Em (emmap) | 2687 comments Must read some more Cormac McCarthy - I loved (that's not the right word, maybe admired is better) The Road, bleak though it was!

I just love his prose style. Takes a bit of getting used to with the very long sentences but the descriptive passages in All the Pretty Horses were stunningly good at times......must write my review.

Read Poems of the Great War 1914-1918 by Richard Adlington . Found some of them very moving, particularly the work of Wilfred Owen and a bit of Siegried Sassoon. The absolute stand-out was Owen's "Dulce et Deceorum est" with it's vivid imagery of a gas attack.

Dalia | 76 comments Ian- have you read Pat Barker's Regeneration Trilogy? They feature Owen and Sassoon, one of my all time favorite series of books....

Dalia | 76 comments Pat Barker's other books are so different in voice, she is so talented. She hasn't had a new book in a while though, hope she is still writing. :-)

Her last one Life Class was in 2007 but her husband died in 2009, so possible she's had other things on her mind.

Finished The Absolutist by John Boyne. Couldn't put it down and read it in just 3 sessions. Beautifully written tale of gay love, cruelty, guilt and prejudice set in Norwich and the trenches of WW1.

Dalia - some sort of karma going on here - Pat Barker has a new novel out. Available on kindle on 16th August - presumably also in other formats. Called Toby's Room.

Dalia | 76 comments Makes sense, her husband's death probably had her thinking about loss. Can't wait to read it though. I used one of the Goodreads tool and saw a chart of all my books read by year of publication, I used to read a lot of older books but am only reading new books. After this month I want to go back and start going through the some of the older books I haven't read yet. Willa Mather comes to mind.

That's great to hear, Ian, as that's my pick for this month's genre....looking forward to it even more now!

Chemical fiction September - read My Friend Leonard by James Frey by James Frey. Good but not great sequel to the wonderful A Million Little Pieces by James Frey . About struggling to recover from addiction and friendship.
