This is a short novel about an Irish widow and her family. The book is laced with dark humor-- her husband dies and she attends the wrong funeral, her friend Marilyn says "hello" to God every morning in church but later dies of cancer, the woman's young daughter falls victim at school to something her teacher calls "the wrath of God."

I found it! This book is "The Mammy" by Brendan O'Carroll and is the first in the Agnes Browne trilogy.
