Should send you some!!! Maybe in a small box because otherwise it will be digestive crumbs....

Laura (apenandzen) :) It's neat this group - there's food out there I didn't even KNOW about. And I'm now replacing my cream cheese addiction with organic tortilla chips and organic salsa addiction. Nice improvement for me!

:)

Digestives are a slightly greasier version of Graham crackers. Well, not exactly the same but close.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments i am always wondring if we are talking about the same food, I mean if I am thinking about the same. Like the g\digestive biscuits...they are those round, simple biscuits right? cheap, simple but really tasty...

message 2605: by Kandice (last edited Jan 25, 2009 12:22AM) (new)

Kandice They AREN'T cheap in America! Because they are foreign, they think they can charge us a lot. Silly me! I pay it!!!! I love, love, love the chocolate coated ones!

I don't know if you guys like eggs, but I can tell you how I got my brother to eat spinach. He was very, very sick and I was visiting trying to "fatten" him up a bit. You scramble eggs with feta cheese and frozen spinach and just a little minced garlic. You can cook the spinach and garlic in the pan first with a little butter, add the eggs and when they are almost done, add the Feta. That is his favorite thing now. He's a bit of a slut and lives in another state. I know he has a new "serious" girlfriend when I "meet" her on the phone and she asks me how to make Jamie's eggs.

Kandice Oh! I bought Outlander today, so I am all ready. I am going to finsh upThe Jane Austen Book Club A Novel tommorrow and be all set for when you guys want to start! It's thick, and I didn't expect that.

message 2607: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Kandice, my aunt kept nagging the whole time for me to try spinach when I was a kid. so one day I was like okay, I try a little bit...so lucky I knew where the bathroom was!!!!! But like in tortellini with ricotta I don't taste it so it is okay.

You are speedy kandice for Outlander!!! I have Jonathan Strange and mr norrel to read this month, more than eight other books too for the winter challenge....not much time to read anymore since I work....gonna try as fast as possible...how many pages?

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments kandice I have been wondering if The Jane Austen book club is any good. When I see Jane austen I think yes, when I read about it i think..oh, wondering if it is any good at all...

Kandice Jeane wrote: "kandice I have been wondering if The Jane Austen book club is any good. When I see Jane austen I think yes, when I read about it i think..oh, wondering if it is any good at all..."

Not very good. I just read The Road and it broke my heart,s o I was looking for something mindless and light. It's that.

It's 6 months of a book club (6 novels, so...) each told from the hostess of the month's POV.
I have two Sookie Stachouse books to read too, but I feel alost guilty about those, so try to wedge a bit in between.

I really don't want to start Outlander until everybody does, because the only reason I am reading it is for the discussion. Whatever did I do with myself before TNBBC?

And, my brother hates spinach, so you would probably be safe with the eggs! Do you eat eggs? My son seems like you. He'll eat nothing that ever had eyes or a mother. He also loves animals (any) more than humans. There is never an animal he can't calm or get to come to him. It must just be intrinsic.

message 2610: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Kandice, but I found out I didn't take a sookie book but one of her other serie.....

before TNBBC? when was that, who wants to remember??

Kandice I do eat eggs but not much. Actually not much at all. When I am in belgium we have our own fresh eggs. I remember the frist time my mother brought them in that was so hard for me...... when I eat them I really can't think about what I am actually eating. Just like with fish...the moment i start to think about what it actually is i am eating...well I don't manage anymore.

I really can't get close to the feelings an unknown animal can give me and an unknown human. If I have to choose between an unknown human or an unknown animal I don't have to think.
I am so ashamed of being human and do human things.

message 2611: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Oh! Jeane! I think you may be my son's soulmate! Well, he's only 15, but... We actually kept chickens and 2 ducks until about 4 months ago. My son's reasoning was that eating the eggs of the fowl we had (even though HE would not) was at least justifiable. We loved those birds, and there were no cocks, so none of the eggs were fertile. We ended having to get rid of them because of zoning laws, but he would converse and commiserate with them! I swear!
He won't even eat fish. My mom has a house on the lake, and he usually spends summers with her. He loves to fish, but in a way where he can set them free after catching. Same thing with frogs, snakes, lizards, whatever. He loves them all!

message 2612: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Kandice, I went to fish with my father and sister twice. I must have been eleven or something...we did catch one fish. You know what my sister and me did when we came home? We put it with the gold fish! Unfortunately we didn't know that ( I think it is called ale) they like to jump. So the next morning it was dead.
We have so many chicken and the old lady that lives two houses further always tells us that they are very fat just like the ducks and that they would be great cooked......Sorry, but how can you say that?????? I mean, I am not going to her and say her daughter looks very fat and would be great cooked!!!!! we also ahve a donkey that would have been killed. Got a pony to keep him company and now they are two naughty best friends. Two geese. We have many dogs but they all have their wn sad story, cats...... but we only want them so we can try to give them a happy life. So no cooking, killing or whatever......

