Maggie (lacr1mation) I'm w/ Pritkin. Johnny Cash is the Beethoven of his time. (pls note I don't particularly like country music.) I have a question. I'm 1/2 way & where is Rafe? Did he die in Curse & I forgot/read it too fast?

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Maggie, nah, Rafe didn't die. He got a sort of blood transfusion from Mircea, which broke his bond with Tony (his original master) and made Mircea his direct master. I can't remember him getting mentioned in Hunt the Moon. I guess he's maybe still recovering from his burns?

Mello ❣ Illium ✮Harry✮ ☀Myrnin☀ Torin Ichimaru | 2012 comments I'd almost forgotten all about Rafe. I'm going to have read this series again soon.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Yeah, it's actually kinda bad that I didn't even think about him not being in Hunt the Moon (or having only a teeny part that I've forgotten about). The last I remember he was in an infirmary at Dante's. I can't recall if he ever got moved? Maybe they took him to Mircea's place in Washington to recover (since everyone was going there for the Pythia coronation anyway).

Does anyone remember where he is?

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Yeah, that was my assumption too. I'm sure Cassie would have mentioned it if anything bad had happened to Rafe, so I presume he's fine and just somewhere else, either to recover or just somewhere a little safer than in Cassie's presence. But I reckon you're right, he wasn't mentioned at all in HtM as far as I remember.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Hopefully we'll see more of Rafe in the next Cassie book. I wonder if having Mircea's blood instead of Tony's will make any difference to him. Rafe wasn't all that powerful before. Maybe he'll move up a level now?

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Quite possibly, seeing as master vamps get power from their families. Hey, Rafe's 3rd level now, so if he went up a level, he'd be at the same level as Tony! For some reason I find that very amusing.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Isn't Rafe fifth level? Or am I getting confused? I thought Rafe was quite a bit less powerful than Tony.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) i also thought Rafe was a pretty low level master - though i suppose he could of gotten a boost from being directly under mircea's line.

message 710: by Somnium (last edited May 12, 2012 10:24AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Oops, I meant he was 4th. It's Tony who's 3rd. Hmm, I thought Rafe was fourth, but I'm really not sure now you ask. He could be fifth. I'll try to go look it up, but don't even remember which book it was mentioned in.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I think it says in Curse the Dawn when he gets all burned. I'll check on it and post back.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments OK, I looked up Rafe's master vamp status. Cassie says in Curse the Dawn that he's fourth level. (I could have sworn I read somewhere he was 5th level. Oh well, wrong again LOL!) Tony is currently 3rd level, but there was some speculation he may have risen to 2nd level? Hopefully Rafe will get a push-up from Mircea's power.

message 713: by Cat (new) - rated it 4 stars

Cat (shelfmotivatedbooks) | 157 comments Enjee! I totally agree with you on a few points: Cassie is terrible at bargaining, and I think she'll make the situation worse, if and before it gets better (as always). But her heart is definitely in the right place!

As for the Mircea or Pritikin debate, I feel the same way! I definitely don't want her and whoever she ends up with to go through the pain of watching only one person get older, etc. GAHH can't wait to see what happens!

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments I reckon her being a demigoddess will somehow come in to the ageing issue. But I'm generally not too worried about it. I agree though; I want both Pritkin and Mircea to be happy. I love Mircea, but I can more kind of see her ending up with Pritkin.

Hmm, so Rafe is 4th. I really want him to go up to 3rd level now. Since all of Cassie's body guards are 3rd or above, do you reckon there's any chance that Rafe'll get assigned to be one? That would be brilliant.

Hey, maybe we were wrong about Mircea or Cassie being the one to kill Tony. Since Rafe'd be the same level (unless Tony has managed to go up), it would be hilarious if he was the one to do it. I think it'd be good for Rafe, but I can't really see it happening. Just an amusing idea.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I agree about Cassie's ageing being something of a non-issue now. I remember lots of discussion about this before Hunt the Moon came out, about how Cassie could sustain a long term relationship with a vampire, as she aged and he didn't. Let's be honest peeps, can you see Mircea still being in love with Cassie if she looked like your grandmother. He might love her (like you love your grandmother), but not be 'in love' with her. It was too one-sided and wouldn't have worked. But I think Cassie now either has extremely long-life or immortality, so the ageing thing doesn't really factor in any more.

