What did you think about the setting, the future-Arabesque ghetto known as the Budayeen? Was it believable as a potential future location? Did you appreciate Effinger's detailing (of clothing, food/drink/drugs, professions, pastimes, politics, religion?) How about the way he used language to enhance his world?
I don't know enough about the present day culture to answer. I had the impression it was not that much different than now. Except for the brain plugs and the near space travel, it is not that much of a science fiction.
