message 4101: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I've started reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I've heard way too much about it and how it is such a 'must-read classic' so I figured it is about time. So far, I like it. I feel so bad for Jane. I am though unfortunately reading it translated to Swedish because I need to practise the language for an upcoming test. I never liked reading English classics translated but ah well...I am enjoying it so far and that's the point :)

message 4102: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Ack, I'm STILL reading Dracula and I'm almost torturing myself. I'm not even halfway through, but it's impossible to stop.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Leila..I feel like I should be reading that too because its a classic...let me know how you like it.

I'm currently reading The October Country by Ray Bradbury.

message 4104: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Dorie.
I've loved every Elvis book I've read.
Looking forward to read a mystery/thriller.

message 4105: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) You are in good company (G)emma...I'm still reading Dracula too. I got quite a bit of reading done today and I plan on reading before I go to bed, but I still have a ways to go before finishing.

message 4106: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments What do you think of it so far? Where are you in the book?

message 4107: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I'm in the beginning of chapter 8. Mina and Lucy's letters are dragging me down so I tend to skim a bit during these sections.

message 4108: by Rose Ann (last edited Oct 11, 2008 05:48PM) (new)

Rose Ann I was reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, up until 2 weeks ago (had brain surgery Oct. 1st)...I'm hoping to pick it back up in a week or two, when I recover a bit more.

I also got a gift card to Borders while recovering!!! I'm so excited I dont know what to buy...LOL
No rush on that though...I cant drive for another month!

message 4109: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Okay, I'm taking a breather from Dracula for at least the weekend. I'm figuring, if I finish it before the end of the month, great; if not, who cares? So, I went to the library and picked up the books I put on hold, then also grabbed The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker (found out she's from MD, COOL!). If I'm lucky, I'll be able to finish it tonight.

message 4110: by Darlene621 (new)

Darlene621 | 4 comments Just joined this website and saw your group. Looks like fun. I'm reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton. I like it so far, sort of an Upstairs/Downstairs with a mystery.

message 4111: by Heather (new)

Heather Welcome Darlene621! I think you'll like it here.

I just finished Who the Hell is Pansy O'Hara? and I really enjoyed it. I'm having trouble deciding what to read next. Too many choices. Maybe another glass of wine will help me decide.

message 4112: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Wow Rose Ann! I hope it wasn't as scary as it sounds. Hope all is well and you have a speedy recovery.(Especially with a Borders gift card waiting in the wings!)

Hi Darlene621. Love your avi pic!

Killer Weekend by Ridley Pearson

message 4115: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Leila, I read Jane Eyre years ago and though I don't remember why, I do remember that I liked it.

I also read most of the classics because I feel like I once should read them...

Enjoy and good luck with the test.

Julianne | 314 comments Jean, bnoir:

I read Jane Eyre in Sept. And I have given myself the goal to read one "classic" a month from here out, to catch up on all my "missed" reading.

I am currently reading Curse of the Spellmans: A Novel.

message 4118: by Karenh (new)

Karenh | 1 comments I have just finished reading Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. What a great book everyone should read this!!!

message 4119: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books of all time. I read it for AP English in High School and it was my top book until I read the Outlander series...but it's still my favorite Classic.

message 4120: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I just finished The 42 parallel by John Dos Passos and I liked it. It became a bit confusing because of all the seperate stories suddenly, which where all nice on there own. But in the end they all started to have a link with each other.

Later I am going to start Kim by Kipling. Th only reason why I picked up the book is because of the fall challenge! Hope I like the book as only the name of the author I have heard before but don't know if I like what he reads.

The 42nd Parallel
Kim

message 4121: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hi Rose Ann - I hope you are doing okay and looking forward to spending that gift card soon.

(I'm still reading about Gemma Doyle, but I gotta give Gemma the Gemu credit, A Great and Terrible Beauty is worth the read indeed!)

message 4122: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Rose Ann, I missed you! I hope you are feeling better.

message 4123: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments I just started Anybody Out There? by Marian Keyes.

This is my first Marian Keyes book so I am excited because I have heard such great things about her books.

message 4124: by Marsha (new)

Marsha I'm a big fan of Jane Eyre myself. I've always been a sucker for the poor, intelligent, decent gal makes good with the happy ending plot.

I'm still trudging through Atonement. I am finally to the point where McEwan abandons the chapter structure and there is only Part Two and Part Three left. I am continuing to read for a couple of reasons.

The psychological complexity and the fullness (and exceedingly flawed nature of) his characters rings very true to me. His characters are multilayered and real.

The other reason is that I do want to continue reading McEwan's books and I'd like to be able to make comparisons.

But the language here is just tedious. One can open the book to any page and find an example. It's exhausting to read and detracts from the story. On the other hand, On Chesil Beach I found perfect- as if the language fitted the story and was just enough to make me feel challenged without overdoing. Arrgh!

message 4125: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Oh Marsha,I'm sorry to hear that! I loved McEwan's Atonement (but I feel very much as though i'm in the minority!)

