Laura (apenandzen) Stroking, hm...any book hugs yet?

message 1852: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I think PS deserves at least a quick hug, if not a full-fledged embrace. Maybe even a quick peck on the book flap.

Not the crease. Avoid the crease.

message 1853: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) That's cute Fiona!

OK, I gotta go. I'm working in Santa's workshop tonight. Trying to get ready for the big day.

Good luck w/PS!

message 1854: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I can't wait till you get to the end and you can tell me what you thought of the end!!!

message 1855: by [deleted user] (new)

I always have a book in my hand. Maybe we are twins seperated at birth. Ha ha.

message 1856: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh my it took me less the 12 minutes to eat dinner! The sad thing is that I'm still hungry!

message 1857: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) spread some cream cheese on a few Triscuits, Emilee, you'll be smilin' in no time!

:)

hee hee!

well off to work on cmas gifts!

message 1858: by [deleted user] (new)

I need to do the christmas cards. We made them again this year which took two full days over last weekend. I just need to write and mail them all.

Have fun Laura!

Are you sticking around Fiona?

message 1859: by [deleted user] (new)

I use to do that but took a card making class last year & had a blast.

They do cost a bit more but I felt like I was giving something a little more heart felt. I kinda wish I could buy all my friends gifts but can't so I figure that the cards are a kind of gift I guess.

message 1860: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not that good I do basic & simple. My girlfriend however is absolutely amazing!

message 1861: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Hi there, how's everyone this evening? My mother used to get Terry's chocolate oranges but she hid them. But she was very lazy so she would say, Go and get the chocolate from the secret hiding place. I used to unwrap them and tap them hard and then all the segments would fall backwards. It looked pretty.

message 1862: by [deleted user] (new)

That is funny. I don't let my children know where I hide them. And they don't go outside to my freezer in the garage because it's cold out.

message 1863: by [deleted user] (new)

I use to have one in my sock drawer in my room but my kids discovered it. Now I hid them in my bag that I take to work everyday. But three days ago I put it by the heater. Yeah what a fun mess I had! Thank goodness I had them in a ziplock bag or they would have gotten on five of my precious books.

message 1864: by [deleted user] (new)

I use to get into my father's cookies. He didn't figure it out until my brother saw me get into them and my brother would take handfuls.

message 1865: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm signing out. Have to help the kids w/homework and I need to try to go to bed early. Our new kitten is keeping us up at night. Imagine that!

message 1866: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm slow logging off. My daughter took some on her phone she needs to my email so I can change my avi. I should do that when the homework is done.

message 1867: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) My cafe officially opened yesterday and we actually did a bit of business. Today we did much more, coffees, our homemade and fabulous chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies and toasties. All to cruise shippers though. So I shall stop being so horrible about them. First time my cafe has ever made over $100! (Fixed costs $120, so I'm not breaking even yet!)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Just reading thru this thread.
I really wanted a cuppa tea Fiona. That orange chocolate sounded delicious!
Anyone there?

message 1869: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Oh goody! Can't wait.
that orange chocolate reminds me of this candy that comes out especially during X-mas.
It's wrappend in orange wrapper. Looks like an orange. It is cut in segments like an orange. It's sooooo good. One of my favorite holiday candies.
I need to put that on my Santa list...

Good night Fiona. Sweet dreams!

message 1870: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments I've just been given Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver as December's read for our Book Club and I gather from the little that I've read about it here that it's gonna be a good one. Yes??

message 1871: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Yes Laura I was talking about that lovely book called Prodigal summer!!!!!:-))))

Fiona, you know I don't eat the englsih chocolate but that terry orange kinda chocolate is suprisingly good. THe thought of mixing those two didn't really attract me first but I liked it in the end. I love how it falls open like an orange can be done.
I used to get them for a pound when working in WHSith but to buy them full price, it is just too much.

message 1872: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Melody, it is a great book!

message 1873: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Was your Hershey just regular milk chocolate or Special Dark Fiona? That is the key, my friend.

message 1874: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) And your eye looks especially creepy today.

message 1875: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Have you tried Special Dark by Hershey? It's dark choc.

message 1876: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I def. have to make one of those. I like it that they are small, although if you eat 4 because they're small, I guess that's not too good. Unless you need to GAIN weight, wish I had that problem!

Do you prefer dark chocolate, or do you just like a smooth creamy chocolate?

message 1877: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Do you have a good recipe for mince pies, Fiona? I'd like a genuine one :)

message 1878: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, I adored The horse whisperer but it wasn't my favorite...you let them there alone.....

:-)))) Fiona..I tried English chocolate without prejudice and it was like eating water and chemicals together!!!!! But it is a way to not eating chocolate.....

I am going to send my holiday exchange this week!!! Really hope she will like it......

message 1879: by [deleted user] (new)

The best chocolate I ever had was when I was in Sweden. I don't remember the name. Wish I did.

