Reggia | 2643 comments A little survey, discussion and maybe even some interpretation of dreams.

Do you remember your dreams? like your dreams? Ever notice any recurring dream themes or elements in them? Have you been able to figure out what they mean/pertain to in your waking life?

Margaret Metz I dream in color. I often dream about my writing or something I've read or watched recently. I think when I've been dwelling on a problem and trying to puzzle it out and can't - sometimes my subconscious mind knows the solution when I can relax and not think about all the "stuff" that I have to worry about during the day. So I may figure out how to fix a scene or a better section of dialogue -- or I may realize what it was that bugged me about the show I watched right before bed.

I have had recurring dreams before. Usually they come during periods of stress and they're nightmares. I don't normally have a hard time figuring them out. I'm generally fighting against overwhelming odds of some kind. That's generally how I feel during those situations. Then the details sometimes give hints about the situation - or how I'm interpreting it.

Also my dreams often are impacted by real life. I may dream someone stabbed me in the stomach and I wake up sick to my stomach and pain. Another time I may have someone pulling me by the arm and when I woke up my arm was pinched in the space between the headboard and my nightstand.

Nicole | 1752 comments I do remember quite a few of my dreams, which are in colour. They come in all varieties--pleasant, scary, weird, etc. I do have some recurring themes, especially when I've been stressed. The stress dreams often involve being lost somewhere and/or settings and events related to academic situations (although I finished college years ago). Occasionally, I have "lucid" dreams, where I am aware I'm dreaming and "reorder" the dream or refuse to do something demanded of me in the dream because it's a dream. I have had a few dreams like you mentioned, where pain perceived in the dream turns out to be actual, physical pain, like the time I'd strained a muscle in my side by coughing and I dreamed I was being stabbed with a sword.

Erin E (elizamc) Interesting note, no one actually dreams in colour, we fill in the colour if we remember the dreams when we wake (gotta love psych 101)

I am not sure about reoccuring themes, but I do know I tend to dream more when I am stressed or worried. When we sleep our brain assimilates what we have learned that day as well as allows us to work through situations that are tough for us (again that is the psych class talking)

I do have one reoccuring dram when I am stressed about falling off a cliff into water and drowning... but others are (blush) personal... ;)

Nicole | 1752 comments I didn't learn *that* in Psych 101--really, we remember in colour???

Erin E (elizamc) Yeah, I still am not sure how much I truly beleive that tidbit, but it has stuck with me, strangly enough.

Reggia | 2643 comments I have heard we don't dream in color but when I look back on my dreams, I don't feel so certain. One I had as a child in which there was a pair of red shoes. And another I had about 10 years that took place in Baltimore, the streets were covered with posters of brightly-colored fish. Odd to think that I may have filled that in...

one recurring dream when i was young was being chased around a hardware store by a gorilla and remember he was black and I hid in a plastic tree which was brown with green leaves.

Nicole | 1752 comments Were you afraid of gorillas when you were awake?
I remember when I was little hearing a news report on the radio about "guerilla fighting", which I understood as "gorilla fighting" (being small and unfamiliar with Spanish or warfare). My dad was flummoxed when I asked him why the gorillas were fighting. ;)

No. I also had a dream when younger than 5 about bloody elephant coming down the street to our house. Hmmmmm guess I need to talkto my psychologist!

Erin E (elizamc) Callista, you just reminded me about a book someone wrote for children and they took phrases like: "Car pool" and "Guerilla Fighting" and drew pictures based on what Children would assume they meant... It's a great book and I wish I had it in my resources for work.

Reggia | 2643 comments Erin, that children's book looks delightful! And it reminds me of another title If Everybody Did. Hmm, this might be good fodder for another game thread... book associations.

Syra, elephants were figured in some dreams I had just a couple of years ago. They were marching abreast down a crowded street, most were going to church and scattered out of the way. I just kept backing up for blocks until I myself was backed up to the church, a Catholic church. Never figured that one out or maybe I have... My back is up against a/the wall(?).

Recently, I was having recurring dreams of tigers and lions. Although they never seemed to be attacking me, I felt threatened by their presence and they were always keeping me from the direction in which I was heading. Always I thought that direction was going to be my home, e.g. a peaceful cottage in a serene wooded setting but in this last one a tiger lay across my path. I had to retreat and go back to a temporary home at the edge of the woods. It was filled with windows and, well, that's enough... I was able to apply this warning to my life and the dreams promptly stopped. ;)

Nicole | 1752 comments Chocolate Moose! Awesome. I'll have to have a look at that. :)
Lions and tigers and...no bears. Oh my. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
Last night I was awoken by a dream in which the large spider I was trying to squash jumped on me. Ron Weasley and I have something in common. ;/ --Actually, that dream probably came from finding an actual scorpion in my bedroom a couple of weeks ago.

I often dream about not being able to find my car in nighttime parking lots, although I am not one of those people who easily loses track of where I parked the car.

Erin E (elizamc) I must have really enjoyed A Discovery of Witches because for whatever reason (maybe it was the nature of the movies for girls night in) I dreamed that I was the daughter of Matthew and Diana's... and I kept getting angry and turning into a ball of fire and burning up.

Reggia | 2643 comments LOL, Callistam but nope, no bears. Thinking of that movie though reminds me of a dream I used to have as a teenager: red shoes sticking out slightly from underneath a dresser. It wasn't until I was an adult that I connected it with The Wizard of Oz. The shoes in the dream though were my own from childhood (lol, no glitter, no heels, just buckles and very well-worn).

I haven't been remembering my dreams lately -- no fun!

Interesting, Erin! Anyone else have elements from a book they're reading manifest in a dream?

message 16: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1752 comments Cool dream, Erin. Sometimes I dream I am part of fave books, movies, or TV shows, too.
I don't remember *all* my dreams, either. But some are very vivid.
