Arienna | 209 comments Ummm, the pic didn't work. It just had a square with a little blue box with a ? in it, and "description" in the corner. Try again?

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments Is this fruit basket? Kly u told me to read that like a year ago... i still haven't but i want to!

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
Yes, it's Furuba (that's another name for Fruits Basket), and you should totally read it.

message 454: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments Whats it about? If you can say without giving anything away...(OH. That rhymed. Score!)

message 455: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Fruits Basket is the one we were talking about either. I don't want to say much, but I guess I'll tell you that it's about a sixteen year old, orphan girl who moves into the house of three Sohma's and that they have a big, big secret.

message 456: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
And the concept is weird, but the story and characters are fantastic.

message 457: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments Whats a Sohma?

message 458: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
It's a family. Like, it's Yuki Sohma. (Well, Sohma Yuki, but...)

message 459: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid <3 Yuki
That will take some getting used to for you, Yenna. You see, in Japan you go by your last name until someone is reasonable close to you and THEN you go by your first name, but with suffix. Like, at first I would be Sxxxxx- san, but as you got closer I'd be Way-chan.
So when you introduce yourself it's Sxxxx Way
Not Way Sxxxxx

message 460: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments THAT is CONFUSING. So what do you call someone older than you that you know really well?

message 461: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Hmm... It would depend on the relationship and how well you knew them. If you were dating or family or really, really close, you'd just call them by their name. Otherwise it might be San.

message 462: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (last edited Dec 01, 2011 02:13PM) (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
But, Way, we all know your family name is Sohma....

And when you're really close, you just use the given name, no suffix necessary.

(Hate Yuki.)

Re Yenna-chan's question: Or senpai, possibly. Or maybe onee-san or onii-san?

message 463: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Lies. I'm not married to Yuki/Hiro/Shigure/ or Haru yet. Still got my maiden name and no one knows that other than you. I'll keep it to myself

(Stupid Cat)

message 464: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
You're really not picky, are you?

I wouldn't marry any of the Furuba guys, I don't think, as much as I love some of them.

(Stupid rat.)

message 465: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments What if the older person was married, but not your parent? (and there is obviously not a dating relationship going on)

message 466: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
Maybe oji-san for a man and oba-san for a woman? Depending on the age. ("Uncle" and "Aunt", technically.)

message 467: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments Cool! Um, whats with the stupid cat/rat?

message 468: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
It's a Furuba thing. Depending on how much you're okay with spoilers that are barely even spoilers...that's really all I can say.

Suffice it to say that I'm on Kyo's side and Way's on Yuki's.

message 469: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments Ooookaaaay, then.

Once again, isn't there a HGs topic supposedly going on here? I'll start one:

Who died the most interesting (not necessarily bloody or gory) death?

message 470: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Hmm, not really. Nope, not picky at all.
Though, I'll always love Yuki the best. Except I also love Yuki and Machi together so... Actually, I love all the couplings, so I think I'll leave things as they are.

Wait. People's last names come first in most asian cultures because that's just the way it happened. Culture made it happen like that. Besides, it's easier to identify people that way. Anyways, people generally get identified by their families anyways.

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments i'm gonna buy from bn soon.. really want to read....

message 473: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Bad news, Honey. TOKYO POP NO LONGER SELLS TO NORTH AMERICAN STORES. Yes, so that means if you want it, you have to order it from Amazon or find it at a second hand bookstore or library.

message 474: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments Buy what? Fruit Basket or whatever its called?

message 475: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
Tokyopop went defunct at the end of May.

And yes, to buy Furuba. Since Tokyopop published the American editions.

You can read it online, though.

Keep in mind that buying it could get pricey...

Buying it new...probably cost me about two hundred dollars, all said and done. Completely worth it, but...Used, it won't be that bad, probably, but still....

message 476: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid And all the use you get out of those volumes? You've surely payed for it many times over. Though I couldn't support my reading habits like you do. Poor people like me have to depend on the internet or the library. And, occasionally, the second hand store. I found the first volume of TRC there the other day! So happy!

message 477: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
At first, I was like "TRC"? Which is bad, considering I'm listening to the menu music now...

And yeah. I read Furuba a lot. I plan to reread it over break.

