When you are reading a book, what creates the impulse for you to continue reading?
Characters, descriptions...?

The main things that makes me continue reading a a book are the cliffhangers at the end of the chapters!

Maddie | 14 comments I dislike cliffhangers cause I read late at night... And clif hangers make me stay up all night!

haha!! That's when I know a book is awesome: When it makes me stay up at night

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I like books with lots of twists and turns. Cliffhangers are good at the end of a chapter but they really make me mad at the end of the book! :)

message 6: by Sydney (new)

Sydney (sydeli) Interesting characters. If the main character doesn't have something good about their like it isn't worth reading.
Ex for bad
Mr. Gray lives in a normal house. He is very uptight. he is old and not smart...
If the story didn't pick up, i would put it down'

and cliffhangers that make me want more

message 7: by Rea (new)

Rea Characters keep me hooked. If the book is all just descriptions then I lose interest and stop reading. If the book is always changing character then sometimes I'll stop.

But it's not just about the character. It's a mix of character and action.
In Spirit Gate, Kate Elliot spends 2 chapters (approx 50 pages) introducing a character then kills her off. Next 100 pages introducing a new character. Stops. Next 100 pages introducing a new character. Stops. Next 100 pages... you get the idea.
I got bored and stopped reading at character 4 or 5. Every time she'd put a lot of effort into setting the scene, introducing the culture, etc., and then she'd move the action away from it all just as it got interesting. Sorry, but I need action as well as character.

That's true!! I hate when the author just pauses the story to insert a long description!

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 66 comments What keeps me hooked? hmm.... something interesting and entertaining like action or something that happens in every chapter, suspence? unpredictable parts, and yeah.....

message 10: by Jemma *Dollie* (new)

Jemma *Dollie* (dolly_lou) | 11 comments The first thing is the story line, i like books that make you sit and think what will happen next

Then the characters keep me reading, but a good book will complement the writer if the describitons allow you to see what the characters see. ...

true true, if the descriptions and that in the book arent good enough then thats a low down!

message 12: by Jemma *Dollie* (new)

Jemma *Dollie* (dolly_lou) | 11 comments Totally but too much description can also be a down fall too, because you get fed up with hearing about the one thing so discriptons have to be just right

message 13: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 66 comments yep! exactly! hi 5!

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 66 comments thank u!! hearts beating again lol, *heart machine sound*

message 17: by Rea (new)

Rea I agree that there should be a balance of description, but there should also be a balance of thought-description. When the narrator plunges into the head of the character to show the reader what they're thinking. Sometimes this goes all over the damn place and it seems to have no link to what's happening in the novel at the time. Thought diarrhea is not fun to read!

message 20: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andreaorva) A book that keeps me hooked has to have a good pace, cause books that are slow make me wanna sleep. Also, it's good to add a cliffhanger at the end of some chapters to keep the readers intrigued.

I agree. A book should have a lot of cliff hangers and intriguing situation that let the reader not only read but think and analyse with the narrator! About pace, if a book is slow I tend to stop reading even if I'm close to ending it: that's what happened with The Host. BORE ME I stopped around page 300

message 22: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 66 comments really?? the host was boring?? my friend loved it and recommended it for me to read, but i havent yet, so idk

message 23: by Chris (new)

Chris | 257 comments Mod
I didn't like it but my friend did and she keeps begging me to continue it but I keep telling her: The moment's gone and stephanie meyer ruined it! So I don't know for you!

message 24: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 66 comments yeah, we'll c, but i dont plan on readin it anytime soon! I have soo many other books to read b4 it, lol

message 25: by Jemma *Dollie* (new)

Jemma *Dollie* (dolly_lou) | 11 comments I found the host really slow and hard to get into then come to the part where she lives in the caves it picked up and i enjoyed it.... I say don't drop a book if its slow to start give it chance because you never know how it will turn out

I gave it a 300 page chance in a 600 pages novel. I think I gave it enough!

message 28: by Rea (new)

Rea If I'm honest, I gave The Host about 50 pages. By this time I'd realised that Meyer can't write to save her life, though. Within the first few pages she's already got contradicting herself. She says that the alien woman has been many things, like a plant and a bear (I think it was a bear), but then she says that as she possesses a human she feels the sense of... hmm it was either smell or touch, for the first time. So bears can't smell or touch now?

That was the end of that for me.

message 29: by Chris (new)

Chris | 257 comments Mod
Haha!!! I like your critique on books Rea!!! I never semm to notice this stuff it's either I like the book or not!

message 30: by Rea (new)

Rea If I'm enjoying the book then I don't notice the problems as much. If I'm not enjoying the book but forcing myself to read it because I blew a lot of money on it then I get really picky. I really don't like Stephenie Meyer's writing style, so I get even worse when I'm reading something she wrote. (Thankfully I've read all the books by her that I bought and I will never buy another one!)

message 31: by Chris (new)

Chris | 257 comments Mod
Haha! Rea is mad at Stephenie! I hope you don't meet her someday cause that day will surely be her last! :P

message 32: by Rea (new)

Rea Oh man, I am! She's lowered the standard for all YA fiction, that's what annoys me the most. You should have seen me after I finished Breaking Dawn. I was so annoyed by the book that I could barely contain it and kept going off on rants about it.

message 33: by Jemma *Dollie* (new)

Jemma *Dollie* (dolly_lou) | 11 comments Haha my ex refused to take me to the cinema after going three times because in each movie i sat there and complained about it because it was either they missed parts out or they tollay changed the way things were done.... I try not to go when a movie comes out and i have read the book because i plan to complain to the writer as they have the final say
