ScottK | 535 comments Jill I plan on tackling The Rose next year, let me know what you think.

SBG it's ok I am sooooooo not overly sensitive about my age , unless it can make a good joke.

message 4352: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 18, 2008 08:27PM) (new)

I'm now reading a promising book. "The Story of India" by Michael Wood.

message 4353: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments I have just finished Eat Pray Love which I was undecided about at the beginning but ended up enjoying. Am about half way through The House Gun. It's actually been a quick read and am also enjoying it although alot of readers say it is too depressing.

message 4354: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I loved LOTR. I read them about five years ago and was completely absorbed by it. Didn't read The hobbit yet.

message 4355: by Liz M (new)

Liz M I started reading Bartleby & Co. yesterday. Very slow going. It's a novel that reads like non-fiction. Interesting concept, but the lack of plot is difficult for me.

message 4356: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I read Night by Elie Wiesel last night. I would really recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it. It's a true story about when the author was 15 and in concentration camps in Europe. Really sad but powerful book.

message 4357: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Oh, and now I'm starting The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill. I think that in the States it has been published as Someone Knows My Name.

message 4358: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I just started Sophie's Choice, which is going to take me awhile because of the length of the book and the small print. It is a difficult read because I feel like I need a dictionary next to me while I am reading it. I am intrigued so far...

message 4359: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I've started Interview with the Vampire, and I love it so far!

message 4360: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments I have not been reading in forever! Geeze! IHomecoming is finally over, so hopefully, things are going to go smoother now, and I will get to read more. I'm almost done Alice at Heart, but I have barely started Dracula. So we shall see how things work out.

message 4361: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Angela.
Sophie's Choice is on my wishlist. Let me know how you like it and if it should stay.

I just finished "Landing It: My Life On and Off the Ice" by Scott Hamilton. It was OK.
I'm going to start Southern Fatality: A Jersey Barnes Mystery by T. Lynn Ocean
I heard it is along the same lines of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.
Has anyone read it?

message 4362: by Lil (new)

Lil | 9 comments I'm reading Duma Key by Stephen King. Pretty good!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I love Dickens, but to be fair, I have to say that A Tale of Two Cities is my least favorite of his novels that I've read. Still good, though.

Right now I'm re-reading Dissolution by C. J. Sansom, which is as good as I remember it.

message 4364: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments Tara, I also read The Emperor's Children earlier this year. I didn't see what the hype was about either. It was OK, but not something I would go around recommending to people.

Right now, I am reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. It's another one that I have heard highly recommended for reasons I don't yet understand. I just over half way, so maybe the end is the draw??

message 4365: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Tara - hot pins in the eyes also works.

Gemma - cleaning all done? (wish mine was)

message 4366: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Finally finished Dracula(that took waaay to long for what was a relatively short book!)So I'm on to House of Leaves as well as reading How To Read A Novel Like A Professor (excellent BTW)
and I think I may start one of my new books I picked up today,Gluten-Free Girl. She has a wonderful way of articulating her love of food as well as her love for writing.

message 4367: by Coalbanks (new)

Coalbanks | 186 comments Tolstoy short stories from the Caucasus in an edition of Russian writers including Turgenev - Father's & Sons, &, Dostoyevsky - Crime & Punishment. Not a short read but a good one.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Melody..I'm glad that you loved Eat, Pray, Love..i'm getting ready to start it soon and I love when i hear good reviews of it!!

message 4369: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Jamie, I really liked Eat, Pray, Love, just felt at peace whilst I was reading it. Hope you like it.

message 4370: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I am reading House of Blood by Bryan Smith. Not a bad read so far i think it will be move quickly.

message 4371: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Laura, I can't quite find the words for describing the greatness of Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, but this review does a pretty adequate job of it.

message 4372: by Will (new)

Will Byrnes I had a similar experience, reading The Hobbit as a teen, (many years ago) but not being able to get through the LOTR series on the first try. A few years made a difference. When I got around to a second try, in my 20's I think, it was true love. I have read the series several times, including out loud to my children. Sometimes, one's appreciation of a work of art is a factor of time as well as the piece itself. Wait a few years, then give it another go. You may have a different reaction, as you will be a different person. Real classics deserve a second look.

message 4373: by Becky (new)

Becky (rsnm) I read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings when I was 10. It took me a while to get into the Hobbit but I enjoyed it, and I loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy but it took me ages to get through the battle sequences and I skipped through some of the Elvish songs etc. I'm planning on reading the English version in the near future (the one I read back then was the german translation). It's ready on my bookshelf but atm I'm reading Peter Pan and I'm finding the writing style quite good. I'm also about 150 pages into Die erste Leiche vergisst man nicht. It's a german book that is a collection of real stories told by police officers which is slightly disturbing but really interesting. Oh and I finished Brisingr and pretty much gave much on finishing Dracula for now.

message 4374: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I know I am a little late but I too saw Blindness and thought it followed fairly well. It is funny when an author really doesn't really give a detail description of people or places and yet it was perfect!

