Its funny that you said: " if your club is about YA books, don't name it "The Talking Sandwich"", because I once had a YA Book Club....I named it Piece of Pie XD

it's pretty simple. Basically you participate in different topics around the club and I give you a certain amount of points [depending on what you do] and the member that gets more points gets to pick one book for us to read in the month. You can see the account of points for this past October here :)

I was wondering that, too.
Well, I always just use photobucket to add text and edit, as to where I get the pictures I just look around on tumblr :)

Anyways, great advice!

I recently started a YA group (with my friend) and your tips have really helped!
And if anyone wants to join it's called !YA Heroines!

I've just started a group if anyone would like to join Y.A readers everywhere*
In need of some more members and a moderator or 2. Thanks :)

Thank You so much! :)
Thank You so much! :)

Well, you know your stuff. I'm looking for a group; I think this is it. Yeah, I have a book to push, but you'll not hear about it for a while--I'm mostly here to learn. I hope I can contribute to the discussion and be generally helpful.

I just created a group called 'libboo clicks!'
In this group everyone can post their llibboo links and click on other ones!
So please check it out!
thanks,
Flore

I hope I will be able to make my club come to life :)
thanks so much you rock
God bless

Well, here's my advice for all of those who want to start a new club, and to those of you whom are just curious.
Disclosure: this advice does not guarantee that your club will get 500 members in one day or that they work for every club, neither am I saying I'm an expert. This are just the things that I did and they worked for me at least.
Why I started the club:
Before I started YABC I was a very active member in all the YA clubs around Goodreads, I was always playing in the games, reading along and following discussions. But then I wanted to do certain activities or things and the clubs didn't had them. Or a club would have one thing and another club would have the other. and so, like a wise man said:
"If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must be the one to write it"
-Nicholas Sparks
I just changed a few things and it sounded something like this: "If there was a club I really wanted to participate in, but hadn't been created yet, then I was going to be the one to make it." and I did!
Making It:
When someone invites me to a new club and I see that there is only one topic called introductions, I'll never join.
Clubs like that are clubs that initially doubt they'll get members or success and are taking things slow to see how it's gonna turn out. They are just trying to see what happens and I do not like that.
When I started YABC I was going for BIG, so I made topics, lots of 'em. Started book talks and added a book to the bookshelf and got ready. After a week of work and being sure everything was right, I started inviting members.
That's my policy for everything, if you are going to do something, do it or act as if it is already great. Then It'll be great.
Finally Starting:
First thing you want to do when you start is get members. And not just numbers, really the number in a club is relative if no one participates. You can have 3000 members, but if no one discusses then you might as well have 1 member.
So I started inviting all my friends and basically forced my first 100 members to join xD! But like I said, a club with no activity is a dead club and I only had a few people actively participating.
So I thought, what do I need? answer:
Motivation
I saw in a few clubs that they used a points system. so I used the idea here, though I made it my own and it worked! got the members participating!
and the rest is history....
Of course that is not the end but, basically, that's the story. Here are my key points for the club, check them out.
So If you have a club or are thinking about starting one, these are my suggestions:
1.- The most active member of your club is YOU: When your club is new, you need to give it your full attention - I started YABC when I was on vacations - you need to be around all the time and say hi to everyone, welcome everyone and help lead the discussions. Someone says something, you reply and try to keep it going.
2.- Invite People: invite all your friends and encourage people to join, though don't be pushy. If you already invited someone and they declined don't keep sending invites. If they want to join, they'll join. If not. NO. It happened to me and got some reclaims. worst than no members, is angry no-members.
3.- Keep your Group CLEAN: I hate it in other clubs when there are super old topics or things are not in the right folders, it makes it annoying to find anything so, keep an eye on your topic and the more specific your folders, the better.
4.- Clubs are for the MEMBERS: Most clubs are not for the mods, they are for the members. So that they can find a place to share their love for books as much as yours so, FOCUS ON THEM. Make them Happy, Take Interest in them, Listen to their suggestions! their opinions make the club and you, by listening to their comments make the club for THEM
5.- Make a space for Everyone: it doesn't matter if your club is only for readers or YA lovers, make a space for everyone the writers, authors, bloggers, etc. it will get you more members and will encourage them to participate more, and also will help them to promote themselves.
6.- Motivation: just like with the Points system, there are other way to motivate, make writing contest, reading challenges, and lots more. Keep everything moving.
7.- Make it UNIQUE: stalk other clubs and see what they are missing, find a thing that makes your club unique. whether is getting a facebook page or twitter page. Make a Blog. Part of what makes YABC unique its the Button. which really catches the eye and stands out when you search for YA clubs in Goodreads.
8.- The RIGHT name: if your club is about YA books, don't name it "The Talking Sandwich" find an easy title that by its name any member can tell what it is. and also it'll pop out first in the groups search section on Goodreads.
9.- Rules: be clear with your rules and follow them yourself. Respecting your own rules means respecting your Club. so take care of it.
10.- Find MODERATORS: Find people you trust to help with your club. It is not an easy job, having help is always great. And my moderators are part of the reason that YABC is so great
11.- Have FUN!: The reason I created YABC, like I said, was because I wanted a club just like it so that I could enjoy it and that other people could do so as well! If you, as a mod, are not happy with your club, do you think your members are? Of course some days are going to be stressful but, you gotta ask yourself if it's worth it. It's your Club. Enjoy it. and let your Members Enjoy It. Have Fun!
Well, this is all I can think about for now! If you have any questions then just ask and I'll gladly answer them!!!
Oh! and as a side note, I know a lot of you here are not allowed to add unknown friends on Goodreads or stuff and as a mod you sort of need to get social and connect with your members, so you should add everyone that requests you as a friend.
I get 3 friend requests minimum a day. Period. I accept each one of them and gladly have conversations with them. Its part of the job :)
Downside of this: I get creepy messages sometimes... Heather - Mod of YABC - is the head mod of another very successful club here on Goodreads and she has never had a problem with weird messages, but I have, so there is a possibility you are creepy message free. Maybe it's just me O.O
What are creepy messages? well, I once had a guy constantly asking me if I like Erotica and other stuff that is not PG-13... yeah, not so nice. and there once was this girl that was constantly adding me as a friend and sending me daily messages begging me to add her and asking around for me here on the club and other places. This has happened quite often to me, and yes, it creeps me out but it has not been anything serious, and also I do not post any real personal information in my profile, so I'm safe :)
Hope this helps!
