J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 8 comments Has anyone seen the "Before you go" page on the new software update (3.1 or something?) One of the things it has done is to add a page on the end of the book called Before You Go so you can give it a quick rating on the spot and Tweet or FB a short review to your usual account. Cunning, huh?

Well yes....only I don't know about you guys, but I haven't got round to linking my Twitter / FB accounts with my Kindle yet. Am I just being lazy? Have you lot done that bit already? And does anyone use that page or is it just one of those things you kind of don't get round to?

Any thoughts, anyone?

I haven't linked my Kindle to my Twitter account. I don't have a FB account. The only thing I do on my Kindle is read. Even when I want to buy books, I usually go directly to Amazon's website on the computer, buy the book, then turn on the 3G of the Kindle to download it. I'm sure there are other features of the Kindle that I'm not using either!

message 3: by Mary (new)

Mary (marybt) I don't intend to. Mostly because it creeps me out for everyone on earth to have instant access to all those details about me.

Same for me. Sometimes I get in the mood to read some good smut and I don't want people knowing that unless I personally feel like sharing it with them.

Cate P (theblondediaries) | 5 comments I finally linked mine up a week or two ago just so I could share with my friends what I read and how I liked it. I usually keep the wireless off but when I finish a book I'll flip it on real quick to send my tweet/update and then to see if there is anything that I picked up for free on Amazon that needs to be downloaded.

I'm not a fan of Facebook trying to link everything I do back to them. Every site I go to now has "Connect with Facebook!!!!" everywhere and I'm sick of it. I don't want Facebook having access to every single thing I do.

message 7: by Betsy (new)

Betsy I agree with Mary, Tina, and Ralph. I have no intention of linking Kindle to FB or Twitter. I don't link GR to FB either. If I have friends with whom I'd like to share information about my reading, I invite them to join GR.

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 8 comments @Tina - too right! Hadn't thought of that, hurhurhur...

@ all: Yes, I know what you mean - I do find FB a bit stalky on occasion. I set myself up on there because I need an author's page; and there are people I'm only in contact with through there, so I don't really want to drop out of it, but I'm not a huge fan.

I'm thinking I might add the Twitter because being self-pubbed myself, I read a lot of indies and like to support them however I can - but not sure about the FB link. As Ralph said, FB seems to be going for world domination! I use my author page out of necessity but my Kindle is - well, personal as well as professional.

I am quite partial to Twitter though...terrible procrastination tool!

I like Twitter too. I was on Twitter before FB and just prefer using it. That's why I deleted all my info from FB and deactivated my account.

message 10: by Mary (new)

Mary (marybt) @ J.a., don't get me wrong. I happen to like facebook. I just don't put much personal information on there. Like I would never put my status as "going camping this weekend." That's a good way to get your house robbed!

And a lot of that is because of what Ralph said - I think it's creepy that anyone would want that much info on me.

message 11: by Helen (new)

Helen I have FB and twitter but rarely use either, minimal info is my motto! If someones wants to know what I thought about a book, they could simply ask me.

I don't think I'm that interesting.

And other people aren't, either.

You can link your Kindle to FB and Twitter?! Wow, shows how much I know. I obviously didn't finish that looong book of instructions. I agree I wouldn't like sharing that much info on me either. FB can be nosy and I'm not on their that often.

message 15: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Hinze (vickihinze) I have them both but so far have resisted the temptation to link them. I kind of like having Kindle for purely reading. If I have FB and Twitter on there, I'm worried I'll get distracted and my Kindle will become like the computer. Think I'll resist a while longer. :)

lifewithshaza I have linked my Twitter account but not my FB one!

Irene Well Worth A Read I had already linked mine to my facebook before the update with page numbers and "before you go" came out. yes I do use it.

Irene Well Worth A Read I really don't get why so many people are "creeped out" by rating a book you've finished on your kindle and letting it post to your wall. so and so gave such and such 5 stars is too much information? If you have people on your facebook friends that you would not want to know what book you've read maybe you should delete them off your friends list. My profile is private, only my friends can see it, and it doesn't bother me at all for them to know whether or not I've enjoyed a book.

Tina the kindle doesn't post to your facebook on it's own. Even if you do set it up to allow yourself to post on your wall. It does not automatically tell people that you are reading smut.

Connie | 2 comments I have my kindle linked to Facebook. Actually, I think it's an awesome tool. I agree with Irene, the friends on my Facebook know I love to read and I'll pretty much read anything so rating a book and showing that I have finished reading it is no biggie to me.

I really don't care if my friends know what I'm reading. I do, however, care that that Facebook and those running the site seem to want access to everything I do so that they can sell that information to advertising companies. If someone asks me what I'm reading, I'll gladly tell them. But I don't need a corporation storing that information along with every site I visit, what kind of tea I drink, and how many times a day I walk my dog.

Does Facebook sell my information?
No. You have control over how your information is shared. We do not share your personal information with people or services you don't want. We do not give advertisers access to your personal information. We do not and never will sell any of your information to anyone.

Whether they directly sell the information or not, they still collect it and use that information to target ads directly at you. It why when I was talking with my one of my friends about possibly visiting her in Israel I all of a sudden started getting ads for trips to Israel. It uses the information you list in your Likes and Interests to target ads to you - I get ads for anime, NCIS, and books all the time from them since those are listed under my interests.

They may not sell the information to the advertisers, but they're collecting it and acting as a third party to send ads to me that they profit from. It's one of the reasons I use Adblock on there now.

Irene Well Worth A Read Ralph, all free websites use advertisements to pay the bills. Yes Facebook does send targeted ads, but it's anonymous, they don't give out anyone's names or sell anyone's info. If I have to see ads I'd rather see ads that interest me. To each their own. My original point was that no info is sold about you just because you might use your kindle to rate a book, and that if you choose to register your Facebook through your kindle, the kindle does not go online without your permission and tell everyone that you are reading "smut" as someone suggested.

message 26: by Mary (new)

Mary (marybt) Ralph, I'm with you. It's just that everyone and every company thinks they need to know everything about you. When I go to a store and pay with cash (which I generally do) I won't give them my phone number, email, or zip code. I just don't feel like I want to give that information out. I'm not rude about it, I just say I don't give it out.

message 27: by Helen (new)

Helen I'm seconding Ralph and Mary on this. Targeted ads are wrong on so many levels and watching Minority Report really emphasised that to a FB-mad friend I had.

message 28: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Suggested reading: The Filter Bubble. Will give you an idea how targeted ads work and why they're a problem. Also, how much Facebook filters your feeds regardless of your settings.

I agree with what you said, but feel you could have taken even further. If you REALLY want privacy, stay away from social networking. Private social constitutes an oxymoronic combination. :-) at least that's my take on the situation.
