The metric system is much easier but growing up with our system, it's just second nature to me now. Pounds, ounces, feet, yards, miles, etc. if the US were to switch over to the metric system I'd be quite confused for awhile!

Fiona-I'm sure it's wrong, but when I read your posts, I see Kate Winslet and hear her sweet accent!

And why do we have to have both C and F in the UK? Once upon a time it w..."
England is very confusing.....a couple of years ago I read that the Irish were changing from miles to km on traffic signs and in cars.
I got a little clock with alarm and the temperature and can press a button to see it in celsius and fahrenheit. very funny because converting it when starting from 0C and 32F doesn't make sense after a while.

We use kms in Belgium, Italy, germany......I guess the 'real' Europe.

Nothing makes sense in this country. We're backwards. I dread the 2012 Olympics. Not only have we got a chavvy logo (seriously, Graffiti might be an art form but that..."
Fiona, when they presented London after the end of the last olympics...well it was a bit of a laugh. I am very curious and I hope for them they will do better then I expect them to do!
How are the works going in South London near the Dome? It didn't seem to go that well there.

It is again friday tomorrow....dadadadada finishing again at 3.30 instead of 4.45!!!!! Wonder how I will be talking the last friday of the month...then we work more than normally and probably what we leave earlier on the other friday's. It is jsut fiscal month end and more work to do then. Will see how it is because it will be the first time.

I'm wondering if the Senate is going to be in late tonight. We were thinking so last night, but now pretty much all of the votes have happened and possibly the last one is this afternoon at 4:30. I hope it's not too late; I've already worked 30+ hours this week and it's only Thursday!

Having something called lunch; cup of tea and a piece of pecorino cheese from Italy.

The US system of measurement and weight is quite different from the UK one, and different again from the Australian one. Its kind of insane when a recipe calls for one cup of something and in the UK that means 285 ml, in the US 237 ml and in Australia 250 ml. One pint in the US is about 16.5 oz. in the UK and Australia it is 20oz. Insane.

I didn't even go to the library because of it. One of my flatmates got out of the shop two days ago and got such a wind against her that her shopping bag opened and all her stuff fell on the ground.....she hadn't expected such a storm or what happened with her bag!!!!

Never thought about it but it would explain why some of the recipes I make don't come out quite right.

Have been trying to read Moby Dick this afternoon as I finished The uninvited but it isn't going well. Inly read about 15 pages!!!! i just want to finish it..... And you know what? page 438 was interesting but after that back to normal.

My boyfreind...read? To me? Suuuuuure. And all my other wishes will come true in a second too. That is wishful thinking Fiona!

How dare you insinuating those things to me!!!!!

Or, Maybe not.

My oldest son is a night owl as well. A few years ago, I gave up trying to get him to sleep at what I considered a decent hour. Now, as long as he's up, clean and dressed for the drive to school, I don't worry. He's certainly much happier.

Oh! Also I buy lemon curd from there. Delicious, but not available in groceries here.

I like Weetabix too. They're supposed to be British, but I can buy those at Von's. Really good, but not as exciting!

Congratulations on almost being thru w/Moby Dick Jeane! And glad your job is working out.
Jessica - did you get the adjuster job?
Kandice - are you reading Outlander with us?
(I am so far behind on this thread, as you can see)
OH and Fiona - boiling in F is 212 degrees and freezing is 32 so when we say it's 50-60, you can see that's kind of cool but not too cool. To me, 70 degrees in the shade is perfect, but being pre-menopausal, I've gotten much warmer these last couple of years ;)

Laura-Yes! Fiona gave me permission to toss aside Mr. Norrell (wink, wink) Hooray! If I can't find it used, tommorrow morning, I'll get a new one. *sighs* I'm so excited to actually be reading at the same time and discussing!
My husband and I struggle over the thermostat-him 60, me-70!

Fiona - you gonna do a re-read? 25 pts. for the challenge is calling you....

Fiona-Pillars was nominated so maybe it will be the group read. You didn't say if you eat those biscuits!
I am trying to remember the farmer's accent now! I haven't seen the whole movie, but I would love to replace Winslet's voice with a more appropriate one!
Laura-you can't start reading until next week? If so, that gives me the weekend to search for a used one. Let me know. I would like to start at close to the same time!
