Laura (apenandzen) Wow cool website Fiona! So in P&P when they said Darcy had 20,000 a year, that converts (using 1850, not sure when the book actually took place) to like 2.4 million! No wonder all the mothers wanted to marry their daughters off to that guy.

*swoon*

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I feel the same about all those new fancy buildings or all the new houses without any character that are build now adn what has to make place for it.....

Where did you go in Belgium Fiona? I would like to go to Normandie once.

It makes me sad when I see people of my age not caring about their grandparents or jsut when they feel they have to. Maybe I also feel jealous but more angry. I never knew my grandafathers. I did know my grandmothers but one died when I was five years old and the other one about nine years ago. I wish they would still be here. I would like to know so much more from my grandmother who died when I was five. Or my grandfathers...they must have so much to tell about a time I never experienced and can never experience....

Now I live in Dublin and have this desire to found out so much about its history and the one of Ireland in general.

Laura (apenandzen) Ooh! Did anyone watch the Grinch last night???

:)

message 1807: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Oh I'm so glad you're enjoying it.

I have a feeling this means I might have to go back to re-reading it too. I only read thru to the end of Ch. 1 w/the parks lady and her new hunter friend. I wish I had the audio version, I could at least work on my Cmas gifts and read it at once.

YAY I don't feel like such a Book Nazi now.

message 1808: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) So Fiona did you research your family history, or are you going by what your parents have told you. I'm a bit of a genealogy buff myself. It's like a disease. You can't kill the bug once it attaches to you. Highly addicting. Maybe even more than this place.

message 1809: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Wow. I've gotten back to Europe on most of my lines, and I have this weird fear of long flights thing. But I would love to continue it. Most of my lines go to Germany, one is in Ireland, and I think my husband's King line goes back to England.

message 1810: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I think it's fascinating too. So many surnames! It's alot of fun. It was so cool finding some Irish, I always thought of myself as a phony wearing green on St. Patty's Day. Then found a Sullivan from Killarney. Which was so cool, cuz I've always loved that Bing Crosby song "Christmas in Killarney"

(It really doesn't take much to thrill me.)

Just the names would be great to understand. I think last names are fascinating. It must be nice to have your last name Fiona, everyone can say it and spell it.

message 1811: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments My daughter's name is Quinn Smith.
Ha Ha Ha!! :)
Smith is so common I had to think of a first name that wasn't. Quinn is not used often here. I guess when it is it's a boys name or last name.

message 1812: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah or spotted and bug-eyed.

message 1813: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) *failed at trying to bait the jaguar*

message 1814: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments We call my daughter "Quinnie" a lot. Or "Q"
I love the name.

message 1815: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I like it too - first or last, it's a winner in my book!

message 1816: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) YUK

*shivers*

Well at least it wasn't a spider with their dead little legs, all at right angles.

message 1817: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) You do miss words, you need to get in tune to the audiobook thing Fiona. Def. the fact that you've already read it is why you can work & listen. I wish I could work & listen to a book, since I work from home, and am usually alone. I would love to be able to do both. I don't think it's possible though, unless your work is completely mindless, like filing, or cleaning.

message 1818: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona: thanks for the conversion link! Not that I'm traveling anywhere but I love to dream!

message 1819: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't like the audio books much because I tend to space out! It is more like background noise.

message 1820: by [deleted user] (new)

I think i'm the only one here! :(

message 1821: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I enjoyed reading this thread but I don't know how to join in. Anyway I think everyone's going to bed, so night night.

message 1822: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) butt butt

butt butt

butt

where's everyone?

*tiny butt*

...... gone

;-)

message 1823: by [deleted user] (new)

sorry Fiona. I couldn't get back into the group after my last post. There was some error. So i read!

message 1824: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't stay on long. But will be back in about 8 hours! Darn work. just wanted to check in!

message 1825: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments yesyesyes Fiona, you like Prodigal summer!!!!! I am so glad.Laura, do read it further, it becomes great and like Fiona said all the different parts come together.

Yes Fiona, Iper is in Belgium, in the Flanders. It is about half an hour by car from where I live and there is the Last Post to remember the people who fought. It is an emotional place there, expecially if you know what happened. Around there gas was also used for the first time during the war.

