Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Ever have one of those days when you wished you'd done just one EENSY teensy little thing differently and in hindsight, once it was done and over, and it couldn't be taken back, you tell yourself "I KNEW I should've..." but you didn't.

Well, that just happened to me. FOUR intensively focused hours and several on and off hours today I worked on a report to be distributed on Tuesday. 10 pages. LOTS of documents opened on my monitor's desktop. Trying to clear off the clutter and close documents that didn't need to be opened and delete unnecessary documents. And in the middle of doing that, I mistook my report for a blank document and hit delete, don't save.

a. I should've titled it and saved it from the start.
b. I should've saved throughout the writing process.
c. I totally knew better than to write a big fat important report without titling or saving it.

It's gone. I have to start over from scratch. I'd say, "FML," but I really wouldn't mean it... I do wanna kick something, though. Keep your loved ones away.

Anyway, I don't remember us having a thread for this sort of post, so I'm creating a new topic to discuss. This would be the place to post it...

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, now I feel better about my shitty day because yours was worse. Yay!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, and sorry. A couple days ago the power went out in the whole building and people came running out of their offices furious because all the computers shut down and they lost whatever they were working on.

The only consolation is, when you do it the second time it's often better and you already have your thoughts in order so it will take a lot less time -- speaking from experience, unfortunately.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Aaaargh, Heidi! :(
I've lost big chunks of documents in the past from not saving enough. Very frustrating!
:::hugs:::

I've learned my lesson the hard way about going off to work without an umbrella, walking out the door of my apartment building and realizing I should probably go back and get it, knowing better but not wanting to take two minutes and go back for it.
And then getting absolutely poured on later.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Okie dokie, I'm over it. Early start tomorrow, hyperfocus... I'm bound to make a dent.

I've vented. AND on the bright side, now you all have a place to vent when you have an "I KNEW better than that" moment of your own.

Plus, tomorrow's FRIDAY! :)

Pat (patb37) You guys know about the autosave feature in most word processing programs, right?

I didn't, but I sure learned about it today while on the phone with the tech guy for a half hour.

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.

Mary (merrussell) Bummer! I can so relate-I have done the same and the hard part is-you spend all this time...for naught.
I once faxed a document to a whole slew of people when I accidentally hit the wrong button-I was mortified-it went to all the school superintendents (14) in our area who I had been working hard to impress.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 708 comments Damn! I hate when that happens.