I do like Ghirardelli Chocolate. Really can't stand Tootsie Rolls. I don't think it's really chocolate at all but some people tell me it is.

message 1880: by [deleted user] (new)

I have the same problem with some threads not showing new. Pain. I guess we just have to refresh all the time.

message 1881: by [deleted user] (new)

I must have a ranting moment. And no offense to anyone who works in a medical billing office.

So I work in insurance and we have all these different departments. If one more medical billing specialist calls to complain to me about I am going to scream! Okay so I don't do anything with processing the bills, I don't see the bills, I don't issue a check or a denial. Yet, these people just don't hear in English when I tell them they need to call the billing department. Then the #itch & complain. UGH!

Sorry just sick of it. Had a stupid lady yell at me then kept calling me instead of calling the right department.

Okay thanks for reading! Now to happy thoughts.

message 1882: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Wow. Nice vents. Hmm..yes. Such behavior does start somewhere. Good point.

message 1883: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Should have posted her phone no. on a spamming site on the net.

message 1884: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments And now let's all buy this and have relaxing, sweet dreams

http://acornonline.com/product.asp?pn...

I hate people who have dogs but don't care about the and don't care about other people around them!!! People should have to pass an exam before getting an animal. Why do they give themselves problems taking a dog if they don't care about them? How stupid is that!

message 1885: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I would like to see all these societies for pedigrees banned. There were very few cat or dog breeds a century ago compared to the large numbers of them now. Most started by breeding a mutation to mutation in the same family or selecting for different characteristics (not necessarily by inbreeding). By the time the breed was established there was only a small pool of acceptable animals and now look.... But as long as people are willing to pay huge amounts of money for a dog that is guaranteed a pure pedigree it will survive, its a business. Me, I think dogs are about love and companionship. All dogs are capable of that.

message 1886: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Dogs are wonderful in that Petra. All of my dogs have there own little story of what happened, how they came with us...and I hope we are giving them all a good, lovely life. We have so much to give back to them and so many people give nothing back besides misery.

message 1887: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Why on earth would anyone have deliberately bred the pit bull breed I don't know. That breed should be allowed to die out.

message 1888: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't know that Calvier King Charles dogs get headaches. I have two of them they are the sweetest most cuddly dogs every.

Petra: Pit bulls are wonderful. It all comes from who the owner and if they are good or evil. My family all have pit bulls. It started with Mar she's seven years old. She is such a loving dog. She had 9 puppies last year and the rest of the famiy kept some. These dogs love their owners and will do anything for their owners. My family love dogs and treat them with love and kindness so they aren't the violent kind you hear about. They play well with my children. As a matter of fact when Mar was a puppy my son was born and those two were in seperable. She was always right by the baby. They have this special little bond. All these dogs have never tried to hurt anyone. They just want to play and have fun.

What happens is that these evil people who do the dog fighting or the cock/rooster fighting train these animals to be vicious mean animals. It all comes in "who" the owner is and how they treat the animal. Most vicious pit bulls are taught to fight and be mean. Unfortunitly, instead of hearing about the soft loving tender side of this bred. The public only hears about the mean side of the dogs-which strictly comes from the owners "nuturing" side.

Before my brother got his pit I would have completely agreed with you but after being around these dogs I can tell you it is a misconception. It you train the pit to get your newspaper he'll get your newspaper. They will do anything to please their owner. SO if the owner teaches them to be violent they will be violent.

I love huskey dogs and they are gentle animals. But growing up on our block their was this horrible family that taught their huskey to attack the kids. If I hadn't of had other great experiences with Huskey's I would have thought that they were a violent breed of dog.

It all comes down to the owners. In our world I think we have too many evil people.

We got hit with lots of snow last night. Yuck! My snowblower doesn't work so I am contemplating if I should shovel or not.

I don't like snow.

message 1890: by [deleted user] (new)

I should take a picture as I need to get a picture of my new cat.

There is a cute book called "A Little Bit of Winter". It's a children's book but I love it. It's about a hedgehog who asks his Rabbit friend to save him some winter for when he is done hybernating. Cute story.

message 1891: by [deleted user] (new)

where did everyone go????

message 1892: by Petra X (last edited Dec 06, 2008 07:19AM) (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Emilee, I lived next door to some people (not dog fighting types) who had several dogs, including a pit bull. When it was about four years old it got out through the fence and into the garden next door and attempted to rip the little girl who was visiting to shreds for what reason no-one knows, she wasn't a stranger. It was, of course, put down.

I have a friend, a professional windsurfer and artist who paints animal portraits. She owns three rottweilers and two pit bulls. She says the rotties who are guard dogs for her property (she has a huge place) are ok if they know you and her cockatoo, Angel, who doesn't like flying walks all over them and sometimes sleeps with them! But she says though the pit bulls are just pets I should never be alone with them. She says that much as she loves them, the breed is too unstable to be guard dogs and that they might not stop at just barking at people they think might be intruders.