Fiona, You do know a lot about your background! I don't even have family...besides the theoretical part that those people are called my family and the only ones I concidered my family, my grandmothers, aren't with me anymore....
You do see a lot Quinn in Dublin and I always have to think about you Fiona! There is even the supermarket here nearby called Superquinn :-)))

I hate it when you don;t want to stop reading and go to bed, but that your eyes decide it is time and make it blurry.....

Why do companies take so long to elt you know if you get an interview?????

message 1826: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, I can picture it very well and it looks wonderful!!!!!

message 1827: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Jeane, were you talking about Prodigal Summer or another book that I should read? I've read PS and glad you helped me make Fiona read it. It's hard strapping a jaguar to the chair, and even harder affixing the spectacles to her wandering eyeballs, but it was worth it, as she seems to like it!

:)

message 1828: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I get a stiff neck from sitting too long in front of this blasted keyboard!

HUMPH!

message 1829: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I'll take some cc and crackers, if you're gettin' up.

So maybe I need to put my monitor on a stand. When I sit up straight, which I hardly ever do, the top of the monitor is even with the top of my nose. Too low?

message 1830: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I do, for both, and have for years. I think it's just too damn much GR and work - all keyboard. They are better, but they'd be great if I could touch the keyboard nevermore!

message 1831: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) That's a thought, Fiona, I'll have to consider it! Wonder if it would help?

message 1832: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Another thing I do alot is I hold up my arms when I type instead of resting them on the desk. Then my shoulders and neck get sore - and arms.

:(

Half the time I dont even know I'm doing it.

message 1833: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Like slightly off the desk. I don't always rest my elbows on the desk.

Oooh, what kinda chocolate?

message 1834: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona I have family from Sussex, Kent, & Yorkshire. Sadly they moved to the US. Okay I like it here but I so want to at least visit England and see where my family lived. If you want to do genealogy let me know I can help!

message 1835: by [deleted user] (new)

Laura I get a stiff neck too! I have to work on a computer all day so I wiggle a lot in my chair!

message 1836: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona: those oranges are my favorite candy. I can usually only find them this time of year so I stock up. They freeze well but don't last with me in the house!

message 1837: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I'm the only one here! :( boo-hoo.

message 1838: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hi Emilee! I've never seen those oranges before I don't think?? Do they taste at all orange-y?

message 1839: by [deleted user] (new)

The taste like orange sticks. Orange/chocolate taste. It's to die for. Target out by me carries it so does Jewel/Albertsons.

message 1840: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) See I don't like anything orange flavored. I like actual oranges.

Maybe it's because my mom was WAY into St. Joseph's aspirin for children when I was growing up, so I associate orange flavor w/feeling sick?

Whatcha reading these days Emilee?

message 1841: by [deleted user] (new)

It must be a mom thing to like the St. Joseph Aspirin. My mom gave those to me all the time when I was sick.

Okay so I am reading sooooo much. Tonight I am going to try to concentrate on Good Omens. But currently reading 13 books. I leave one at work, one in the car. I just need to read 24/7 but can't.

message 1842: by [deleted user] (new)

I need to go buy a bunch of those oranges.

I love oranges but fresh OJ is the best!

message 1843: by [deleted user] (new)

Does anyone know what happened to Ken? I haven't talked to him for a while and miss his great insight.

message 1844: by [deleted user] (new)

And where did Iki & Boof disappear too?

message 1845: by [deleted user] (new)

It's actually rather easy. Though I find it takes me longer. But it's a broad range of books so if I'm in the mood for scary I read teh scary book, classic then read the classic. I've always been a little nuts that way.

message 1846: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I've been wondering about Boof, but now that you mention it, Iki too!

Ken comes on, just not as often. I think when he quit GR for awhile, he found he got alot more reading done, and just regular house stuff too.

message 1847: by [deleted user] (new)

I had to put Cider House Rules down after the descriptive porn picture. I finished it and really liked the book except for that part.

When I read the first few chapters of Heart Shaped Box it gave me the creeps so I left that book at work to read in the daytime hours.

message 1848: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Wow 13 books? I'm reading I think 5 now, but I can't imagine going that high!

message 1849: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) How's PS Fiona?

message 1850: by [deleted user] (new)

okay taking an eating break but I'll be back!