Also as my follow up with Lori about Smashed, I felt the same way. If he can introduce a book like that then I am sold!!!

message 4375: by Elena (last edited Oct 20, 2008 07:54AM) (new)

Elena | 45 comments I'm finding myself with two books on my bedside table. One is "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi, I'm reading it quite slowly because, I couldn't tell why, it's not so interesting for me now. The other is a controversial Italian novel, "Il Male oscuro" (in English "Incubus") by Giuseppe Berto, which is a hard, but fascinating reading: the semi-autobiographical story of how a man sinks into a depression and tries to escape from it, analysing why and how he began to suffer.

message 4376: by Allison (new)

Allison i'm now starting the red leather diary.
so far, so good!

message 4377: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 48 comments I would give it another try. You really have nothing to lose. I loved it.

message 4378: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 48 comments I am so with you, big ouch!

Regardless, whenever one may have seen this "old movie";) I absolutely agree it doesn't do justice to the book.

message 4379: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Well, I finished all the various books that were plaguing me over the weekend and have decided to start in on Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart.

message 4380: by Cassidy (new)

Cassidy Savage (savagegy6) I just finished Haunted Lily but Sidney Fox. AMAZING, I highly recommend it and will definitively get you in the Halloween mood. If you like a creepy, thrill read this will make your day! I loved it so much and can not wait for the next in the series to be released. Look for Enchanted Shadow soon too! For having such serious content she was able to keep you lighthearted and excited to read on. She has a great style of writing that was fun, entertaining and spooky. I sat for four hours straight and could not go to bed until I finished it. Anyone else read this yet?

message 4381: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Sidney Fox is actually one of the members in our Spammers Circle of Hell!! Here at TNNBC, we do not take kindly to spammers :)

message 4382: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) LOL...I knew that name sounded familiar!! It was the Booooo Lady! LOL.

message 4383: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments YEP!!! LOL...

message 4384: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments I just started Dead util Dark by Charlaine Harris. So far so good. I am only on page 20. I want to read it so I can watch the show. I bought it at Target.

message 4385: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) It's a shame that she self promoted on here because not many people (well...I should speak for myself) have a hard time taking her seriously now and she's probably not a bad writer.

message 4386: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I just finished A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny. I really enjoyed it. I'm still reading House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I am about to start Holes by Louis Zachar.

message 4387: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I just noticed that her(Sidney Fox) thread is gone from the Spammers Circle of Hell... she must have removed it.

message 4388: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Operandi, I read Holes a couple of years back because my niece was raving about it. It was an unexpectedly good book. The movie was pretty good too.

Booooo...Sidney Fox is no fun! LOL.

message 4389: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Jessica, I'm reading Tale of Two Cities as well. It took me about 50 or so pages to really get into it. But I'm really into it now.

I'm also still in the midst of Anna Karenina. I really feel like I'm going to finish it this time. I feel like I'm on a roll with it again. It seems like it's one of those books where it takes some getting into, but once I'm on a roll, I can't stop. It's definitely rewarding and I'm excited to see it through to the end. That being said, I've got quite a ways to go!

message 4390: by Cassidy (new)

Cassidy Savage (savagegy6) What are you talking about! Have you even read the book? It was great! Oh I loved it soooo much, creepy and still fun! She's a great author, my friend Jason suggested it to me. I think it's more a shame people feel the need to be sooo negative. Stop taking yourself and this silly site so seriously. Just read good books and enjoy. The internet isn't a free pass to be ugly. Give her book a try at least, it really got me in the Halloween spirit. I'm sooo excited for Halloween, fall is my favorite season!

Anyway...I'm also reading The Historian which is a beautifully written book! Is that her first book? I guess I can go look that up...lol which I will. If it's not, has anyone read anything else by her?

message 4391: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) Still on Dreamcatcher.

Also reading "The Complete Stephen King Universe", the updated version with The Tower series. Someone here recommended the book, and I'm enjoying it. Gets you into the mind and worlds of King. I have to say, he thinks differently than the rest of us.

message 4392: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I'm still on Like Water for Chocolate and What's a Ghoul to Do? -- I should be able to get Like Water for Chocolate done soon.

message 4393: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Now I am reading Heart Shaped box by Joe Hill

message 4394: by Angela (new)

Angela | 64 comments Allison- I read Night by Elie Wiesel as a high school student. I plan on reading it again soon. To all that are reading or planning on reading Sophie's Choice, I would highly recommend it. The story is so powerful that it will leave you breathless.

message 4395: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Anna Karenina - that's another one I gave up on early on. All the Russian names kept throwing me (I know, I'm weird). Plus, it just seemed like it wasn't picking up. But being another one of those books I was supposed to read in H.S., I should prob. give it another try.

message 4396: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10625 comments Mod
Cassidy... I dont think we are being cruel about the Fox Spammer... she failed to follow the simple guidelines I put in place for the group... to keep harrassers and shameless self promoters from abusing my forum..

If she had just taken time to get to know the group, we would have loved to give her a chance... but she was a serial self promoter... just posted her speil on tons of other goodreads forums.... and vanished.

Its kinda like bird shit. No matter where I park my car, it still seems to get splattered!! How weird.....

message 4397: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Angela, Yeah some friends of mine mentioned recently that they read Night in high school too. Maybe it's becoming mandatory reading? That's cool that you're going to read it again soon. It's definitely one I could read again (even though it's really sad, the message is so important). I will have to look up Sophie's Choice, it sounds great!

message 4398: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Donna, I hope you enjoy Heart-Shaped Box. The ghost is definitely one you want to stay away from.

message 4399: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments JT, I'm not very far in yet. I'm on chapter 4, The Shoemaker. I'm enjoying it thus far and I like that everyone says that it picks up.

message 4400: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Logan.
