ABANDONED. Book about ancestral home with silver haired matriarch

This book was written probably in the 1950s. It's written in the first person & the narrator is a young woman doing (I think) a story on this family losing their ancestral home (although I think the story might take place in the U.S.) Someone is murdered & the question is, is the murderer a ghost or human? The only other character I remember well is the woman who owns the home, or is an aunt, someone with long silver hair, who is very beautiful & has a strong personality.
