I haven't rooted mine, because I'm too worried/not tech intelligent/am very clumsy and don't want to void my warranty. The newest update gave me everything I've been wanting on my NC. Now there are apps. There arent very many (<150), and there are some that have a cost, but on the android market are free. Its a good start for the app shop. also, now you can use flash.
...and the biggest thing for me, now you can add side-loaded books to your home screen. So library books, books bought from other sources, etc. You get to see their pretty covers when you turn your NC on!
The 1.2 update is good, adds flash and a few apps (but not many and most are paid - kind of disappointing.) A few improvements to the basic bookreading stuff too. I rooted it with this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showt...
That's not a full root and market doesn't work on it, but Amazon apps does. It lets you have some apps and keep the BN stock stuff. They're working on a new autonooter and say it should be out in a few more days.
I think I will just go with the latest update. I haven't installed it yet. I'm going to wait until they push it out over WiFi and let it auto update. I did think about rooting before, but I changed my mind and will just go stock.
Rooting is for people who like to tinker - not necessarily be productive. The NC with 1.2 gives me a good reader, music, email, web browsing with flash, social networking, podcasts, movies (via files) and games. The only apps that I really use are pulse and springpad. My user experience is great.I am waiting for a few apps and policy changes from hulu and netflix but the same is true of rooted NCs. I tried running honeycomb via mSD but I it is too raw. I am sticking with the update - and happily.
Im just sticking with the current update. I have enough to read at the moment I do like the apps that are free at the moment. I was able to put my schedule into my nook and set reminders so that i knew when to stop reading when i had to be somewhere. That is a really good thing since i can get caught up in a book and lose track of time relatively easy.
I'm now 1.2 rooted with Manual Nooter 4.5.6 and it's pretty much like being autnootered back in 1.1 was. Best of both worlds kind of thing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showt...
Thanks for all the input everyone. So far, I've just stuck with the 1.2 update. When I do have time to tinker, I'd try the rooting. :)
1.2 will give you what you need. I would not root unless you have a want to tinker or play around with the nook as a tablet. Also they have released the Development SDK for a the nook color now too, so developers will be making more apps soon enough. The app store seems to be growing every week.
I am new with the Nook Color, and I recently seen where it updated itself. Am I suppose to update anything on my own? Such as this 1.2?
