Kim | 43 comments It seems to me that early on there was a reference to Undine, but I'm not finding it now. Nonetheless it does seem she gets some of her imagery there, especially from Learmont's first experience. Following that line and the description of Radborne's work, I concluded that one of the author's unsaid references had to be Arthur Rackham, one of my personal favorite illustrators of fairytales. You can read a version of Undine on Project Gutenburg here: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/18752/...
Not a version I originally printed out, but I'll have to find that later. Their version is a different illustrator from Rackham, though also beautiful. His illustrations of Undine and others are here: http://rackham.artpassions.net/
You can see where the reference to bizarre and dark images comes from. Rackham was born after the PR's but the influence of their work can be easily observed. Check out Burne-Jones's "The Beguiling of Merlin". I haven't done my homework on what she says are her actual references, aside from my earlier post on Swinburne's writings. What do you think, am I right?