It would be cool if Rafe killed Tony, even though he doesn't really strike me as a violent guy. I don't doubt he could defend himself if he had to, but I don't really see Rafe as having that edge that I think a bodyguard would need. He seems to have too much of a gentle heart, and I think even if he killed Tony because it was the right thing to do, he'd probably regret that there had to be bloodshed. He's an artist, man, not a killer! :D

I'm also wondering, even though Tony & Rafe might end up on the same level, if they really would be equal. Tomas and Louis Cesare are both first level, yet LC seems much more powerful than Tomas, as he can force his will on Tomas (like making him return to MAGIC). I think the levels thing is possibly a fairly broad spectrum and Rafe might be at the bottom of the 3rd level (since he would be 'newly qualified') and Tony would be near the top, ready to move up to 2nd level.

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Ahh, Mircea with granny-old Cassie. I'm not sure whether to be amused or mentally scared by that. And now I have mental images of Mircea with one of the Graeae stuck in my head O_o

Yeah, I got the same impression about the levels having a 'spectrum', if I'm honest. Silly Tony. For some reason, in my mind him being so fat and described as 'white trash' should prevent him from having too much power. Do you reckon, if (theoretically of course) he doesn't die soon, he could actually make it to first level? I can't really see it to be honest. I mean, Tony, more powerful than Marco? No. Just no.

But speaking of varying powers of master vamps, how powerful do you reckon Rasputin is? Has it ever been mentioned?

I agree, Rafe is far too nice to be a bodyguard, but then again, Fred is a bodyguard too, so you never know...

Jax | 831 comments LMAO...and EEEWWWWW... Laugh some more...
Mircea with Deino!! LOL
I wonder if his foot fetish extends to gnarly old toes?? LMAO!!

message 718: by Aileen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aileen | 867 comments Oh wow...Mircea with a granny...not something I EVER wanted to imagine...lol but even better than JUST Mircea with Granny Cassie, but Mircea AND Pritkin with Granny Cassie!! Anddddd since Pritkin is who he is, he may still be young as well!! Him and granny Cassie would have beautiful little incubus children!!

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Somnium, Lol'ing at the idea of Mircea with the Graeae!! :o

Jax, I'm traumatised at the thought of Mircea sucking gnarly old toes. That image needs to come with a government health warning!

On the subject of Tony, he might have vamp power, but when you take that away (by pairing him with someone of similar power), I have to wonder how much of an opponent he'd be. I can't see him being much of a fighter, since he weighs about 300lbs (unless he's a sumo wrestler LOL). I think Tony was smart enough to surround himself with lethal bodyguards, but if Rafe got him on his own, I think he could take him.

PS I totally forgot about Fred as a bodyguard! Jeez, they must have been really short-staffed that day LOL!

message 720: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna | 1680 comments Re: RAfe How can you guys suggest that he would be Cassie's bodyguard. That's downright cruel-he's such a softie he'd be splattered on the first encounter! Now if he had to paint his way out of trouble... what if he could do enchanted drawings like Pritkin's tattoo (sigh) or Augustines? dresses...

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) while rafe does care for cassie and would have no problem trying to protect her (and risking his life to do so) i agree with anna, he would not last long at all around cassie! lol.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Oh god, I think I'd rather have a bare-knuckle fist fight with Tony than have to work with Augustine and his, um, artistic temperament! :D

I'd happily mix paints for Rafe all day though.

message 723: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna | 1680 comments I'd love to hear what he thinks of Dante's decor! It made me laugh that we've 'lost' him. Perhaps he's just remodelling the casino along the lines of the Vatican...

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Hmm, Rafe remodelling the Casino isn't a half bad idea actually. It rather needs it, and Casanova would love it. I doubt the senators are too thrilled with the tacky wild west decor etc, although I kind of love Dante's just as it is. Well, except the wild west suite from CtD, but that's already gone.

Mircea and old lady toes?!?! Argh! I need eye bleach!!!

message 727: by Aileen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aileen | 867 comments Lol but at the same time...if it was Cassie, you know everyone would accept it because he LURVES her that much to do it...or he just loves TOES that much...

