What are you reading?
Speaking of bad books… I haven't completely given up on The Historian yet, but I'm putting it on the back burner while I read, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. It's been a while since I've got my hands on some fiction so I am just aching for something to get totally immersed in.
Emma, I feel your pain. This year has been such a bonanza of fiction that I'd forgotten how much longer it takes me to read non-fiction. This has left me reading Nemesis The Last Days of the American Republic American Empire Project|64711] for the past four days and will likely consume most of the weekend too. I think I'll definitely need a light quick read after this, though I really want to dive into Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism prior to election day. What can I say? I'm a nerd.
Hehehe, we all are Logan. Okay, the book is right beside me. But.........I'm on Goodreads and a lot of people are on and.........I have no disipline. But the book is really good!!! Ack.
Well I did an about face today and rather than continue on with Dracula(not in the mood yet)I started Cannery Row which I'm loving. The characters are wonderful(I have a soft spot for Mack)
Well, it does seem kind of early.....you have to wait for all the Halloween merchandise to come into the stores and the candy addiction to begin. :D
1/3 through The Hotel New Hampshire. While I can't say it is my favorite, there is just something about Irving that grips me every single time. I'm looking forward to a weekend of rainy weather!
Awesome! I love it when the air becomes cold and crisp. The leaves start to fall, the scenery is gorgeous. And it's a perfect time to read outside! I have a reading table and I can't wait to go outside with my cozy sweater and read.
This time of the year IS perfect. With the exception of figuring out when to turn the heat on and having to rake 40 bags of leaves.
Oh right. BUT, you can just put on a sweater instead of cranking the heat. But the raking.....I guess we'll all just have to deal with the labor. :P
Emma - If it was just me, yeah I could leave the heat off forever, but I have a soft heart when the kids teeth start chattering.
Ken - I do plan on seeing the movie as soon as I find a place that has it or join Netflix again. All signs point to a washout this weekend. The tee time has officially been cancelled.

Empire of the Sun. Oh wow it's good. I loved the movie but the book puts the movie to shame. Great REad!
Emma: I, too, love fall reading. Outside at the park, or inside by the fire wrapped in a blanket with my two cats. Autumn is beautiful here in the Great Northwest. Where in Canada are you from?
Oops, yeah. After I posted I thought that was kinda personal for me to ask. I completely understand. Sorry if that was a bit forward of me.
It's alright, I'm just happy you understand. Sometimes people will ask me and say "Why?" And then I start feeling unconfortable. I CAN tell you I was born in Vancover though. A rain lover at heart. :)
Yesterday afternoon, I picked up Out of Sync by Lance Bass from the library and finished it this morning. This afternoon, I finally received my copy of Love is a Mix Tape so I've started that. I'm out of my reading rut a bit -- I just need to try reading some shorter books for a while instead of tackling so many of the longer books I have on my to-read shelf.
We've got not only Halloween but Christmas decorations in all the stores around me...is it just me or does it seem that every year the christmas decorations hit the stores sooner and sooner...pretty soon you won't know what holiday it is because they will all be out at the same time.
Emma: I was wondering about Vancouver (that's why I'd asked). Such a beautiful city. It is only a few hours from here so I have been many times. I love the rain as well. I used to think it was just b/c it gave me a chance to stay indoors and read. For some reason sunny days (maybe b/c they are so rare) make me feel like I'm supposed to get out and DO something. But, nah, it isn't just that; I just really love the rain.
Fiona - Let me know what you think of it, that's been on my to read list for agesCynthia- It's true christmas keeps coming earlier, I used to be annoyed when they had all the stuff up for sale right after Halloween but even that is still a month away. I wonder when they'll start selling easter eggs, maybe next month?
My mum actually found my version of Dracula where I thought it was (at their house in my old room behind the bed under some boxes and between well a lot of other books). So I'm a few pages into that as well as Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey which I mentioned before and I picked up a copy of Brisingr at the train station today, more because my sister wanted a copy than anything but I guess I'll be reading that sometime within the next week as well.
Hi all. Looks like many of you are reading Dracula with Halloween coming up...I'm currently reading the 'ole two books, depending on which room I'm in: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, which makes me long for my childhood when we always had a dog (I miss Mitzi the most...) My other book is Democracy in America by de Toqueville. That one makes me long for an America that is long past.
Just finished One More Timeby Carol Burnett
I liked it. She is a great lady. This was about her life. From her childhood to her big break on Broadway and TV.
Going to start Things Fall Apart
It's a bookclub book.
Kellie - I read Things Apart in my senior year and found it was very well written, although it took me a while to get used to the names. Hope you enjoy it!
Connie: It really does make you appreciative of sunny days, but the rain is the best part. I think my favorite way to go asleep is with the rain pitter-pattering on my window. It really is the gorgeous, and plenty of Starbucks. :)
mmm...starbucks, rain and a good book...I love it. It's been really sunny here in CO. I wish it would rain for a few days. :~)
I never read 2 books @ a time but I am in New York for the weekend and my friend and I started reading Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist in the car on the way here. Its good so far...I am enjoying it. Hopefully we will finish it on the way home.
I wish I could use the library... I am visiting the UK. I so need to go into town and get some books!!! I am reading Jacob's Ladder. It was not quite what I thought it would be. I thought I would learn a lot about DNA, physical make up, something. I am just in the beginning and well if i had another book I would read it. I think I am going to try to go to WHSmiths in the next few days, I need a good book now! KB
I finished Cannery Row this morning and I expect to be finished Watchmen tomorrow. And then I have no idea what I'll read next, but I'll have fun trying to figure it out!
Still treking through the Erye Affair and the Omnivore's Dilemma. Also started The Inheritance of Loss for my book club. I haven't had much time to read lately and it is making me quite sad.
Yay thanks Ann , I just checked out David Maine's Blog I think He may be here on Maui right now , at least he was a month or so ago. If he still is I may ask him to sign my Book !!!!
That is so neat! I also have to read bt him THE PRESERVATIONIST and MONTER 1959 ( which i thought my dog had chewed up, but I found this morning!!lol) I love when I find a new author i like. If you see him , tell him i said hello from SC!!!
I already pulled it out and started Scott (only first page though) :)That would be so cool to have your book signed Scott.Hope he's still there.Lori's experience was that he was pretty decent guy and generous to her with his time.
Oh, OK I will start tonight then. I forgot all about Lori meeting him. His Blog has some great Sea Turtle shots.
Yeah, Scott, if you see him, make sure you tell him Hi from Me, and that I am spreading my love of his novels all over goodreads...... would ya???
Ann, so happy you loved his book! Monster and Preservationist are great too.....
Yeah for Maine!!!

Yeah for Maine!!!

Ahhh.. back in the arms of Saramago

Haha Lori! It's wonderful when you read something by one of your favorite authors. Unless it doesn't measure up.
