Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments THE HOST by Stephanie Meyer.

SOOO hard to get into, but once I hit pg. 75 it was ON! I'm loving it now.

message 4402: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Thanks, Heather!! I told the girl I borrowed it from I wanted to quit. She wouldn't let me! :)

message 4403: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments thanks new friend!

message 4404: by Mandy (last edited Oct 20, 2008 07:12PM) (new)

Mandy Hey, Carrie, where have you been?? Haven't seen you around here for ages!! Hope all is well and look forward to hearing about what you're reading.

message 4405: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Lol...Bird shit! My thoughts exactly! I agree 100% with you Lori. The purpose of any group is to get to know one another and share book recommendations, not to join group after group and recommend your OWN book. Half of them do not even check back in to see or defend themselves. They just continue to post the same thread on every group they join... bird shit!

message 4406: by Cassidy (new)

Cassidy Savage (savagegy6) I really liked the book and I'm recommending it. A fellow member read it and then told me about it, I'm passing on the news of a "goodread". I wasn't looking to hear about the drama of the group. Sorry.

message 4407: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Hey Mandy!!!! School has been kicking my butt. I've been teaching and grading and lalalala....

How are you??

message 4408: by Heather (new)

Heather I just finished Dean Koontz'a Frankenstein. I highly recommend it to the Koontz fans here and to those who've read Shelley's Frankenstein. I love the Greek myth references and there was even a character named Jonathan Harker (for those of you reading Dracula).

I thought the Historian was great too. I little slow in parts, but it kept me interested throughout.

message 4409: by Mandy (last edited Oct 20, 2008 07:28PM) (new)

Mandy Carrie, sounds like fun - NOT! Yeah, I'm good thanks, at the moment am tackling The Stand by Stephen King and loving it.

message 4410: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Awesome! I love King....

message 4411: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) LOL...Lori!

Cassidy, sorry if you got offended by my comments. At no point in time did I think I was being negative. I was expressing my opinion of the impression she gave the group with her eloquent and detailed self-promotion, which quite frankly smelled like bad SPAM not only to me, but to some of the other group members. Unfortunately, her post was deleted so you can't go back and read it. I must say it was one of the more entertaining ones. I'm not taking away her abilities as a writer. She has good reviews on GR, however the one-post-and-I'm-out deal is not cool. I'm glad you enjoyed her book. Personally, I'm not into the genre so I don't think I will be picking up her book anytime soon.

Cassidy, I see you have created a group just to talk about Sydney and her novel... and that you also semi bashed my group ( without naming it )... wow. Not cool in my book.

We werent "jumping" you or the fact that you liked the book, we were just informing you on the authors bad taste and self serving purpose... that was all.

For those of you who might be interested in checking her group out, here you go... Im linking it to the page where she mentions us http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

message 4414: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Donna, I think you will find this book every bit as dark and scary as the ones his father has written. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

message 4415: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Angela, I have read Night at least twice. Most recently in the last few months. It is such a haunting book that it can (and should) be read once every few years.

message 4416: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Jill, So far the ghost is pretty darn scarey!!!

Linda, it does seem dark and I haven't read something like this in some time so it is a "nice" change. But so far good.

I also didn't know that Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King. It all makes sense.

message 4417: by alicia (last edited Oct 21, 2008 07:55AM) (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) Cassidy I loved The Historian. It was the first book that had history in it that I truely enjoyed.Plus a vampire theme how could I go wrong.
Ashley I just finished Dead Until Dark a couple of books ago and loved it.I will be picking up the 2nd book in the series tomorrow.I also love the show based on the books on HBO.

the last couple of books have been so-so and some i didn't even finish.Looks like i'm in a slump.I just stared Gossamer Hall last night and i think that will be a good one.(keeping my fingers crossed)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Lori, Weird.... To start a discussion about another group. I don't get it.

message 4419: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle I started reading Charlaine Harris vampire series recommended by a co worker who loved them! So far they are easy to get through and quite entertaining.

message 4420: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I read the Historian and it took me sometime to finish it but in the end Ireally did enjoy it (I brought the book along with me to Las Vegas)

message 4421: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments Rachelle-That is what I am reading. I will probably be out buying # 2 tomorrow.

message 4422: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I just finished Thinner, Blonder, Whiter: A Novel it was very good not what I thought it would be but good...I'll be reading Geraldine Brooks' March next.

message 4423: by Katie (new)

Katie (rhondakate) I just started Bessie Yellowhair by Grace Halsell. It doesn't seem that impressive yet but I'll give it a try.

message 4424: by Cassidy (new)

Cassidy Savage (savagegy6) Ok Lori I'm kinda done talking about this, really silly. Maybe she didn't post again because she was bombarded with negative comments back to her. I don't know and it has nothing to do with me.
But thank you for giving my group the shout out.

Ok back to the topic at hand!
Heather and Alicia - I've liked The Historian so far. It's amazingly well written and feels like a classic, but...it takes forever to get through! (like Donna mentioned) lol
I've read two other books while reading this one the last couple weeks...I've heard that once you hit pg 500 it really picks up and that the ending is great. Do you agree with that?

message 4425: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Amazing book! A must read!

