June group read - Red Riding Hood

I looked this book up on Amazon and all the reviews said that the ending of the book is not included, that you have to watch the movie to know the ending. Anybody else heard about this? The ebook is $8.99 and I'm not paying that much to read a book that doesn't include the ending.

Yes I've heard and seen that as well. I don't think I knowingly buy a book that's not "complete". While having a book be connected to a movie in a unique way sounds cool,but if it's an important part of the book like the ending it becomes annoying in a severe way.

I read this book awhile ago and it is true that it does end rather abruptly. I never did see the movie, so I still don't know what the ending is! :)

I read the book and the last chapter prior to seeing the movie. Just google it. If you get stuck, I'll re-find the link I used.

I have to admit it vexes me a little that the author expects me to buy the book and then expects me to go see a movie to find out the ending.

It says that the book is based on the screenplay so it's not surprising that they expect you to see the film as the film is what came before the book. Guess I'll be renting the dvd from the library when it comes out as well!

I read the book several months before the movie came out... I really enjoyed both the book & the movie. I think what the author was going for was to keep the end a secret so as not to give the rest of the story away before the movie was released. When you read the book, one of the last end pages has a short blurb about whether the main character & one other person in the story has a "future"... When you go to that link, it follows along with the end of the movie. I wouldn't normally go for that kind of thing in a book, but thought it was unique, unlike any of the other paranormal stories... they all spill the surprise and have nothing left as far as the suspenseful ending...

What a cheat by not having the ending! Yeesh. And if a film is taken from a book, the book is usually *always* better. Even True Grit by Charles Portis - although the Jeff Bridges film was VERY close to action/dialogue.

Imagine, you are on the beach in some fr off place, you finish reading a paper copy of the book with no available internet access...

It does 'finish', you just don't know who the wolf is until you watch or read. I was disappointed when I read it, it didn't seem as well written.

Does that mean it's better to watch the film instead of reading the book? I'm glad I checked this thread because I thought about checking the book out, but I don't like gimmicks. A book that purposely has no ending to make readers watch the film or go check out the author's site is both a waste of time and money to me.

Jackie, I feel the same way. Maybe I'm overreacting, but if I pay for a book, I want ALL of it, I don't want to have to then pay to watch a movie to learn the ending. And like you said, going to check the author's site just seems like a gimmick to me and I don't appreciate it when authors do that to us readers.

It was done to prevent readers from spoiling the end of the film, in America the chapter was released with the film. Here in Britain we read it before we went! Film was much better in my opinion.

Patricia, I think your reaction is valid. If you're spending money on an item I would hope you want ALL of it. lol. That's like buying a keyboard only to open it up and find it's missing keys A, I, O, U with a note saying "Oh by the way, if you want these keys you need to purchase our flat screen monitor". That's BS, especially when you're paying full price for the book and you're not aware about the ending BEFORE making the purchase.

I understand about not spoiling the film, but still...how many films are made off of books and the ending is not spoiled?

I admit it's a unique idea, but only if they INFORM readers prior to purchase of what they're actually getting. I'll probably get this one from the library if I ever get around to it.

I didn't pay and it wasn't a cliff hanger as such - although you were guessing who the wolf was. I feel the idea is a good gimmick but annoying for the reader. I know a few people who have no internet access, or being on hol or, in my case, reading from the screen.

Glad I read this beforehand as well. I was going to purchaser the book to read, but now if I have to watch a movie also. I'm not much of a movie watcher. I think I'll skip this one .

If you read the book, you do get an ending it just doesn't tell you who the wolf is - not all books have a closed ending. For that you either - download the bonus chapter on the link I posted in message 8 or you could watch the film.

You don't have to see the film and you don't have to read the bonus chapter. In fact I remember not enjoying the bonus but being glad I knew who the wolf was.

The film was better than the book but then the film was made first and book based on it.

I am reading this book now and I am really liking it, I dont even want to put it down when i have to attend to other things. I am almost done with it and I have not seen the movie yet.

I just did and I just read it, While this was not my favorite book ever I did really enjoy this one! I am glad they made the bonus chapter available to read online or else that ending would have drove me crazy! I did not see that coming and was quite surprised with the ending.....

Well, being the first fictional work I've read in months, I did enjoy Red Riding Hood for being fast-paced and easy reading! It was a bit more Young Adult than I expected, but should've guessed when it said the movie was by the director of Twlight. I expected a bit more from the ending, didn't really feel the drama building up. Even if the book ended as it does without the bonus chapter would have been enough.

I am read this...and enjoyed it very much! Very dark and mysterious....gave me the creep factor!! Haven't seen the movie....Loved the Bonus chapter too...only left a cliff hanger of sorts too!

Liked the book,not my favorite,but good enough for a quick,fast paced read. The ending did leave the reader hanging a bit,although I liked how it was still satisfactory and made you come to your own conclusion.

Buuuut,after seeing that there is a bonus chapter,I may just ave to read it :D