Kandice, tell your son to keep going like that! there should be more kids like him!!:-)))

message 2613: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Aaah! Thank you Jeane. Regardless the reason, we all feel lovely when our children are admired. I think he IS a lovely boy.
We have nursed countless animals hit by cars, birds dropped from nests, even snails carried off the path on the way to the car in the morning. If we had acreage, I have no doubt we would have numerous dogs (we have 2. Both previously abused and adopted), donkeys, whatever my Shaun thought needed love!
You keep doing the same. It's people like the two of you, who shall inherit the Earth.

message 2614: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Thanks Kandice! Tha negative side of it all is that often it makes me feel incredible sad and hateful.

message 2615: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I understand the sad part. ( I live with someone like you) But, I do not believe the hateful part. I think fearful and angry, maybe, but hateful... you probably aren't capable. If you can truly feel the guilt of all humanity, you just can't hate it in the next breath. I suspect you feel love, and guilt for it, but love none the less. Shame, maybe...but not hate.

message 2616: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Kandice, better not going into that part otherwise i know what will be in my mind the rest of the day... :-)

Almost ten o'clock so almost going to clean (boyfriend listens to Mass online being held in Italy), so escaping.

I guess no exploring and see some of the chinese new year's celebration in Dublin centre. It doesn't rain anymore and the storm went a lot down but it seems so cold outside and wet....

Plans for the day: buy groceries at one of the supermarkets nearby so I have been outside and made a walk. Then the rest of the day..tea and reading and hopefully I can get my boyfriend a bit of the computer so I have also some TNBBC time!:-)
Heavy work week next week...

Laura (apenandzen) We'll be starting next week, Lisa, when I get my copy - unless some others come out and say they're waiting for theirs too. Heather and I started it, and she's waiting for me. Next week?????? How will I do that? Okay, one question as I don't ahve a clue what it is about but seemed to only hear about it...can I use it for the winter challenge? I have like eight books from the library for the challenge, plus Jonathan strange that i am reading too...so lots to read.

message 2622: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Are you from that country? Is it Scotland where it takes place - somebody help me out. It's over 700 pp., but you're already reading JS&MN. If your ancestry includes the country where the book takes place then you can use it for the challenge.

Fiona, did you see the picture when the page opens with the the spread where there is written 'Speculoos'? That is Belgian. Till about a year and a half ago, I think, we only had the biscuits. But we had them since...well I grew up with them. My boyfriend adores them too. And so a bit more than a year ago someoen made the spread to put on your bread from the biscuits. It is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. The biscuits are great, for me especially with a glass of cold milk.(I think that is the only time I drink milk) but this is njami njamie. To lik your fingers afterwards! My sister send one to my boyfriend after we left Belgium and he kept it like his personal treasure.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona wrote: "And biscuit spread just sounds.. awful. But might be nice, I suppose... er, as you say."

I normally don't spread stuff on bread and well I actually don't each much bread...but I would eat bread just to have the speculoos on it!

I think the speculoos biscuits you can buy in Tesco. If you like them then there is a good chance you will like the spread.

Laura (apenandzen) why not play you some classical music as you're falling asleep. Picture - I don't know - that hot guy from Outlander in his kilt.

message 2627: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Fiona wrote: "Outlander takes place in Scotland, I don't think it will fit into the winter challenge for Jeane, as she is already reading her 700+ one!"

There is a 10 pt. task where you read a book that takes place in a country that is part of your ancestry - so I thought it might fit that way for her.

message 2628: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Laura, it is magic!!!! I was reading and was thinking. Damned I really feel like reading Outlander with the rest and especially now that Fiona told me it is in Scotland...and then suddenly: Oh but I took a Ian Rankin book because it is set in Scotland and my last name starts with S...so maybe if i can get the book I might try.

message 2629: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) So you haven't read the Ian Rankin book yet? Yeah, that would be good for 25 pts. then (and it really should be for how long it is!)

message 2630: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) So it could fit for Task #1 - 25 pts or if you're part Scottish then Task #6 (10 pts) -

message 2631: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I love finding books that fit. It's surprising how you can fit books in if you really put some thought into it. There are SO many different tasks. It only gets tough when you've completed lots of them already. I've only done 11, so I have lots more to go.

message 2632: by Laura (new)

Well I was going to use Ian rankin for the 25 points as it is in Scotland and my last name is S. But now I know that I could read Outlander for that one.....

I already read the one for the task of ancestors...it was the one about the war and it happened where I live in belgium.

I think you are supposed to call them Golly dolls now . It is the wog part people objected to.

I was surprised to see Robinsons Jam still using the Golly symbol last time I was in England. I sent in labels and received a pin of a Golly in tartan playing bagpipes.

Kandice I'm 5'10". I am actually the shortest female on my side of the family! I have only brothers, all tall, but I have 3 aunts, all 6' to 6'3"!!!! So no, I am not dwarfed!

Where is Qatar?

I am sooooo glad to see you say it's not exactly a romance! I assume that means no long page descriptions of smooching! I hate that, and tend to skip those, except for a few exceptions. (Thorn Birds, Endless Love) I don't mind reading about the trials of love, but I'm familiar enough with the mechanics I don't want to rad those!!!;)

message 2648: by Kandice (last edited Jan 26, 2009 07:17AM) (new)

Kandice I can deal with that! I just hate Harlequin style books. If the romance is an aside to the actual story, that's okay. I know it Is a love story, though. The book is actually quite pretty! The cover is textured (and mine's just the regular paperback). I wonder, are they all? I love when they make a little effort like that so that it looks nice.
