Eibhleann (Jodie) Gardiner It depends on your tastes you got to remember it’s a tragedy so it doesn't end well if you don’t like sad til the very end don’t bother the ending will just leave you dissatisfied. And you have to get past the language barrier (all those arts and thous take a while to get use too, I’ve read four different plays of his and still have to use a dictionary) and there references you may not understand after all its 2011 and not Elizabethan times there are some jokes and insults that would be hilarious and witty then but made no sense now. But saying all that don’t get me wrong it’s a great play there is a reason people still read it today I say if you think you’ll like it go for it!

Oh yeah one more thing its heaps fun acting it out as you read ... trust me, McBeth is a such a hoot to do if you feel like another one of his ;)

Amy yes

message 103: by Jane (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jane I'm not a fan of Romeo and Juliet, but I still think you should read it. It's one of those plays that gets referenced and talked about all the time. And, it's a quick read, so it won't take up too much of your time.

Although, as I said, I'm not a fan of it. If you are looking to read another Shakespeare play some time in the future, I recommend Much Ado About Nothing.

I love that play! It's hilarious and so full of puns and double entendres that once you know the language and get the hang of it it's hard to keep a straight face. At the same time it's also heart warming and sweet. It's like modern day romantic comedies but entertaining.

The 1993 version of it is surprisingly good if you want to watch the play. Once you get past the small things like Keanu Reeves and Denzel Washington playing brothers and some of the costumes it's a good movie.

Robin Emma Thompson and Kate Beckingsly are in that one as well.

No it sucks and it's stupid

message 110: by Laura (new) - rated it 3 stars

Laura You should read it.

message 111: by Erik (new) - rated it 3 stars

Erik Everyone should read it just because Shakespeare is the thing to either bitch about or discuss. Plus it's like a hundred pages. It's not like you'd be wasting a lifetime, even if you did read it slowly (which can be hard not to do; he talks funny).

message 112: by Bree (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bree Stacey wrote: "I Really want to read this book, but I don't know if I should. What are your thoughts?"

Of course you should read it!! It was my favorite in high school! They are right it is a classic!

message 113: by Elif (new) - added it

Elif It's all your choice. In my oppinion this book worths it. It's not about "this book is a classic".If the book makes no sense, it's not important the book is a classic or not. But I think this book will improve your literature level with its meaningful sentences.Hope you like it.

Esoldra Yes, if you love language, if you love literature, and if you want to see where each true love story originates - this is something you have to read. Shakespeare can take a bit of getting used to but within his writings are the basis of all future books, he was a true storyteller and you will recognise how many books that have been published since are second rate rip offs of his work.

Karen Shelley wrote: "Carly wrote: "Read it. But I would suggest you get one of those books that has the plain writing and the shakespeare writing in the same book. Otherwise, you'll get lost."

I would highly recomme..."

This is a good idea. Elizabethan literature is very difficult to read until you get used to it. You could start with the sonnets. They're a lot shorter. You already know the story and the ending, so you might want to go with something your not familiar with. Personally, I can't read anything if I know the plot, the characters and the ending. I mean, what's the point?

message 116: by Selena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Selena Lem yes you should. it was awesome

message 117: by Victor (new) - rated it 5 stars

Victor Errante EVERYBODY should have already read the unabridged version of Romeo and Juliet.

message 118: by Micah (new) - rated it 3 stars

Micah Read it I suppose, it won't kill you. Then you might understand all of the pop culture references even better than before. I'd say that since it's so darn old and everything has been said about it that you get an annotated version so you can figure out what probably means what tho. Good reading!

message 119: by Hannah (new) - rated it 2 stars

Hannah no didn't like if u don't have to read don't in plain english it's just not great. think romeo is an extremest: either i marry juliet or die. and Juliet is like 14 wat does she know bout love. they both die in the end 4 very very dumb reasons

message 120: by Richard (new) - rated it 1 star

Richard Terriable!!!!!!!!!! romeo is like fucking Fifteen and juliet is i think thirteen and they both kill them selves over love for each other which doesn't make any sense your not even twenty, they no nothing about love and life goes on after your first love, how people can enjoy it is completly beyond me

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought it was annoying

message 122: by Jenn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jenn the plot was good but i wouldn't waste yo time the overall book wasn't very good i would suggest pride and prejudice

I thought the same thing

message 124: by Smiley07 (new)

Smiley07 should i read this book so many kids talk about it at school by the way it is a classic so,i guess i will read it.

message 125: by Johnna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Johnna It really is worth it, even if its just to be able to say you have read it. There's tons of quotes and references to it made in books and movies and oddly conversations. Plus, I mean its like a how to book on the best way to completely screw up everything in a relationship.

message 126: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart If you're reading this on your own (ie: not in a discussion group/class) then I'd definitely get some notes to refer to along with this. I enjoyed the play but do prefer Hamlet.
This was originally meant to be watched though, not read, so you'd most probably get just as much out of going to watch this in your local theatre group or something.

