Sanjiv | 429 comments I was going to post this in Bag of Holding, but I figure here would be more appropriate.

So I recently picked up (and kinda dropped) DnD, but a lot of King Killer seemed to resonate with it. I could see how a Kvothe-like character could be built and sculpted from the existing rule mechanics. The various items he collects fit, as do the 'skills' he has and develops.

Did Rothfuss say something about being inspired by the game? (I recall this from a Sword and Laser Podcast)

Actually yes, Pat has played D&D...I think he played the AD&D version. He has confirmed that he would like to eventually make his world into a campaign format, but not using the D20 D&D system, he would use the Hero System of gaming. I'm not familiar with Hero, but apperantly its a little more open.

I've noticed some things that definately resounded with D&D, like the fae reaction to Iron. In D&D all fae are effected by cold iron and some of their defenses cannot be used. Also a lot of fae can appear differently by using spell like abilities or even be completely invisible.

Kvothe is very reminiscent of the bard character class in the game as well. Not to mention, the back story...Kid's parents are slain by some evil thing and said kid grows up to avenge there spirit, is just about every D&D backstory I EVER freakin' read as DM.

I'd say, a lot can be compared to the RPG, but thats sort of the point of D&D. To encompass all of fantasy so you can play out your own for fun.

Sanjiv | 429 comments Who here plays pen and paper RPGs? I've dabbled in DnD3.5/4.0 and Pathfinder.

I've played D&D 3.0/3.5, and 4.0. Thought 4.0 really sucked though, dumbed it way down in my opinion.

Thats really the only table top I've played though, I played a smattering of Ravenloft, but not much. Heard Pathfinder was immensely popular and Warhammer also.

I'm not going to lie, its hard to get a good group together. I mostly just play MTG now, its easy to teach and easy to get people to play.