Ashley, Is anybody Out there is my all time fave of hers.Hope you enjoy it!

message 4126: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Fiona, that's so true! One either loves him or hates him,it seems. Glad to not be alone with my Atonement love though. :)

message 4127: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I just finished When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was very good. I'm starting Frankenstein today.

message 4128: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I had to put down THE BELL JAR until tomorrow. SUNDAYS AT TIFFANYS by James Patterson needs to be read and retured to the library by Tuesday, so I am reading that 1st.

I read ATTONEMENT a few months ago, and it took a bit to get into. But I liked it.

message 4129: by Tisha (last edited Oct 12, 2008 03:12PM) (new)

Tisha I just finished Without Reservations and quite enjoyed it. I hope to be a traveler like her. She travels with the intent of getting to know the city, not have a set plan, and just be there. She has such a way of observing the details of a city, while still seeing all the sites and meeting new people.

I am now moving on to A Dirty Job. This is my first Christopher Moore book, but I continuously hear how funny his books are so I can't wait to dive into his collection.

message 4130: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) OMG Tisha, that is so weird! I just finished
(G)Emma's recommendation - A Great & Terrible Beauty (which was good), and I'm also moving on to A Dirty Job. I need a good laugh!

Looking forward to it.

message 4131: by Jenna (new)

Jenna (backwoodsbabble) | 52 comments I just started Shantaram and its killing my homework time... I am about a 100 pages in and I just want to stop what I am doing right now, avoid work and keep reading. I did not expect that I would be as intrigued by the story or that the writing would be so good. I don't know that it is going to be something that will appeal to a wide audience, though I have seen a lot of talk about it on goodreads, it's a little rough for those who are a bit on the squeamish side, but that is what fascinates me most.

JG (Introverted Reader) I'm reading Deception Point by Dan Brown. I haven't been quite as sucked into it as I was with the da Vinci Code, but it's decent so far. My brother-in-law has been recommending it to me for over a year now. My father-in-law is reading it currently also.

message 4133: by Heather (new)

Heather Last night I was debating between starting House of Leaves or East of Eden. After a glass of wine, naturally I started Koontz's Frankenstein: Prodigal Son. So far I'm really enjoying the references to Greek mythology. However, it will be House of Leaves after Koontz.

message 4134: by Marsha (new)

Marsha Okay- there is actually a very different tone in Part Two of Atonement that I'm liking very much. I plowed though 75 pages this afternoon and I'd been pushing myself to finish 5 pages in the first half of the book.

message 4135: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Marsha, I have to say that I agree, when you get to part two, you're actually able to pick up the pace. I still didn't like the book, though.

message 4136: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments I've also started reading a collection of short stories by mary shelley.

its in portuguease and its weird bacause of that, I'm so used to reading in english, and most of the classics i've read are in english. its weird to read a translation.

anyway i didnt knew that imortality was a recorent theme in shelley's works. its interesting to discover that.

message 4137: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I spendt a lazy Sunday reading and i finished SUNDAYS AT TIFFANYS by James Patterson. Light and fluffy. Now onto THE BELL JAR.

message 4138: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 48 comments Thanks, just finished it this weekend. It definitely held up through the end. Makes it onto my list of favorite books of all time.

message 4139: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 48 comments Lessing actually says she didn't intend for it to be feminist literature, so don't be scared :) I read it and really enjoyed it. I'm a big Lessing fan myself.

message 4140: by Marsha (new)

Marsha I think Atonement will remain one of those books that takes me forever to finish. I started A Thousand Splendid Suns for my IRL book club last night and I'm trying to snatch two minutes to keep reading already.

I have a feeling I'm really going to like this book.

message 4141: by Cynthia (last edited Oct 13, 2008 07:13AM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Just finished reading The Heretic Queen: A Novel...it was fantastic. I loved her other book Nefertiti and this was just as good if not better than that one. If you love historical fiction like I do this is a must read. Michelle Moran is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Next up for me is Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World.

message 4142: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I have just started House of Leaves finally.

message 4143: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Finished Dracula...read Candide (which I really liked) and have now started Tale of Two Cities. I have avoided Dickens until now and am pleasantly surprised, as I am really enjoying the book so far.

I was told that his wit and humor was a little hard to pick up in this one, but I feel like I am getting it. Or I am simply giggling at the wrong parts!

message 4144: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments Heather- I am the same way. I go to read and come back and feel like I missed so much.

Sherry- I didn't get to read to much of Anybody Out There, but the 30 pages I did I can already tell you that I am going to like it.

message 4145: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I finished reading The Frog Princess this morning and am hoping to finish up Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time today as well. After that, I'm moving on to What's a Ghoul to Do?

message 4146: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I am still plugging away at Dreams From My Father, which I am enjoying. I hope to finish it today and will be moving on to the Bell Jar.

message 4147: by Stef (new)

Stef (buch_ratte) | 650 comments Yesterday I started with Ex Libri - Confessions Of A Common Reader by Ann Fadiman.
I read the first five chapters and I have to say I really like the book. It is very different from what I usually read but that doesn't matter.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Melissa--I just bought Love is a mix tape. How is it??

Angela--The Bell Jar is amazing :)

message 4149: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments Hey Kristie, I see that you just finished The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. I loved her book, A Thread of Grace. Have you read it? I will have to take a look at The Sparrow now. Thanks.

message 4150: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Jamie- I cannot wait to start it! I have heard mixed reviews, so I am anxious to find out for myself.
