If you hated that one you might as well hate all of them, they will have their amazing twists and turns, scientific methods, back stories, etc.

Infact u should hv read a study in scarlet first b4 any other novel....it introduces us to watson and holmes as its the very first novel

"The Sign of Four" was the first Sherlock Holmes book I read, I liked it very much. Then I read others: A study in Scarlet, The hound of the Baskervilles,The valley of fear, ...
May be it wasn't the best of them, but it certainly was good. (at least one of the top four)
All the novels are good, particularly a Study in Scarlett and the Hound of the Baskervilles. Some of the short stories are less good (especially in the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes), but some of the short stories are just brilliant (like the Speckled Band).

1. The Hound of the Baskervilles
2. The Valley of Fear
3. A Study in Scarlet
4. The Sign of Four
Now I rank them this way after one read through each. I'm sure that I will re-read them in the near future and my opinions will change, but that's how I see it for now.
But despite making this list, I find that it was ultimately useless as each novel has a special place in my heart. I must say that after reading The VoF, I was really blown away by the twists and turns more so than any other Sherlock Holmes novel. The So4 was slightly more complex than the others and so I thoroughly believe a second reading will help me appreciate it more than I did before. I have a deep appreciation for A SiS as it introduced me to Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his companion, Dr John Watson. And The HotB is an all-time classic, and I was totally cheering for Dr. Watson.
Now if you were to start a discussion on our favorite Sherlock Holmes short stories then you can bet that I will be there.

I would nominate Exit Sherlock Holmes

Just awful. Maudlin, histrionic, prolonged speeches from Watson about how he feels towards Holmes and musings on why doesn't Holmes have emotion like other human beings. I wanted there to be, some revelation that Holmes was actually a cyborg sent back in time from the future!
Ok, I hated this one because of the flashback. I didn't understand that it was going to be a third of the book.

1-A Study in Scarlet
2-The Sign of Four
3-The Valley of Fear
4-The Hound of the Baskervilles
A Study in Scarlet was great, The Sign of Four was not bad, The Valley of Fear I liked the first part but not the second one. It wasn't too bad though. But The Hound of the Baskervilles I didn't like it at all. I enjoyed the first and last chapters but the ones where there were no Holmes and just Dr. Watson describing people and places uuuh I found it boring.

Who in his right mind would write a series featuring Inspector Lestrade? Du'oh!
