I don't know why our system is the way it is; it is pretty weird when you sit and think about it. The metric system is much easier but growing up with our system, it's just second nature to me now. Pounds, ounces, feet, yards, miles, etc. if the US were to switch over to the metric system I'd be quite confused for awhile!
We went to school from elementary school all the way through high school. I probably ran into him once since then but he was a really nice guy and it's always a reality check when someone your own age dies.
I think it's a reality check no matter your age. I don't care how old I get (maybe 70?) I will still be surprised people my age can actually die. Fiona-I'm sure it's wrong, but when I read your posts, I see Kate Winslet and hear her sweet accent!
But you do have an English accent, right? Is there someone with the same one I may recognize? I could adjust my mental picture! They all sound a bit sweet to me. I just have a little southern whatever, not exciting at all!!!! (*alas*)
My family is from Denmark and we always get confused when we talk weather temp. or baby weight. Well, when I say 30C IT IS COLD here!!lol And it is supposed to be in the teens friday morning!! Here in South Carolina, We are not used to that... As long as it does not rain and freeze!

England is very confusing.....a couple of years ago I read that the Irish were changing from miles to km on traffic signs and in cars.
I got a little clock with alarm and the temperature and can press a button to see it in celsius and fahrenheit. very funny because converting it when starting from 0C and 32F doesn't make sense after a while.
Jessica wrote: "Nah, we use miles over here in the US. The use kilometers and whatnot in Canada."We use kms in Belgium, Italy, germany......I guess the 'real' Europe.
Fiona wrote: "I wish we'd change to km too.Nothing makes sense in this country. We're backwards. I dread the 2012 Olympics. Not only have we got a chavvy logo (seriously, Graffiti might be an art form but that..."
Fiona, when they presented London after the end of the last olympics...well it was a bit of a laugh. I am very curious and I hope for them they will do better then I expect them to do!
How are the works going in South London near the Dome? It didn't seem to go that well there.
I have a second interview at that company I went to on Monday. It's for a liability claims adjuster position.
Great Jessica, good luck!It is again friday tomorrow....dadadadada finishing again at 3.30 instead of 4.45!!!!! Wonder how I will be talking the last friday of the month...then we work more than normally and probably what we leave earlier on the other friday's. It is jsut fiscal month end and more work to do then. Will see how it is because it will be the first time.
Good luck, Jessica!I'm wondering if the Senate is going to be in late tonight. We were thinking so last night, but now pretty much all of the votes have happened and possibly the last one is this afternoon at 4:30. I hope it's not too late; I've already worked 30+ hours this week and it's only Thursday!
I can't believe it. Lycos just let me know that from february on my website won't be available anymore....I have so much stuff on there..... not funny at all.
Lycos is a company that provides many things and one of the things is that you can have your own website through them. it was very simple to do and free.....
Any plans for the weekend, anyone? which book is all on the must read for this weekend? I know you all have been thinking about that too!!!!! First i was thinking about trying to finish Moby Dick at home, but it is still about 150 pages.....which doesn't work easily with this book. So I am thinking about finsihing The uninvited, so at least I finish one book and not a lot of Moby Dick but still having the same two books unfinnished.
How will I do? Going to the library today but..planned not to take any boks with me. Bringing in two and could get two new ones...but still have six and have about seven of my own. Should start on those ebcause have to take my own read books to Italy otherwise I can't buy any books...... . Maybe I can say to myself trying not to take any books but if i have to only one instead of the two I can take.
I will for sure be flying in the air one day in this city!!!! I can understand that when there is a bad storm and I am at my place in belgium, that I feel like I will fly away. There are only a couple of houses and around you there are only fields, so yes I understand it. But not here! I was walking in my street, both sides houses..... arrrgggghhhhh. It is again storming so bad and raining hard. Just came back from the center and still didn't go to the library..but with this weather. Brrr and the heater still has to go on.Having something called lunch; cup of tea and a piece of pecorino cheese from Italy.

The US system of measurement and weight is quite different from the UK one, and different again from the Australian one. Its kind of insane when a recipe calls for one cup of something and in the UK that means 285 ml, in the US 237 ml and in Australia 250 ml. One pint in the US is about 16.5 oz. in the UK and Australia it is 20oz. Insane.
Hahahaha....sorry Fiona. Can't, don't want to start imagine how it would be here if we would have also the wind of there!!!!!!I didn't even go to the library because of it. One of my flatmates got out of the shop two days ago and got such a wind against her that her shopping bag opened and all her stuff fell on the ground.....she hadn't expected such a storm or what happened with her bag!!!!

