I have just become the moderator of this group through the remarkably rigorous process of clicking on the link "become the moderator." My first act is to see if there is any interest in doing a group reading..and since it's the featured image for the group, I put forward Sartre's Nausea (a short novel you can easily read within a month). Let me know if there is any interest in this suggestion as well as alternative titles to be considered.

Rob the Obscure I have been wondering if this group was ever going to re-spark. It's been dead a long time.

I'm interested in group reads.

Perhaps it was just suffering from existential ennui? Rob--what do you think of Nausea or do you have a different suggestion?

Rob the Obscure I've only read excerpts of Nausea, so I'd be up for that. Other potentials: Camus - Stranger, Camus - Plague, Walker Percy - the Moviegoer

message 5: by Marcus (new)

Marcus (marcuscleaver) | 7 comments Definitely up for that as well. It's been too long since I read Nausea.

I'm not sure of the best way to handle this. Perhaps a couple of weeks to get some responses here---maybe I can dig up some interest from the other philosophy-related groups; then give the month of June for reading and discussion? People can post any time during that month as long as they indicate SPOILERS (for example: SPOILER: In the next scene, Rocquentin sits at a cafe and feels disgusted....SPOILER: R. goes into a museum and feels disgusted...etc.! )

I have noticed other groups get their book club "featured" with an image---how is that possible?

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

So only Rob and Marcus have responded to the group reading idea so far. Is anyone else in this group around? The three of us can certainly talk about the book but I don't know if this group is viable any longer---unless there's more activity.

message 8: by Marcus (new)

Marcus (marcuscleaver) | 7 comments Maybe it's worth just going with a book for a few months and then the small number of us here can discuss it (and the wider philosophy) and try and drum up support from elsewhere at the same time?

Rob the Obscure Might work. Whoever decides to be involved needs to state their commitment to read on a schedule and participate in the comments on the forum. Otherwise, it won't work well.

If you look at the time stamps between the posts above, you will see what I mean. (Given the small numbers)

Jelenche | 2 comments Hello there! I wasn't active on Goodreads for a while, so I'm up for any group reads... some Sartre or Dostoyevsky would be great. Hoping to see some more people around here...

I'm up for a read & discussion too.

p.s. how many moderators can a group have? Noticed the option for me to click "become a moderator" was up, too - hope I did not affect your spot by clicking it... was curious :)

message 12: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (lvbelleame) | 1 comments I just joined Goodreads and I've never done a group reading thing, but I'd be very interested in giving it a go. I don't have any of the books mentioned (for shame) but am very willing to get whatever is decided upon. :)

Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre it is! We should start in July. I'll prepare a group mailing.

message 14: by Rob the Obscure (new)

Rob the Obscure I assume we will all read at the same pace?

message 15: by Mdk (new)

Mdk I'm glad this group is active, even though I'm a new member myself. Looking forward to having accountability to read. Kind of hard with OCD and ADD.

message 16: by Rob the Obscure (new)

Rob the Obscure I just ordered the book. So, now I'm invested.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

The book has my vote for one of the worst covers ever. Is that existential "nausea" or is it indigestion? is the cure Pepto Bismol or a radical understanding of our ungrounded freedom?

message 18: by Rob the Obscure (new)

Rob the Obscure It's marketing.

message 19: by Marcus (new)

Marcus (marcuscleaver) | 7 comments I have the Penguin Modern Classics one which just has a photo of the damp ground around a park bench, taken by Richard Kalvar. Perfect.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Marcus--I have never seen that version available. Is it out of print. I'd like to get a new copy for the group read.

message 21: by Marcus (new)

Marcus (marcuscleaver) | 7 comments It's the only version I've ever seen in shops; maybe it's just a UK edition? The intro by James Wood is also very good, I found an extract here.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Rob and Marcus.

message 24: by Jelenche (new)

Jelenche | 2 comments I just got mine too, I'll be reading Serbian translation... anyone else reading non- English edition?

message 25: by Scott W. (new)

Scott W. Vincent (swvincent) That penguin modern classic version does have a nice cover! Interesting too about the intro.

message 26: by Rob the Obscure (new)

Rob the Obscure Where do I find the summary of the reading schedule? I've lost it.

message 27: by Littlevision (new)

I apologize for the late posting of the threads. I've been so busy the last couple of days, and I'll also be gone for a while longer on a trip. But I'll be back!

Rob, the reading schedule can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/event/show/1...

I'm reading a mobi version of the book. Could you be a little more specific about the sections we read every week? (e.g. reading until p. 40 = is there a textual reference where we stop?) I'm thinking that this would be useful for other persons that use different editions.
