Miss in a Man's World (Mills & Boon Historical) by Anne Ashley
sometimes i find gems among these paperback authors but this got to be the worst of them all. I was bored, its a new book, the synopsis seem appealing... until i started reading it. The book is not really bad but at the essence, its almost like the malay romance novels that my sisters and friends seems to like reading. Bah.. the writing style is dredging and too forced for the genre.

Kinda make me sad.. this is the 100th book anyway.

really cute story.. it could have been renamed to a better title though.

Yes, I read it today while the book was expecting to be published NEXT month. Dont ask.

But I still have several books in Harlequin October pack... so tiring liao... gonna switch to a more serious one.

The False Princess by Eilis O'Neal
I think this was the best book that I've read that is perfectly good (and a debut novel) that subpar Lene Kaarberbol, Diane Wayne Jones or even Ursula K. Le Guin. I hope she make more story such as this. Its very well written for a YA novel.

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward
Recommend by someone in Goodreads. If you are a beginner with vampire romance fiction, this could be a good book. But if you are "Kenyon fan" like me, you could give it a pass.

Its not a bad book, but its dragging. You will need to read the rest of the books though.

note:
In singapore for a couple of days. And no mood to read. hence lack of updates.

Good reading for boys. A bit dragging in the beginning but the storytelling session is really interesting. It picks up right near at end. Good book to start a series.

Syahira | 752 comments 107. Kendare Blake - Anna Dressed in Blood
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Awesome book. The cover, the title, the book itself is pretty much drizzled in oily bloody murder.

Personally, from the gore, male first POV, death, etc its not being written for girls. A bit too emotional and have a bit of love story (not too clingy either)for boys. Its pretty much unisex book, I'd say.

Waterfall (River of Time, #1) by Lisa Tawn Bergren
Another absolutely wonderful book. Bloodthirsty, medieval and forbidden love between 21st century girl and 14th century young lord. The action and mystery trumps over the romance so it was never dull moment. Did I say bloodthirsty? expect a lot of swordfighting and bow-slinging vendetta by two teenagers. Wonderful and well researched. Like The Borgias, I was more ancient and english middle age-history buff. Reading about Siena in this book is definitely making me wanna to go to Siena. Albeit the moderate and slightly modernized version of the city.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
If you like The Prestige and MirrorMask, you'll love this.
Its not young adult in some sense, but not too much adult. Its not romance much and the characters do grow old. Its filled with descriptions and details so that its not hard to imagine the scenes. Good observation skills from the author.

Oh thanks for the comparison. I love both those books so will definitely be checking out this one.

How does it compare to Harry Potter though? Because I read in WSJ that it's supposed to be the next HP and was recently launched with great fanfare.

actually, I read this book because GR recommendation, I dont really read through the blurb (since at the first two chapter, I think the blurb is wrong)..

no.. not really harry potter. Harry Potter is linear read, this book is like a maze. Its not a children nor young adult book (and it did hint of child abuse too..) so I won't recommend to pre-teens unless they like really deep stories. Although the blurb says something about romance and stuff but personally, its quite a philosophical novel, the book is about the circus, not romance (hence a lot of negative reviews on this book because they expect something else). The plot kinda reflects the world of escapism and hidden magic in a magic trick. Hence, like the Hugh Jackman character in The Prestige.

I really do love the book, the writing is beautiful (especially the description of the circus clock, the ice garden, the labyrinth, the iced lovers). I wouldn't recommend reading solely on the Harry Potter-relation since its not really about wands and teenage stuff.

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
I probably spend half a year trying to read this (48 chapters of descriptive novel with dull commentary). The only time I could take an interest of it was when I was watching the film adaptation of it. Its definitely once in a lifetime read. I absolutely hated Mary Crawford. I want to clobber Henry Crawford on his head. I mean, if he's put more effort in continuing his attempts on getting Fanny, she would have been his. Now he's miserable. Sad guy.

The Pirate Prince (Ascension Trilogy, #1) by Gaelen Foley
I have been eyeing Gaelan Foley's books for years but never had bothered to read her books. This is her first book apparently, surprisingly very weirdly realist in a certain way. The hero are very very flawed in this book (for someone that have his name on its title). Should be renamed with less deceiving title. Twilight fans beware.

A lot of religion subtext in this book. A serious novel that satirise politics, religions and the multi-racial society. Interesting but moderate read. Ending is not that bad if you dont mind a lot of christian fanaticism in the end.

btw,that's not the point.

actually i am wondering, those books u've read, what are the genre eh?fantasy, no? it's just, those books u've added look very interesting, but i just cant do fantasyyy or other world..hmmmmmm

message 138: by Syahira (last edited Oct 21, 2011 04:27PM) (new)

Syahira | 752 comments sometimes I add books that I intend to read and later read other books instead especially if the current book is halfway uninteresting. haha.

I love Fantasy genre in movies but I rarely read fantasy since a lot of the books from usual fantasy section are mostly written by man and geared for male population (means more descriptive details on inane stuff like weaponry, politics, monsters and unbalance gender characterization like if its a weak female, its usually a sex object/hero groupies or manipulative political psychopath or other stereotypes etc..). some YA fantasy are easier reads but usually if I found a lot of male character stereotypes (excessive heroism idolatry, hubris, main female character groupies, etc), I would heavily criticise it too by labeling them as "Twilight-like" to sum it all.

The fantasy books in this challenge is usually came from my boredom in my usual genre of Paranormal Romance/YA. Its okay to change it back and forth so that it wont bore you.

Find your comfort zone, if you cant handle the fantasy books just take a break from it. If you think its not worth your time to continue reading, just leave it off until you're ready.

Sidhe is fairy in gaelic. A lot of people assume fairy as tinkerbell and such so I refer serious Irish lore fairies story as Sidhe. The entire series is comparable to Karen Marie Moning's Faefever and Richelle Mead's Thorn Queen series but more YA.