Never thought about it but it would explain why some of the recipes I make don't come out quite right.
Fiona, i always have a rugsack with me (so I don't need plastic bags) but if that is full, then I need to take bags.Have been trying to read Moby Dick this afternoon as I finished The uninvited but it isn't going well. Inly read about 15 pages!!!! i just want to finish it..... And you know what? page 438 was interesting but after that back to normal.
The rugsack is heavy enough when I am moving but the storm is pretty powerful here.My boyfreind...read? To me? Suuuuuure. And all my other wishes will come true in a second too. That is wishful thinking Fiona!
Don't you feel good after doing that Fiona? :-) My sister lieks reading but doesn't read much. Or she says she doesn't ahve the time or she is tired, getting headache...she also can't read during the day. So the only tiem she reads is before going to ebd but it is in periods. So when I was staying in belgium for five months I gave her books to read, one by one, while she followed a course. so she would read a bit every day and then talk about it to me. It made me always feel so good if I gave her a book that she thought was really interesting or enjoyed!
Fionaaaaaaaa, Emileeeeeee....hehe. I can't believe it but I have like forty pages left in Moby Dick!!!!!! I think i will push so much tomorrow on th ebus adn during my lunch....... It already feels like such a triumph (how the hell do you write the word? Have the italian way in my head)!!!!!! I think I will get a big smile on my face once I finsih it.....Hopefully i don't have reading blues because I want to start the january read...The Strange book....
It is from the library, even had to pay to get it from another library! How dare you insinuating those things to me!!!!!
Okay, going to make some pasta. I think I was a bit too hungry to drink a normal tea...now I have a vomiting feeling.
Aaaahhh, don't say that! Jeane, I wish you would try Billy Budd sometime, so you don't think Melville is all rubbish. :)
Kandice, for now I am only thinking about that for Moby Dick but hey, the end is muuuuch better...but that doesn't mean much. Okay, less than ten pages to go. Not going to bed till I finished it. And tomorrow maybe MR Strange!
DON'T! I was bitten on the ear by a spider once. I had an allergic reaction. I don't know if you have ever seen Star Trek, but I SWEAR, I looked like a Ferengi! If you haven't seen one, do your google image search thingy! That was me! Gross, and right before vacation.
Well, they have those funky eyes, so maybe everything looks kind of psychedelic to them, like an acid trip or something, and they are amused just sitting there looking.Or, Maybe not.
My sons have a remote control spider. It's hairy and gross. Anyway, they use it to tease my sweet little dogs!
They have one of those too! Also a nasty RC foot! It moves a bit like a snake and has this covering that really feels like skin. The spider is the one the dogs really go for, though. It's a bit worse for wear.
I juat read the summary/synopsis of Outlander (in preapration) and this was in there:— Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser—. Why are the symbols and numbers by their name? Is that a normal thing?
I know you were up until 4 the other night, and you always seem to be here when I check in the morning! I sometimes forget you are across the world, eight hours away. My oldest son is a night owl as well. A few years ago, I gave up trying to get him to sleep at what I considered a decent hour. Now, as long as he's up, clean and dressed for the drive to school, I don't worry. He's certainly much happier.
Random thought- I buy chocolate covered digestive biscuits from a store here call All Things Bright and British. They are frighfully expensive, but I think I'm addicted. Do people in England really eat them, or am I being fooled?Oh! Also I buy lemon curd from there. Delicious, but not available in groceries here.
We have Von's here, which is owned by Safeway, but they DO NOT have lemon curd. And it's really good Fiona!!!! I don't feel so bad, because I only pay $4.99 at B&B for that. What I feel silly for is paying $7 for a tube of those "biscuits" and then eating them in an afternoon with my daughter! The non-chocolate ones are only about $4, but not very exciting.
Haha! What makes them so good is that chocolate is ON there. Plus, it may not even be true, could be the Keebler elves, but to me there's something exciting about eating something that sailed across the seas to get to me! It's weird chocolate too! Not as sweet as Toll House chips, but not as bitter as Ghiradelli's (sp?) I like Weetabix too. They're supposed to be British, but I can buy those at Von's. Really good, but not as exciting!
OK so Fiona - which one on Watership Down is your accent like? I want to watch it now that I"ve read it.Congratulations on almost being thru w/Moby Dick Jeane! And glad your job is working out.
Jessica - did you get the adjuster job?
Kandice - are you reading Outlander with us?
(I am so far behind on this thread, as you can see)
OH and Fiona - boiling in F is 212 degrees and freezing is 32 so when we say it's 50-60, you can see that's kind of cool but not too cool. To me, 70 degrees in the shade is perfect, but being pre-menopausal, I've gotten much warmer these last couple of years ;)
Jamie-Yes. We just re-watched season 4 on DVD to get ready.Laura-Yes! Fiona gave me permission to toss aside Mr. Norrell (wink, wink) Hooray! If I can't find it used, tommorrow morning, I'll get a new one. *sighs* I'm so excited to actually be reading at the same time and discussing!
My husband and I struggle over the thermostat-him 60, me-70!
OK I'm on the waiting list, so it prob won't be for another week or so if that's ok. Glad you're joining us!Fiona - you gonna do a re-read? 25 pts. for the challenge is calling you....
They are very sturdy creatures! I'm sure the spider is fineFiona-Pillars was nominated so maybe it will be the group read. You didn't say if you eat those biscuits!
I am trying to remember the farmer's accent now! I haven't seen the whole movie, but I would love to replace Winslet's voice with a more appropriate one!
Laura-you can't start reading until next week? If so, that gives me the weekend to search for a used one. Let me know. I would like to start at close to the same time!
