Alex Sinclair I thought I would create a thread where you can recommend a good read, but not your own. What book would you recommend to people and why?

Alex Sinclair lol, I have not heard of that one. I will check it out. My first recommendation will be... Nation, by Terry Pratchett. This is one of my all time favourite books and the first 1/3 of the story has a cast of 1 character and the writing is amazing. My goal is to write a story as good as Nation.

Alex Sinclair I picked this book up by chance, as I caught sight of the covers on the kindle free list. I wasn't expecting much from this book at all, but really glad I grabbed myself a copy. The book is short, which isn't a negative. I think the size fits the story perfectly. The author paints a really interesting picture of a really dark and horrible world. The story is set around a mother and son's rather uncomfortable relationship. Not many books make me actually go "Get out of the room!" but this book did. It was honestly a nice surprise to be sucked into a story that was so well written. Shockingly good and I highly recommend the book.

Elizabeth (trishwilsonelizabethblack) | 30 comments I highly recommend "The Elementals" by Michael McDowell for horror fans. Haunted house novel. I finished it early this morning at 4 am. It's a bit slow to set up but once it takes off it's a roller coaster ride. Unnerving book.

I also recommend for horror fans who like haunted house novels "Hell House" by Richard Matheson and "The Haunting Of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. Two classics. Both were also made into fine movies.

Elizabeth (trishwilsonelizabethblack) | 30 comments You probably know Richard Matheson from The Twilight Zone. He wrote the episode with William Shatner seeing a gremlin on the wing of a plane. He also wrote "I Am Legend". Lots of movies based on that book.

Alex Sinclair lol, that is a classic Twilight Zone episode.

Suzanne Rock (suzanne_rock) | 4 comments I'm reading Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series. Yeah, I know, it's an old series, but it's still good. I just started the fourth book, Lunatic Cafe ;)

Alex Sinclair lol, nothing wrong with an old series. I am trying to get into a few of the classic books that people on goodreads have mentioned, but some are VERY hard going.

I'm reading "Bullet" from the same series!

Kelsen Jacobs | 7 comments For a good paranormal romance by fellow indie authors I would have to recommend Bound by Blood by Danielle Bourdon and Kimberly Hoyt. It has an ingenious twist with a moment of time travel thrown in as well.

And a book I pick up on a whim that has me craving the series now is Mike Carey's The Devil You Know. I read the sequel Vicious Circle and it was great storytelling. I have since discovered he is up to book 5 in the series.

Steven Moore Try The First Excellence by Donna Carrick...it's an entertaining suspense/mystery set in China. Between this book and Barry Eisler's John Rain series, I've learned loads about the Far East (respectively China and Japan). BTW, Donna's book just won the Indie best book award here in the U.S. She's a good friend and also the publisher of my new YA sci-fi thriller The Secret Lab.