Richard Johnna wrote: "It really is worth it, even if its just to be able to say you have read it. There's tons of quotes and references to it made in books and movies and oddly conversations. Plus, I mean its like a how..."

i hated the fucking thing but that is a good point it's probably the most quoted book/play ever written i guess it is worth the read just for that

message 128: by Erin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Erin O'Neill I am a Shakespeare Fan! Romeo and Juliet is a good place to start if you have never read any Shakespeare before. Take your time...and enjoy!!

message 129: by Leah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Leah if you can understand the shakespeare jiber jabber ... sure why not

message 130: by Yuliya (new) - added it

Yuliya Read original! It's up to you if you like it or not, but this is classic and there are some books, and this is one of them, which you MUST read to be educated and intelligent human being.

message 131: by Ruth (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ruth Belano-Ingkal Read it!! I had trouble reading it but the ending made me cry soooo ahahaha great book!! Classics are the best (;

message 132: by Hobb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hobb Whittons Stacey wrote: "I Really want to read this book, but I don't know if I should. What are your thoughts?"

You should read it. Things haven't changed that much...the language, the time, the place but the human heart is the same. Certainly one of the best love stories ever written!

message 133: by Sharon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sharon Lipman Try and see it as a play - yes there are different interpretations, but it was written as a play not a book and is designed to be seen as well as read.

message 134: by Joanne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joanne Yes, you should read it. The first time I read it, I was in high school. No big deal, I thought. I read it after my husband died. I read " When he dies, cut him into stars, and he will make the heavens so fine, all the world will be in love with night." I cried for a long time then.

message 135: by Johnna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Johnna Oh, Joanne, that just breaks my heart! Im so sorry for your loss.

Crystal yes

message 137: by Joanne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joanne Thank You Johnna and Crystal. He was only 50, but leukemia is a tough enemy at any age. Books have helped me through. Kind people also.

message 138: by Jason (last edited Sep 08, 2011 09:46AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jason Lilly Read it at least once. It has become the structure for many conflicted romances that followed. Also, this play has once of the best supporting characters in any work of literature (Mercutio) as well as one of the most hateful villains (Tybalt). I would only want to be in a production of this if I were cast as either Mercutio or Tybalt. Any directors out there?

Kadie D♥ Ofcourse, it's the novel everybody just has to read.
I mean Romeo and Juliet is THE lovestory of like all the centuries ;)

vasiliki ditto!!:]

message 141: by Elena (new) - rated it 3 stars

Elena Well, it's not it being good or not, the it's the fact that it freaking IS Romeo and Juliet, a classic. It's THE love story. You should read it (:

Natalie Manahan I actually wrote a review on this very book saying that it's one everyone should read.*lol* It's a classic and if you can get over the silliness of falling in love so fast with another person then you should be fine. Besides, it's the classic of all classic loves stories!

message 143: by Smiley07 (new)

Smiley07 if you are the romance type shoot for it!

message 144: by Ashley (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ashley Read it. So many people on here say that it is overdramatic, but (1) it's a play (plays aren't meant to be dull), and (2) would anyone want to read it if it was written in a monotone? (Probably not.) Romeo and Juliet is a classic, and it is good, although Shakespeare has written some plays that are better.

message 145: by Alfie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alfie what makes all the books interesting is that they have something to say about life..Now, if you believe this, you've got to read the ROMEO and JULIET just as you read other books of different genre....it says something that might be true to you, or if not, it will tell you something that is happening to some people's lives...

Rebecca a must read, because its Romeo and Juliet and you probably just should. But it is one of my least favorite shakespear books. I wont say why because judging by the question you have not read it yet and i wont do a spoiler.

message 147: by Siena (new) - rated it 3 stars

Siena Placino ya, u should actualli, it makes other books a lot easier to read. lolz

message 148: by Vera (new) - rated it 1 star

Vera As some people said you should, it's a classic and it's important to know it, but personally I didn't like this book. From Shakespeare I prefer "Midsummer Night's Dream".

message 149: by Jesse (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jesse It's definitely worth it. Even if it isn't your favorite book/play, you will be surprised by how much it is references in the world of entertainment. That goes for all of Shakespeare. Reading his work helps you understand so many other books, etc, because it's so prominent in both the literary and performance worlds. I will say, though, that it's much more fun to play in it or watch a production of it. I've played Juliet. She's one of the largest female Shakespearean roles and she's cool because she changes so much throughout the play.

Brenda Bastidas Totally, it's a classic and it's beautifully written (:
