K | 286 comments I have 368 books in my to-read pile and have read around about 35-40 books since I discovered the book challenge in... I think it was September. I have, on average, been reading one every week, sometimes one a fortnight. So, if read at this same rate I an going at now, it will probably take me about 13 years, roughly... I think... I'm pretty shit at maths. Gulp.

The math is boggling my mind. I could safely say over ten years! More mind boggling not buying anymore...can't imagine.

Michelle Kobus (michellekobus) If I divide the average number of books read over the past 3 years (since I joined GR) by the number of unread books I own, it would take 2.6 years. That doesn't consider the fact I'm fond of rereads; or that some of the books I own are out of sequence, so I'd have to read a few other books before I could count every single book I currently own as read. (This doesn't count the 100+ ebooks I own, since I collect them [free ones especially] more than I read them; as a matter of fact, I have a ton of classics as ebooks, but I usually buy a hard copy anyway.)

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I have approximately 750 unread books in my library. I average 250 books a year which would lead you to conclude that I would finish them in three years. You would be wrong as I will very likely have 750 new books in three years. It is a race I long to run but hopefully will never win. This quirk helps make me me and most likely you you. It is perceived as a handicap for the unknowing and a blessing for fellow maniacs. We are unique and the literary world is growing at the same pace as my need to read. Among my books I find a bit of heaven.

I could not possibly have expressed an answer to this question more eloquently than you did, my friend!

Donna | 2 comments I am with you both! And, though some in this group adore their e-readers, I have still not made that plunge. Most of my TBR shelves are in the room with my exercise equipment- the books are a visual incentive: when I finish my exercise (unless I'm biking, in which case I am reading on the bike), I get to pick one of those lovlies off the shelf and READ!!!!

Paulie (shiratorii) | 2 comments I have 200 unread books on my shelves (this reminds me, I didn't add all of them to my account yet), and I try to read 40-50 books each year. So it would take me 4-5 years to read them all. But I always buy new books....so I'll probably never finish my pile of unread stuff. ^^ Well, there are just too many interesting books I still want to read!

Karen M | 418 comments I just bought a dozen more books so I think I have 211 books on the shelf to read and over 2000 on my Kindle. I don't even want to think about how many years it would take me. Actually I've been thinking about who will end up with my books some day. Interesting thought.

Paulfozz That's a fair number on your Kindle Karen!

My to-read pile of paper books is now nudging three hundred after a splurge over the last week or so, but because I have avoided (so far) setting myself a challenge I don't feel guilt about working through my short books to drop it (which I felt was cheating somehow when I read some last year). I have a number of short nature books*, pretty much booklets, on single species that I'm reading along with some other short books, to try to avoid going over that next major mark.

*such as The Sparrowhawk - only 24 pages, but packed with information so these are not a light read.

Virginia Rand I've been thinking about this a lot lately because I'm trying to get through my TBR pile so I can donate them and get the space back. I've got maybe 250 books at the moment so if I didn't buy any more (ha!) I'd be book free by the end of 2015. That would give me an excuse to buy more books but hopefully I'd be able to maintain a smaller backlog.

Kathryn (sscarllet) | 72 comments I think I have 3 months worth of unread books. I'm really trying to hold out on buying anymore until the pile gets lower.

message 63: by Donna (new)

Donna | 2 comments Where's the fun in that? Seriously, though, that is the best thing about your very own TBR shelf: it's yours to do with what you will. My pile spreads over a bookcase and drapes itself over two wooden ladders, and that's just how I like it.
