☠ Daniel I think only the second part is the worst.

Gerd Cryptic writings... do you mean to say that you thought "Sign of the Four" to be the worst of Doyle's Holmes stories?

Sarah Seriously... Come on! The sign of four was brilliant!
If you hated that one you might as well hate all of them, they will have their amazing twists and turns, scientific methods, back stories, etc.

Nick Clark The Sign of Four is by far my favorite Sherlock Holmes story.

Poojan I agree with u nick

Amelia May I disagree, this was much better than "A Study in Scarlet"

Sophie I quite enjoyed The Sign of Four, and i agree with Amee-chan, it was a lot better than A Study in Scarlet.

Rohit how abt the casebook of sherlock holmes and the valley of fear???...........these r the only 2 sherlock holmes book i m yet to read...

Katie all of the books are awesome

Infact u should hv read a study in scarlet first b4 any other novel....it introduces us to watson and holmes as its the very first novel

Abderrahmane ARB Hello,

"The Sign of Four" was the first Sherlock Holmes book I read, I liked it very much. Then I read others: A study in Scarlet, The hound of the Baskervilles,The valley of fear, ...

May be it wasn't the best of them, but it certainly was good. (at least one of the top four)

All the novels are good, particularly a Study in Scarlett and the Hound of the Baskervilles. Some of the short stories are less good (especially in the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes), but some of the short stories are just brilliant (like the Speckled Band).

Pickle i didnt enjoy A Sign of Four as much as i did A Study in Scarlet but i will continue with the series.

David I read all four novels and here is my personal ranking of them.

1. The Hound of the Baskervilles
2. The Valley of Fear
3. A Study in Scarlet
4. The Sign of Four

Now I rank them this way after one read through each. I'm sure that I will re-read them in the near future and my opinions will change, but that's how I see it for now.

But despite making this list, I find that it was ultimately useless as each novel has a special place in my heart. I must say that after reading The VoF, I was really blown away by the twists and turns more so than any other Sherlock Holmes novel. The So4 was slightly more complex than the others and so I thoroughly believe a second reading will help me appreciate it more than I did before. I have a deep appreciation for A SiS as it introduced me to Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his companion, Dr John Watson. And The HotB is an all-time classic, and I was totally cheering for Dr. Watson.

Now if you were to start a discussion on our favorite Sherlock Holmes short stories then you can bet that I will be there.

Jake I throughly enjoyed The Sign Of Four.

John Actually, the worst Sherlock Holmes book ever written was Sherlock 2028 by Tom Dulaney.

light what is remarkable about this book is the eyewitness account of the sepoy mutiny...indeed beautiful

Penny Out of the four i have read "The Valley of Fear" was just borring. I enjoyed the second part of the book, but it made me wonder why it was not a book in itself

Mike Franklin I consider The Sign of Four to be one of the weaker Holmes books. Still good but not as good as others. Holmes discovered the murder but that was about it and, by his standards, that didn't turn out to be a very difficult task. The majority of the 'story' had to be told to him. This is less 'complete' than Holmes' usual style where he pins down almost the entire story based on the evidence.

I would nominate Exit Sherlock Holmes Exit Sherlock Holmes by Robert Lee Hall

Just awful. Maudlin, histrionic, prolonged speeches from Watson about how he feels towards Holmes and musings on why doesn't Holmes have emotion like other human beings. I wanted there to be, some revelation that Holmes was actually a cyborg sent back in time from the future!

Ok, I hated this one because of the flashback. I didn't understand that it was going to be a third of the book.

Somia My ranking to the books is:
1-A Study in Scarlet
2-The Sign of Four
3-The Valley of Fear
4-The Hound of the Baskervilles

A Study in Scarlet was great, The Sign of Four was not bad, The Valley of Fear I liked the first part but not the second one. It wasn't too bad though. But The Hound of the Baskervilles I didn't like it at all. I enjoyed the first and last chapters but the ones where there were no Holmes and just Dr. Watson describing people and places uuuh I found it boring.

Matt I always thought (from what I've read) that ACD's best works in the Holmes cannon were the short stories. For whatever reason, they just seemed to flow better. That said, I thought the Sign of Four was much better than A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear.

Feliks Look at this weird series

Who in his right mind would write a series featuring Inspector Lestrade? Du'oh!

Feliks Friggin' craziness! Who commissioned this series of books? The Fraternal Order of Police, maybe? Scotland Yard Benevolent Society? They felt Conan Doyle was giving their officers a bad rep? So they're striking a blow in favor of plodding, lunkhead, thick-skulled police inspectors around the globe, I guess? Geez
