Darn..so sorry guys. Maybe they will eventually open it up to the UK. I don't see why not. Maybe I will send them an email and ask them.

message 2403: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I hope they think about more than the uk but do Greta britiain! I always forget that the republic of Ireland isn't part og the uk but of great britain which if i still follow correctly is adding ireland to the uk...

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, I tried it for the first time iin Nottingham and liked it. I tried a little one and it was fun. Just do it slowly otherwise you might mess it up!

Book reporter-Sounds fun. Thanks Kellie!

Ann: I am so sorry. I hope your son's leg heals quickly. When will he get to see the ortho???

Jeane: Yeah on the job!

message 2410: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona: my friend from England cross stitches-it's beautiful. I personally haven't taken it up yet as I already quilt, scrapbook (cardmaking) & read. I don't need another hobby due to my OCD.

message 2411: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I'm the only one here right now. I'll just write to myself! Ha ha!

message 2412: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I love to cross-stitch. It has been awhile since I have done it. I have not found that many things out there that I want to cross-stitch. I did two really beautiful fairies for my mom that I had framed.

message 2413: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Hi Emilee. I've just come in. I went sailing and we got back late.

message 2414: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments You are suppose to start in the center of the linen or (I am drawing a blank as to what it is called)... Usually the book that you are taking the design from will show you a starting point.

message 2415: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Emilee, Yes, we went to the orthopedic and they put him in an air cast. Thank goodness our insuranes would pay for it, otherwise he would have to go into a cast. This way he can take it off for a bath.
He is doing great!! I, on the other hand, wish I had never given him that bell!!lol

Angela | 1934 comments You make X's with the cross stitch in each square. You do not backstitch until you are finished with your work (it outines what you are cross stitching)

Lke that could be a tree!!!

It is much easier to explain verbally :)

*Never mind tried to show you an example but it keeps on messing up!!*

message 2417: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) It's called Aida cloth, Angela, although I guess she could be working with linen too, but that is usually for more advanced people (x's are very small on linen usually, even when you stitch over 2 threads).

You fold it in the center both ways to find the center of the cloth. The pattern you are looking at will also show the center of the grid in both directions. (Look for arrows marking the center of the grid in each direction and find where they meet.) Then you count from the center space on the grid and on the cloth to determine where to put your first x. Then, I usually just continue from that point to finish that color in that area and move on from there. You can determine the direction you want to move in from the starting point, but the main thing is to make sure you start in the center.

Also whichever side of the X you decide to make first, make sure you make that side of the X first on every X you make. That way, when you're done, they will all look the same.

When all the X's are done, you backstitch to outline everything like Angela said. Usually they have you do this in a dark brown or a black, but sometimes the color will change from one part of the pattern to another.

:)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Thanks Kellie. Wish I could just stay home and keep reading many books like the past year.

message 2425: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments At least you will have done it and tried it. Maybe you will really like it. I also only did two little things and didn't do it anymore. but many times i want to start again.

message 2426: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Thanks for explaining that Laura!!! I explain things much better verbally... I actually have graduated to linen, which I think looks much better after it is completed and it is not as tough feeling. Aida is better to work with when you first start out though...

I think a bookmark is a good choice for a beginner!

message 2427: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, that might keep you motivated, a bookmark! You can start now and ahve it ready for the next winter holiday exchange!

message 2428: by Angela (new)

message 2429: by Jeane (new)

message 2440: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Oh, I am back!!!!!!! Todauy I had my first day at work. Not much to tell besides that I saw so many things on the computer but jsut to get an idea. I have been thinking that I wonder if you can use the internet during breaks or not...as I was wondering what went on here. But I thought I would get home around seven but arrived around six. That was a great surprise! And even e greater one seeing what there was on the bed. It is pifania in Italy and she came to me too!!!! I got chocolate: kinder chocolate, Riter, Milka and got pringles and tick tack AND the latest Patricia Cornwell book, Scarpetta. I was waiting to buy it with my first wage!!!!!!!! I am so glad. And today a package form my mother arrived too for our new year. there was chocolate in too. Cote d'or and Cote d'Or mignonette chocolates...njamie:-))))))) And my sister send me my colourful leg warmers. It feels so good to have them on because it is really cold.

message 2441: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Jeane, I hope you enjoy your packages. It's always nice to come home to a nice surprise.

Fiona, I do some cross stitching too. Although I haven't done it in awhile because I don't have the time. I'm just wondering what projects you're doing? Are they patterns you buy and stick onto the fabric? When you mentioned silks, it made me curious.

Here in the US they have mainly pillow cases with the pattern on them. Sometimes you can find the matching tapestry, but not very often. I usually would give them as gifts. I learned how to do it by watching my grandmother. She would make tons of them and give them away during the holidays and birthdays. She passed away last year, so it's nice to have something that she touched.

message 2442: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Jeane - what does njamie mean? There is a Jamaican phrase, nyam nyamie which basically means greedy from nyam - to eat.

message 2443: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm back with lots of catching up to do!

Fiona I think you would be able to find a beginner cross stitch kit. Look for a needle point or sewing store.

How was sailing Petra??

message 2444: by [deleted user] (new)

Ann I'm glad he is doing good!

message 2445: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't done cross stitch for 20 years I had done a beginning kit from a fabric store. Sometimes the places have classes. That is always a lot of fun.

message 2446: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona: The beginner kit my mom got me had the X's on it so you just had to follow it that might be the easy way to start but I haven't cross stitched in years and only did like 3 beginner kits mom got me.

message 2447: by [deleted user] (new)

I was doing a quilt a few years ago and tried to do ribbon embroidery. ended up doing an applique. I can't ribbon embroider. IT's so beautiful too!

I also tried knitting. Didn't work too well, I was all thumbs as they say.

message 2448: by [deleted user] (new)

I admire you for doing that, I would probably have too many or too less!

message 2449: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Fiona, lol, do you have special nights to shower on? Don't you bathe every day?