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Hmmm.... no. Still no. And personally I had Mircea licking Deino's toes stuck in my mind *shudders*. Pass the bleach, will you Sarah?

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Maybe Dante's needs an ancient Egypt theme, to make The Consul feel at home when she comes to stay. (I'm trying to distract myself from Mircea's Toe-pocalypse!)

But yeah, Rafe painting the ceilings would be fun. I could imagine an art historians convention where they all paused to admire how the casino decorator was totalling channelling Raphael!

message 730: by Zeenat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I know I'm late, but as far as master level power goes . . .

I feel like a lot of it has to do with choice, or drive. Rafe doesn't want to be powerful, Marco doesn't want to be a master. Tony on the other hand, probably wanted it more than anything.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments That's interesting Zeenat. I think a person's basic personality and drive does have a lot to do with how powerful they get, yet it's also hard to imagine someone not wanting to be their own master. Though I suppose there's more protection for you in serving a powerful master, rather than being a master yourself and being responsible for others.

Tony was definitely ambitious and craved power, and Rafe doesn't. I'm not so sure about Marco though. Isn't he a fairly high level? I don't know why he hasn't decided to go it alone. I guess serving Mircea suits him (though he was terrified when Cassie got into trouble and he knew Mircea was going to blame him).

message 733: by Jax (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jax | 831 comments As for Rafe and Tony....
I agree with Zeenat...
But as I keep picturing a mini Jaba the Hut for Tony,
I really don't want him to get any more powerful!
He's a Jackass already!
Maybe if Rafe had the right kind of motivation... then he'd definitely be more powerful than Tony...

Good intentions JAx.... but I still have that hilarious (and frankly DISTURBING) image in my head!

And now my coworker is looking at me with a puzzling expression 'cause I'm grinning and making squishy face at the computer screen! XD

message 735: by Jax (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jax | 831 comments LOL - Sorry!!
But I really can't help that's where my mind toodled off to! :D

I'm lucky - its only my kids who think their mother's gone off the deep end cos she's howling with laughter at the computer!!

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments LMAO Jax! Not a gnarly toe in sight, you're completely forgiven. :D

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Peace offering accepted...I think.
Yeah, but truth be told, I don't think Rafe will ever manage it. I just can't see Rafe as being powerful. I mean, can anybody actually imagine Rafe as a senator? Now that would be a sight. I can actually see Marco as one though, even if he doesn't want to be. Although I'm not really too convinced that he doesn't. It would get him out of having to be Cassie's bodyguard for a start! Nobody wants that job.

message 738: by Zeenat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Lannister wrote: "That's interesting Zeenat. I think a person's basic personality and drive does have a lot to do with how powerful they get, yet it's also hard to imagine someone not wanting to be their own master...."

Marco explained why remember?

“You know the score. Gotta belong to someone.”

“But you’re a senior master.” I pointed out. “You could have a court of your own, if you wanted.”
“Yeah. And have all the expense and the headaches and the diplomatic shit to deal with, and still have to answer to somebody. Everybody’s the same; can’t wait to move up, to hit fifth or fourth or third level, and strike out on their own. Only to find out the same thing.”
“And what’s that?”
His hands stilled on my back. “That there’s no freedom in our world, Cassie. If I left Mircea, I’d have to ally with some other high-level master in order to survive. And then I’d be dragged into his life, his fights, just like now. Everybody answers to somebody; everybody has restrictions they got to put up with. Even senators. Even Mircea.”

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Thanks Zeenat!! I'd completely forgotten this quote.

It's a really good quote and gives you quite an insight into how the vampire world works. When you hear about vampire Senates around the world, it sounds very modern and democratic, but really it's the opposite. The vamp world is more like the feudal societies from British & European history. It's actually a bit nightmarish, to be honest. If an older, more powerful vampire decides he wants to add you to his household, unless you're allied with someone powerful, you don't seem to have any choice in the matter. You will be added! It's almost a form of slavery.

Radu is the only vamp I can think of that has tended to stay out of things, but then he had Mircea to protect him, and Mircea probably only let him go his own way because they were brothers. I would guess if he was anyone else, he'd have been put to work in some manner to benefit Mircea and the family.

message 740: by Maggie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maggie (lacr1mation) I'm not done w/ this book yet. But, I'm officially <3 Pritkin. Very strange how these things happen. I wanted Cass to bitch-slap him til the 3rd book. I miss Billy Joe tho. Not much of him in here.

