Ugly-ing up pretty actors/actresses...does it work? When? When doesn't it work?

When they shaved Portman's head for V for Vendetta, she was still stunning, so I don't know why they thought glasses and a dowdy wardrobe could possibly work...Charlize Theron and Hilary Swank are probably the two most successful "uglifications" I can think of right now. I'm sure there are others, but Monster and Boy's Don't Cry were strong attempts to believably de-glamorize two really attractive women.
I hate when the whole plot of a movie hinges around everyone calling some woman ugly because of her (glasses, frizzy hair, braces, wardrobe) and then getting her new (contacts, mousse, teeth, clothes) and everyone acting like they don't even recognize her.
Farrah Fawcett in the second half of The Burning Bed nailed the transformation and turned in a pretty emotion-evoking performance.

Look! She took off her glasses! And she put on a dress that shows her boobs! Now she's all hot!
I liked her better before.
the recent movie with mariah carey playing like the social worker or whatever was different. i think that showed how she really looks without make-up and revealing clothes (which i am ok with)
Lobstergirl wrote: "I was very convinced by Charlize Theron in that serial killer movie. Hideous."Oh yes... terribly. I was thinking that one too. Monster, I think. She looked horrid.

Go figure.
From that article, in particular Little Children with Kate Winslet - no matter how many times they repeat in the narration that she's plain looking and her body supposedly has big flaws, etc etec it's just not true! Part of the "thing" is that the guy is supposed to be sort of mystified by the fact that he's attracted to this plain woman while he's got Jennifer Conolly at home. Jennifer Conolly is certainly beautiful, but she certainly doesn't make KW plain.

Barb wrote: "Apparently, only beautiful people can act. Sheesh."Only if they are female. There are some ugly male actors out there. Steve Buscemi is an example. I love his work and it doesn't matter what he looks like.
Rebecca wrote: "That's one reason I like British movies. They hire actors, not movie stars."And we hire the British ones too, when we need someone who can act instead of/in addition to looking pretty. Half the stars of TV dramas playing Americans are Brits:
Hugh Laurie
Idris Elba
Dominic West
David Lyons and Anna Torv and Yvonne Strahovski are all Australian.
When you think of Mike Leigh movies, a masterpiece every one (IMHO) has there ever been a single pretty person in them? Well, a few, but surely no more than 20%.
Didn't mean to slight the American actors, just saying there are a lot of Commonwealth actors sneaking over here with their perfect accents. The only one I can think of whose accent I couldn't stand was the British guy from the BBC Queer as Folk who (non spoiler version) was on the Wire. He had the wussiest little voice, and no trace of Baltimore in whatever accent he was trying to do.
It's easy to forget. I think I read (or one of you told me) that Christian Bale always does interviews in an accent from the country or region his character is from, so as not to confuse people when the movie is coming out. By awards time he goes back to his own Welsh accent and totally confuses everyone.

Now I have to see it. I think Kate Winslet is gorgeous. (Although she didn't look her best in Titanic, I felt.)

Baker has a perfect American accent. Good work on that.

So does the girl from Chuck. You know who doesn't?
Seth Rogen.
His Canadian pronunciations that sneak in crack me up.
Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman are also Aussie's with really decent American accents. I didn't even know Kidman was Australian until maybe 2 years ago (but that probably says more about how little I care about her than how convincing her accent is).
personally, i don't find nicole kidman all that attractive. all i can focus on is that large 'five'-head. and renee zellweger is walking a fine line between unattractive and down-right fugly. but, she seems to have a great personality and as far as i'm concerned, that is much more attractive than some stunningly gorgeous hateful bitch.

What do you think? What actors/actresses pulled off this sort of performance? Who didn't?