I don't think that pit bulls are inherently evil but they were bred to be a fighting dog. I think that your experience is probably true for most owners of pit bulls. But there has to be a reason why, in the UK, pit bulls alone among dogs, I believe, are required to be muzzled and on a lead at all times in public and all are required to be sterilized. They can't all have evil owners.

I want a Yorkie anyway. (Something small enough to pop in my bag and take to work. I think those little dogs have as big personalities as the bigger ones).

message 1893: by [deleted user] (new)

Pit Bulls are very strong dogs and have the physical capablity to harm. I don't question that at all. But there are a lot of unstable dogs. I think the Nature vs Nuture comes into play with animals just like humans. I would bet that the Pit was very unstable.

We had a Austrian Shephard/Border Collie pup for about 1 1/2. She was a beautiful dog but something wasn't right with her head. She had to be muzzled at the groomers and the groomer finally after 6 months refused to groom her anymore. She was so unstable we had to get rid of her, which broke my heart but she started snapping and biting at the me & the kids. I was so bummed and Shephards/collies are suppose to be great breeds. Like I said we think something was mentally wrong with her. My other dog didn't like being in the same room with her and he loves animals. He is always cuddling our older cat.

My Mom use to have a Mini Yorkie. It was the darn cutest dog. Did not like little children. That is a breed that doesn't like small children for some odd reason. I know a lot of people with Yorkies and that is a common thread. SOmeone told me because small children pull hair. Which would make sense. My mom's Yorkie was great.

message 1894: by [deleted user] (new)

Taking the kids to see Wicked today. I'm excited. I haven't seen it for a year. We are going out for lunch too.

message 1895: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Maybe I won't get a Yorkie then. Actually the reason I wanted a Yorkie was there is a boatyard here and it has Yorkies as guard dogs, two of them! Either they don't have any real problems with intruders or there are a few people walking around with nipped ankles. When my son and I go to the boatyard we are always amused by how the Yorkies patrol the area and all the noise they make at people who come in. They are always friendly to us though.

message 1896: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Emilee, I agree with you. Completely or at least a big deal of how a dog is depends on the ones who own or owned the dog. Yes, you have the so-called dangerous dogs....but where day dangerous before people interfered once in the past?????? In general I don't think so, but of course there might be some dogs in this world that behave dangerous without interference of humans but much less.
It might sound radical but then again I am not happy to be part of the human race either....can't agree with this: an animal even just hurts a person (many times the reason why is going back to something the person did (like a dog biting a child after the child used the tale or ears to play with) and most of the times the dog is put down. A person tortures a dog or hurts him and if you are lucky they get fined, if you are even a little bit luckier that person can never get a dog anymore, even if they aren't checked on that.......sorry but where did we get the thing that we are so superior to animals????? We destroy nature constantly and animals are hurt or killed to feed us.....we must be of such a low level to even think it is normal!

something else: i went to print something out at the library for the irish kind od national insurance number, some proof of address and we asked of that would be okay too for the library and they said yes. So now my changes to get a library card next week went from zero to at least 90 percent!!!!!! While my boyfriend was printing the copies out i managed to start reading two books in the library!!! I am so desperate....

message 1897: by [deleted user] (new)

Yorkies bark a lot! My mom's yorkie would bark whenever anyone walked past the house on the sidewalk. They are very friendly dogs they just don't like small children.

I love my Cavlilier King Charles dogs they are great. Not too big not too small. I had a short haired fox terrier when I was little she was a great dog. My sister has a doberman & a boxer. Love the boxer. The doberman is dumb and annoying. The rest of the family has pit's they are great. I've also had cocker spanials they are wonderful.

I read a book about picking the perfect Breed of dog. It was very brief about 1 page per breed but gave some great insight on if they are kid friendly, medical needs ect. I'll try to find the book for you.

message 1898: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay found the book: Choosing a Dog for Life by Andrew De Prisco.

message 1899: by [deleted user] (new)

Studies have shown that children/adults who abuse animals usually abuse significant others/children and are usually violent criminals (murders/rapists).

Anyone to hit, kick or harm any human or animal should be punished by society but like that would happen.

message 1900: by [deleted user] (new)

some countries like China & Japan have prisons that are so horrible that criminals tend to go there once and change their ways because they are miserable.

In the US half the criminals are in/out all the time. They look at their time in as schooling on worse crimes and free home/meals. But a lot of time in the US some of the violent and horrible crimes go without punishment at all and the criminals get worse.

I don't know it's sad. The worse is that it seems like violence is getting worse not better. I hate watching the news to here about al lthe violent crimes.