Samara Chung *jump-into-the-middle-of-convo*
Urghhh stressed out by exams , really wanna be in cassies world now :((

message 742: by Maggie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maggie (lacr1mation) What are you studying?

Samara Chung A level maths, that hurts my brain, a lot lol tmr is the exam and I'm gonna just let myself fail this one D:

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Maggie, I love that KC has turned around so many people's opinion on Pritkin, cos everyone loves Mircea at the start. (And many, many people still want Cassie with Mircea.) But I love it when authors can make you think a certain way about someone, then slowly, almost without you realising it, your opinion gets changed. And then one day you realise that you're rooting for Pritkin and you wonder how the hell that happened! :D

I miss Billy Joe too (I always go to spell his name Billie Joe, like the singer out of Green Day, who I may have a slight crush on!!) KC said that he's still in the books the same amount as before, but because the books are getting longer, it just seems like less. If there's more pages in a book, there should be more Billy Joe. Simples!!

Hey, wouldn't it be cool to get a BJ short story! Like maybe when he's all juiced up on Cassie's energy and he heads into Vegas and has fun pushing chips around at the Casino just to mess with people, then he goes and ogles strippers! I would totally read this story LOL!

Samara, aww, please don't be stressed! :( Exams will be finished in a couple of weeks, then you'll be free! So, tell me, if you could spend time with anyone in Cassieland, who would you hang out with and what would you do?

Samara Chung Thabks Lannister your the nicest person in could meet lol
I'd probably just sneek in the leader of the senates room in Dante and swim in her private swimming pool lol or maybe sneek in mircea's room *YES*
The latter sounds brilliant to me lol

Speaking of which, I just realized that I really hate pitrikin in the beginning lol He was so stubborn and annoying I could kill such person lol

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Aw, thanks! *blushes*

I'm not sure I'd go anywhere near the Consul's rooms, cos she scares me! She probably keeps her snakes in the pool when she's not wearing them LOL!

I think I would like to have hung out at MAGIC before it was destroyed. I'd like to spy on the Senate meetings to find out what they're really up to! I really like the vampire politics, cos they're such sneaky sods who are not to be trusted!

You can sneak into Mircea's rooms and I'll sneak into Marlowe's. We'll see who gets caught first LOL!

message 747: by Maggie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maggie (lacr1mation) I hate math too. The only kind I'm good @ is calculating growth hormones & only got that way through repetition. :p
Yeah, we need a Billy Joe orign story. I mean I know we know what happened but, would be cool from his perspective.
Wait! You think Lanny is nice?? Clearly, you haven't discussed Game of Thrones or Curran w/ her. Bwahahaha!

message 748: by Aileen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aileen | 867 comments Lannister, I hate to say it but sneaking into a spy's room...you'd get caught first, he probably has SOOO many booby traps even HE doesn't know where they all are!! But...it'd be fun to try!! And maybe he'd think you were brave for trying to sneak into a master spys rooms!!

message 749: by Zeenat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I liked Mircea in the first book but the geis stuff turned me off in the second book almost right away. controlling people is a complex of mine lol

message 750: by Somnium (last edited May 17, 2012 11:41PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Somnium Shadows | 437 comments Ah, I totally agree with you there Lannister, I love how KC changed all our minds about Pritkin when he hated him so much at first. I hated him in the first book, and when he had that scene with Cassie in the tattoo shop in CbS, I just did a double take and went 'what the hell is this?!?'. I think I started changing my mind in the third book, and definitely by the fourth.

But in truth, Mircea's grown on me as well. I never liked him that much in the first book, since he was just so obviously interested in her for her power and seemed to view her as a child so much. I'm with Dinique here - I think I liked Tomas more at this stage. Mircea was just too manipulative, without any real affection. But that mostly changed over the next few books, so now I love them both. I keep switching between the two.

Also, I second this desire for a Billy Joe short. I do love him. I wish he was at least just casually in the room with Cassie more often, even if he doesn't really talk or do much. I wonder where the hell he spends so much of his time.

Oh, and Lannister, be careful in Marlowe's rooms! Please don't get blown up by one of the lethal booby-traps. I prefer you alive!
