if the roles were reversed." Elliot paused and leaned against the prison bars, making sure to keep his sword away from reach--he didn't trust Blue Jay at all. "James, if I were king, I would not call for your death. You dying would only make you a martyr, and that would put the odds in Kandin's favor."

By the time Vincent made it back to the safe house, he was fuming at his lost chance. All the travel, all the time wasted just to get to this disgusting city when he could have been back in Trease, enjoying the cool roof gardens and warm heat. It was too cold in Kandin, their nights met with rains and snow for half a year. He shook his head at the absurdness of the inhabitants and their cold climate. As soon as he slipped into the dark alley way and into a small wooden door against a building. Already the skies were being tinged with pink, people were rising early in celebration for the festival. Last chance, Vincent thought. This would be his best opportunity to set plans into action. By the next night, the Kandin armies would be decimated, and with any luck, the Kandin line would come to an end.

The dungeon fell into a silence embedded with hatred, but the Blue jay looked At Elliot with even more admiration. The man was obviously Trease, but he seemed smarter--different then the rest of the the Trease. Perhaps it was the fact that they were sharing a mutual conversation, soldier to soldier, or perhaps this Trease man was in a very good mood. The Blue Jay wasn't sure. But he knew one thing--
"I think I would like it very much if you were king, Elliot." the Blue Jay said thoughtfully.
**
Beverly sighed. "I do not pretend to think I deserve the right to know of our Father's plans in war. But if I may so bold to say that despite our Kandin, stubborn belief that the Trease are stupid, narrow minded people, we need to accept the possibility that they will be prepared for a raid in their capital during the Festival." Beverly frowned and tugged her dark hair away from her pale face. "Forgive me, brother, for being so forward. I know whatever father decides will be for the benifit of the people. If the raid is successful, I hope it will be the final one. If only this war was over. I'm so tired of the fighting along the borders."

((I think I might have an idea. I'll post it in plot talk.))
