I feel that everyone feels that there is a part of them that isn't as "normal" as everyone else. So you can relate to how Evie is feeling in some degree.
I think that might be why a lot of people really like this book... because we all feel out of place sometimes. I also think that is why Cassia related so well to Lend. He was normal to her. He went to school, had a family, a driver's license.

I thought it was interesting that "normal" is really what the majority do.

I think Evie just wanted to belong, to have company and share experiences with others.

Growing up I was a navy brat and I remember {with a good degree of teen angst} that all I wanted is a "normal" life and that meant growing up with the same friends in the same town, and maybe having extended family near enough to come over to see on a frequent basis.
For my husband, it was "normal" to not have family obligations all the time and move away from the place you grew up. In his eyes, it was not normal to stay in the same place all your life. "Normal" people would not want to live in his small town, instead they lived in bigger cities with more opportunities.