This year, my Christmas present to myself will probably be the rest of FMA, but I'm not sure.

message 478: by Honey Hawthorne (new)

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments UGHH BUT NO FEAR!!! I WILL FIND THAT BOOK!!!! going on amazon now...

message 479: by Honey Hawthorne (new)

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments i found all 21 volumes like 10 - 15 bucks each i think..... is there only 21 or more?

message 480: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
There are actually twenty-three volumes.

message 481: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Enjoy volumes 15, 16, and 17, Honey. I remember loving those. I remember rereading them fifty times and getting the same rush of feeling each time. Even thinking about fills me with joy.

message 482: by Honey Hawthorne (new)

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments Thx I added all 23 to my cart on Amazon.... It is like 200 dollars... Now I just need to convince my mom to buy them......

message 483: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Good luck!

message 484: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
Sixteen is the one about her parents, right?

I don't even know what my favorite volume is. Any with Kagura.

And yeah, manga's expensive. Each volume is like eight to eleven dollars, and there can be a lot of volumes. But I don't like reading online, so...

message 485: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
Oy! Honey, get the megavolumes. the ones with 3 books in them. IDK if their cheaper, but they are definitely more convenient. Half-price books is a good place

message 486: by Honey Hawthorne (new)

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments U TELL ME NOW???? I ALREADY BOUGHT THE SINGLE ONES!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

jk it's okay.... I like the single volumes.... they are in the mail now.....

message 487: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
OMG, how'd you convince your mom to get them for you?

message 488: by Honey Hawthorne (new)

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments begged...... it's my xmas gift!

message 489: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Wow. I'm impressed, Honey. My mom would never have bought me all of Furuba. Even for a gift.

message 490: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
Ditto. In fact, she would have insulted my reading level. *sigh*

message 491: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Yup. Mine would have been all like, "comics, Way? Really? What are you, an overgrown child with a reading level of grade four?"

message 492: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
Your mom sounds way funnier than mine.

message 493: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 710 comments Hahaha, see I love having grown up with the family I have- even though they annoy the crap out of me sometimes. They're so open minded about stuff and the only time I was questioned on a book I wanted was Wicked : The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire because I was in 7th grade and my mom knew that it had some adult themes in it- that's the only time I can remember and I was allowed to get the book anyways because I was using my own money (well, gift card from Christmas).

message 494: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
Reading comics requires a different kind of reading skill, and I actually have a better emotional connection to manga because I don't otherwise form pictures in my mind. (I think very much in words, not images.)

Granted, my parents were very disappointed the time that I bought Death Note in their presence. Which is a shame because Death Note is amazing. They also really can't pass judgement on what I read anymore.

But I will defend manga to the pain.

But there's a reason that I ask for money; this way, I can just buy the manga or anime and no one needs to know.

message 495: by Emily (new)

Emily (lafillebrigitte) to the pain? that's pretty far if you're using the Princess Bride definition.

tell me The Hunger Games doesn't come out on March 23! that's my sister's birthday! i won't be able to go!

You are that into Manga? That's a bit disturbing, but then I don't like manga.

do it for her b-day

message 497: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
I'm not *that* into manga; I adore it, but I don't read it all that much, actually.

It's more that...I'll defend just about anything book-related to the pain. I don't like when people judge another's taste in books because they just don't like a certain genre. Um...yeah, there are horrible mangas and everything, but seriously? Death Note is one of the most amazingly plotted things I've ever read.

message 498: by Hannah, Don't TOUCH my Title Klymy. (new)

Hannah | 3223 comments Mod
but you'd defend it to the pain? mixed signals.

mmmmkay....

message 499: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid In other words, you're one of those people who judges books and people who are into them. You call people who are ready to debate the goodness of a different style of book 'disturbing.' Sorry, Hannah, but that seems really narrow-minded.

Wouldn't you defend why you like something to someone who can't stand it? I certainly would (and do...) Is that disturbing?

Sorry, but you really hit a nerve and I get annoyed with people who get all judgmental about other genres of books and things. That is one of my big pet peeves.

message 500: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (last edited Dec 06, 2011 09:21PM) (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
No, not really. You don't have to love something with your whole heart to defend it with your whole heart.

Although I do love Death Note with my whole heart. And Fruits Basket. And Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

But..."I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." (It's a quote attributed to Voltaire.)

It's kind of like that.

It's about not being judged for liking something that someone else hates without really knowing why. I know that there are people who don't like manga because they don't like the medium, but I think there are a lot of people who judge it simply based on the fact that it's comics, even though they've never read any manga. And that annoys me, and yes, I will therefore defend manga to the pain.

Just like I will defend trashy paranormal teen romances to the pain. (Okay...maybe that's just to the death....)

WAY, YOU ARE TOTALLY GETTING VIRTUAL HUGS RIGHT NOW.

Also, no one is saying that you need to like manga. Do I think that you should? Um...okay, yes, I think that everyone should like at least one manga a little because there are so many different ones out there. It would kind of be like not liking any fantasy book at least a little bit or something. But if you really hate the medium, then that's fair too.