Cassidy, anything to help support a fellow goodreader.....

message 4427: by Brooklyn (new)

Brooklyn (Brooklyn134) | 2 comments I am on the last book of the Sookie Stackhouse series, by Charlaine Harris.
I am hopelessly addicted, best books I have read in years.
Dead until Dark is the first one.
I am waiting for the last one to come in to library.

message 4428: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Brooklyn, it's good to hear that the rest of the series is as good as the beginning. I just finished off Club Dead and am patiently eagerly waiting to dive into the 4th book.

message 4429: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Finished Beautiful Boy (a father's memoir about his son's meth addiction), Downtown Owl (novel about a small town in North Dakota), and Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse (novel in which I am sure the title speaks for itself). All good books.

I just started 99 Coffins by David Wellington (the sequel to 13 Bullets) - so far so good.

message 4430: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I just finished Smashed, Squashed,... by Lance Carbuncle and it was very different from most of my reads but I luaughed and made weird faces the whole time. I only recommend people to read this book if you have a good sense of huor and a good stomach!

message 4431: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Tiffany, I happened to pick this one up by accident (just looked sort of interesting) and am soooooooooo glad I did. I loved it and could not put it down. It's really too bad (I mean this in the nicest way) when books are so engrossing that you can't put them down. It makes the goodness go too fast.

message 4432: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Hi Linda. I seem to remember reading on the jacket that he has written other books as well. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on them!

It truly is an amazing book.

message 4433: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 157 comments I ALMOST had to read Moby Dick as a summer read in HS. That was on our summer reading list in Senior year. Fortunately, we moved during that summer. YAY ME!! I can just imagine what the test would've been like on that book. UGH!!
Anyway, I started reading The Book Club by Mary Alice Monroe. Her other books are very good so I imagine this one will be too.

message 4434: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Some of you mentioned Night...my daughter is in 9th grade and it is required reading this year. We own it and she's already read it...I havent yet though. She really liked it, but said it was very sad.

message 4435: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry guys, I'm hopelessly behind on the threads here. Still catching up.

I tried THE HOBBIT and LOTR a few years ago when the movies were out and I couldn't get into either one. I still have them on the shelf and maybe I'll give them a try next year.

I think it was Scott who suggested sticking with A TALE OF TWO CITIES. He's right; after you get into the story, it soars. I know it's considered one of Dickens' worst novels but I loved it. The ending is greatness.

message 4436: by [deleted user] (new)

Still reading DRACULA...It may never end.

message 4437: by Leila (last edited Oct 22, 2008 08:01AM) (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) Jesse - It took me about three or four times until I got into LoTR. I remember the first time I saw the trailer for FoTR in the theater and I was thinking "geeeze, that looks scary, I don't want to see that". Strangely enough, next thing I know, I'm trying to read the books before the movie came out. I had to read the first four chapters several times until I could get past it and finish the wonderful series and then fall in love with the movies...

message 4438: by [deleted user] (new)

Leila, I'm going to give them another try at some point. They are beloved for a reason.

message 4439: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Just finished EMPIRE FALLS and I really liked it. Now I am starting MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA by Arthur Golden. I can't wait to get into it. I am then going to rent the movie.

message 4440: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I've heard very good things about "The Art of Racing in the Rain". I've had the audio on hold at the library for months now and I'm still 2 on the quere! Oh well, the librarians have assured me it's moving so we'll see. I may have to give up and buy the book! LOL

message 4441: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Ann, I hope you enjoy Memoirs of a Geisha as much as I did. It's one of my favorites. The movie was just as good as the book.

message 4442: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Yeah me too! I read it in about 2 sittings and when I got near the end I had to slow down because I didn't want it to end. Golden's descriptions are beautiful and I was glad that the movie was able to capture it.

message 4443: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) OMG Jesse, yes. I will try A Tale of Two Cities if you'll try LotR???

:)

message 4444: by Jackie (last edited Oct 22, 2008 11:16AM) (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) OOhhh Heather, The Red Tent is another one of my favs! You won't be disappointed!

I checked GR and he has written a book called Swann. Here's the link: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29...

I guess I have another one to add to my TBR list.

message 4445: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I have said this before... I loved THE RED TENT!! And I am loving MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA. I did not want to put it down to go pick up the kids from school!!!

message 4446: by [deleted user] (new)

Laura, you got a deal. However, I won't be able to start on it til early next year.

message 4447: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Well, since there are four books in all, including the Hobbit, you'll have to assign me three others.

I'm ready!

message 4448: by Emma (last edited Oct 22, 2008 12:42PM) (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments LOL, Laura, you're promoting The Hobbit!

I'm such a bad example. :D

I'm going to read it soon, I promise!

message 4449: by [deleted user] (new)

Fair enough...LOL...I'll have to think of three of my favorites for you.

message 4450: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) LOL GEmma & Jesse - Guess this means I have to read all of them again - it was middle school, it's been awhile
