What are you reading?
Connie, welcome to the madness... haa haa. I still wont go to my library (unless it is for a sale) to check out books, so my wallet is taking the brunt of this obsession! Not that I mind it at all... I love buying books and being around them. My new little reading corner is all set up and its awesome. I dont read anywhere else in the house anymore!
Lori: I am so jealous! I really do prefer new books. I'm meticulous about their condition. Library books just feel dirty and are smelly to me (I have super olfactory senses), and they come with these cheap plastic covers over them with icky barcodes. Altogether, gross. But until I get some income again, I am relegated to borrowing. I try to think of it as therapy.Besides, when I do get the chance now to buy a new book (I received a B&N gift card for my birthday recently) it's such a special treat again (as opposed to simply feeding the beast, LOL).
This is just to say hi and say that I've just started to read We Need to Talk About Kevin (Five Star Paperback) (Paperback) by Lionel Shriver (Author)
I finished Balzac and The Little Chinese Steamstress. I really enjoyed it because it had some unexpected funny moments which made me chuckle out loud. I've moved onto Snowflower and The Secret Fan. I've only read a couple of pages, but it sucked me right in. I'm leaving for Vegas tomorrow, so I'm taking Snowflower and A Great and Terrible Beauty. I don't usually take 2 books with me, but with layovers and possible delays I'm afraid of being without reading material...Oh the horror!!
A bit.....I think I'll be completely healthy next week. And good luck with A Great and Terrible Beauty! I wonder if you'll finish it before you come back... I can never really read all that much on trips. Even on the plane.
I doubt I will be finished with it, but I think I will have it at least started. Tomorrow I will be catching up with sleep on the airplane. I have a 6:15 am plane to catch *sigh*. But for the rest of the week I will have some pool time, which I can double as reading time. Snowflower is not a long book, although the print and margins are small. Plus from what I read last night I gather the story is engrossing which makes me want to read fast.
I love it when the story is addictive. I haven't found one that has given me the "Gemma Doyle" reaction. I'm waiting for it. Although, City of Bones was really good, I'm just waiting for the sequel at the library. I usually take early flights too, aren't they awful? I hate waking up so early. I'm sure you'll have a great time!
LOL...I don't think I can recall a book that has given me the "Gemma Doyle" reaction. I really like the Harry Potter series, but I'm not completely obsessed with it. I don't like early flight either, but it was the cheaper flight and I just want to get away, so I booked it. I had went last year, but only for 4 days...it was the best vacation ever!! This is why I want to go back..lol.
Haha, and cheap is always good! Haha! I don't think I'll get the feeling for a loongggg time. But I might find another series that I love. In a little bit. And I PRAY that I never have the "Twilight" feeling again. Ever.
Go Kellie go!!! Sorry, I jsut always hope when somebody reads a book I read, that they will feel the same enjoyment as I did, so I really hope you cna continue The historian and like it a lot in the end. :-))
I just finished reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray" with my boyfriend. We have a long distance relationship, so we read books together and discuss them to feel more connected. We are also reading "The Five Love Languages" which has lead us to some interesting discussions.
We are about to start Book 2 of The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan (The Great Hunt). I am not usually that into Science Fiction/Fantasy, but Book One was great, so I now I'm hooked.
On my own, I am reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" and teaching it to my 9th grade class at school, and I am listening to Nick Hornby's "A Long Way Down" which I am enjoying much more than "How to Be Good". I think I like the characters more.
It's quite the balancing act, reading all of these books simultaneously, but it seems to work for me.
Lori, with a description as enticing as that I'm going to have to pick up Smashed, Squashed... on my next trip to the happy place.
Lori is an expert on reccommendations, from Blindness to Christopher Moore. :)I'm STILL reading 'A Curse Dark as Gold'. Ack, I am wayy too addicted to GR.
Leslie, you're in for a treat. The Great Hunt is really where the Wheel of Time series starts to pick up speed. I challenge you to resist moving straight on to the 3rd book. I went from 1-9 without a break in between. I think I'll definitely have to reread that whole series next year.
Logan, I am on page 70 something and its just crazy madness.... I think you will love it. He describes things in such a comical way. Nothing like seeing the beauty in digging a hole in which to deficate in..... Hee hee
Still working my way through Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. That is one long sucker! I am really enjoying it, however, so I think its length is a good thing in this case.
I havent finished, but I feel confident that you guys will enjoy it. Its really funny and full of craziness. The main guy just cant seem to catch a break....
I don't think any book character EVER catches a break. No time to just sip lemonade and not have to deal with a stupid problem! (They call that a plot, right)?
Oh well,it's not like I don't have a gazillion others to read and it's bound to make it's way here eventually.
Ahh...I'm thinking about starting mid-month. So I can get the full Halloween feel and still have plenty of time to read the three books.
Yeah, it feels good. And also knowing that I'll have a decent amount of time to finish a couple of other books I want to read.
Carol BurnettOne More TimeThis is what I am reading right now.
Playing around with this add book/author thing.
I'm reading Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier, haven't really got into yet it though I am about 150 pages into the book. ^^ Any thoughts on Rebecca? I was going to read My Cousin Rachel first.
I'm a little more than 1/2 way through "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" set in the mid 1800's China - story of two young girls who have their feet bound, and the journey into womanhood, and how they are determined to stay "old sames".
I'm reading Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey by Chuck Palahniuk. I'm only at about chapter 5 now though.
Rebecca - Tell us how you like it. There are some Palahniuk fans in here. I haven't read that one yet, but I just reserved Choke from the library.
Andrew, So many obligations, so little time for fun. Look at it this way, you earn a few sheckles and you get to buy more books. It is a vicious cycle.
Mirela, I read A Thousand Spendid Suns and I really cannot get over the sensitivity Hosseini exhibits for the female gender. I heard him interviewed about it and he said it was very difficult for him to get the voice right, but I think he is spot on. Can't wait for him to write another book.
Connie, I have been trying to restrain my buying urges, but our local library has been closed for over a month because they are moving to a new building. Wish they had asked for volunteers. I would have rented an 18-wheeler if it would have opened the library quicker. I just want to be able to get some of the GR books without having to pay the price. Patience, patience. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Lori, I don't have a corner, but have rediscovered a loveseat in my bedroom. Just sitting waiting for me and I have been ignoring its potential. Low lighting and a glass of wine and I am in heaven.
Finished The Fifth Floor by Michael Harvey. Anyone looking for a really good, quick read with mystery and a flavor for the Chicago scene, go for it. I am a sloooooooooooow reader and finished this one in two days. Couldn't put it down.Started Racing in the Rain this morning and so far pretty good. Still working on Drowning Ruth and Draculaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Leslie, Wow, what a great idea sharing a book like that. When my husband was living in TN for two years before I moved here, we used to share books and the newspaper. I read the books and would tell him about them and he would keep me up on what was going on in the world.
Gracee, Did the footbinding make you wince? I had to take that one in stages even though I usually have a strong stomach for these things. I really liked the book.
Just finished Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel. It started out really strong, then lulled for about 75-100 pages, then picked up with a strong ending. Worth the quick read.A friend lent me Go Ask Alice so I'll start and likely finish that one today/tomorrow.
Then it's on to Dracula!

I tried a little more and I'm still not liking it. Something about the writing style. Just doesn't grab me. I used to be the person who'd finish a book no matter what. Now I just think life's too short to torture myself. What makes it even harder is that now that I've joined goodreads---and am re-discovering my local library---there are even more books on my TBR list than ever before. It's so hard not to want to move on!
