The Lovely Bones vs. Before I Fall

Hi all,
Have you read these novels? What did you think of them? Which do you prefer?

These two novels have a similar plot and this is why I chose to read the two stories to compare them. I first read The Lovely Bones and while in a bookshop later, I found Before I Fall which had a sticker on its front cover saying something along the lines of if you liked The Lovely Bones, then you’ll enjoy this…I don’t normally fall for these marketing ploys, however the prologue interested me and I was curious to see how similar or different these novels were from one another....

Hey people,
In my personal opionion I thought they were both the same but very different. I mean, come on, one was set in High school and included the valentines day roses and popularity factors and that sort of thing, whereas the other was bout full on murder.
I must say I think I referred The Lovely Bones. Ahh I mean Before I fall. Damn I suck at making decision. No, but finally I think I am gonna have to go with Before I fall. It was less intense and I could relate to it more.

i prefer The Lovely bones somehow it is deeper then Before I fall maybe it just me :p but this is my opinion

Personal preference... Before I Fall, in my opinion, isn't as emotionally tramatic, haunting, and gripping as The Lovely Bones. I read The Lovely Bones when it was first released years ago, it stayed with me - resonated. I find that I have to reach for my copy every few years to reread... can I say I will want to do the same for Before I Fall, no.

I couldn't get into The Lovely Bones but loved Before I Fall. Personal preference. I preferred the "opportunity to do better" slant versus the rape/murder plot.

I think they are two entirely different books. First the main characters are not at all alike and I think the intended audience is not even the same.

Lovely Bones was about a life not lived, and written for adults. Before I Die was written about the life you have lived to date and is for teens.

Just my opinion. I liked Lovely Bones, but hated that last little ghostly thing at the end; loved Before I Fall and it's fast pacing and character development.

Gretchen I agree they really are nothing alike other then they include the hereafter and a girl. However, that is a good many books.

I'm with Betty. I completely preferred Before I Fall. Lovely Bones fell short for me. I hated how the killer died at the end. plus the being possessed by the ghost to have sex with the "never was" boyfriend. Honestly I thought I would love Lovely Bones and enjoyed the book till about 2/3rd's of the way through.

I don't see how these books are similar. 'The Lovely Bones' invovle a murdered girl looking down at her family from heaven as they continue their lives without her. 'Before I Fall' is about a girl who relives the last day of her life seven times in a row, and each time she attempts to change something. I did like both of them, but 'The Lovely Bones' is more of an adult book, while 'Before I Fall' is written for teens.

The Lovely bones for sure

i don't really know how they were the same. i guess the vague idea maybe but i thought the lovely bones was very different. the lovely bones to me was all about susie living her life through her family and coming to understand her death and what it means to live and love

i thought before i fall was about a shallow girl transforming into her better half by starting to understand the suffering of others and how she impacts the world. personally i like before i fall better than the lovely bones. the lovely bones just seemed like constant repetition but before i fall was a mature novel about what it means to truly live. it was beautiful and still is one of my favorite books

I think Yumi summed it up perfect. I liked both books but don't think that they are very similar. Before I read Before I Fall I was concerned about the repetition but the story intrigued me enough to pick it up. I'm glad I did and really liked living through each transformation of the main character.

If I had to chose I may say Before I Fall, but it's been a while since I read The Lovely Bones so I think I'll call it a tie.

before i fall i think lovly bones was stupid

Before I Fall was an emotional rollercoaster for me. It was sad, funny at times, and I really came to enjoy the main character as she was a genuinely good person, who was in the wrong crowd. The Lovely Bones I didn't enjoy as much. And I agree with Betty, the "opportunity to do better" is a much more satisfying theme because it makes you think about your own actions and has a lasting affect on you.

I read both of the books,i prefer Before I Fall. Both books are tragic, mysterious and epic but Before I Fall made total impact to me.

Before I Fall all the way!

I didn't like either of them that much. I did read a book called A Heartbeat Away by Rachel Ann Nunes which has a similar plot to The Lovely Bones but it was somehow less depressing than the Lovely Bones.
