Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Abigail, I can't wait to hear how you're enjoying The Cave. I picked it up on one of my recent splurges and can tell that it won't be long until I get to it.

Today I'm reading Chalmers Johnson's Nemesis, which is the third book in his history of the American Empire Project. Really fascinating stuff written very concisely.

message 3553: by Sherry (last edited Sep 23, 2008 11:27AM) (new)

Sherry I finally finished Cider House Rules and The Book That Changed My Life ("71 remarkable writers celebrate the books that matter the most to them")as well as The Call of the Wild by Jack London and now I'm onto When the Emperor was Devine which is about a Japanese family's experience in an internment camp during WW2.Beautiful prose. Also,I'm still have 5 chapters to go on Watchmen.

message 3554: by Jen (last edited Sep 23, 2008 11:48AM) (new)

Jen | 278 comments Sherry, I just started Watchmen and am really enjoying it. It's very different from what I'm used to and is so well done.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I am currently reading The Secret Between Us by Barbara Delinsky.
Has anyone else read some of her other books? Thsi is the first book I have read by her.

message 3556: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Jen,I agree. It is so different from what I'm used to as well but it really is amazing.

message 3557: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I just finished Family Baggage and am now onto The Lost Constitution by William Martin.

message 3558: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) Sherry & Jen, I love the Watchmen. It's my favorite graphic novel hands down. I'm a little nervous, though, because the movie comes out in 2009. I would be terribly upset it they botched it...

Ok, finished Odd Hours! Not as good as the others, a little strange come the end, but still a great read... I mean, Cmon, its Odd Thomas we are talking about here!

I am about to embark on "Shmashed, Squashed..."

message 3560: by Marsha (last edited Sep 23, 2008 05:46PM) (new)

Marsha I am finally on the home stretch of The Cider House Rules with my crazy work schedule this last couple of weeks. I'll do some better late than never posting on that thread.

I am looking forward to starting A Great and Terrible Beauty next.

message 3562: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I was struggling with "Death With Interruptions" and got to Page 116 before I finally had to set it aside. I'll try it another time, maybe I'm just not in the mood for this type book right now. But never before I have read so many words that said so little. It also bugs me there is no real characters in this book. In fiction I need to read about actual people, not ideas or society. Are all his books like this? This one has received some excellent reviews, both by professional reviewers and our own readers here. It must just be me.

So I set it aside and read another book in the meantime, "Tethered" by Amy MacKinnon. Great story with a real, fragile and damaged main character. She reminded me a bit of Kathy Mallory in Carol O'Connell's series. I wouldn't mind reading more books featuring this character but this could be intended as a standalone.

Next up will be "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo".

message 3563: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments 3/4 of the way through Atonement which I am enjoying contrary to some reviews. Next will read Silk which has been recommended by a friend then Drowning Ruth - also recommended.

message 3564: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I loved Atonement as well Melody,i think all the negative things actually helped me to enjoy it as I was expecting some thing really bad and was pleasantly surprised to find it was wonderful.Loved Drowning Ruth as well.Hope you enjoy it!

message 3565: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Just finished Half of a Yellow Sun (Chimanda Ngozi Adichie) and Madonnas of Leningrad (Debra Dean)- liked both of them.

message 3566: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments I mentioned earlier that I am reading The Historian (Kostava). I'm only about 50 pages in and finding that the book I picked up on economics is more engrossing. Perhaps it's just my mood of the moment. 50 pages isn't much though. Does the Historian get any better?

message 3567: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Lori, The Oddster is one of my favorite characters. His quirkiness makes me laugh, but I have to admit, I am with you on this one.

message 3568: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Finished Shadow of the Wind yesterday. What a great read. I never would have picked it up if not for this group. Thanks for helping me expand my mind. Also, finished listening to The Last Lecture. Made me happy and sad at the same time. Randy Pausch was quite a unique guy.

Started Dracula today. Will also start The Fifth Floor today.

message 3569: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Hi Connie, I think the Historian does get better. The long beginning is a bit ..well long but the moment two different stories are told it gets so much better. At least that was what I thought. I liked the book a lot. Good luck!

message 3570: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Linda, you are so right, The shadow of the wind is a great story!

I just finished Alice's adventures in wonderland and the other story where she goes through a window (I read it in Italian and don't remember the english title). I am still wondering whyyyyyy I started the book. Really didn't like it at all.

message 3571: by [deleted user] (new)

Connie, I agree with Jeane that the book picks up pace when the back stories are being told. But I actually got bogged down whenever it came back to the present...except for at the end.

message 3572: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Just finished "Off Season" by Anne Rivers Siddons.
This was a very weird book and I did not care for the ending. Not typical for this author. I have read just about everything she has written and loved it all.
Disappointed here, however, I think she wanted readers to discuss this book. Maybe to get more people to read it. If that is the case, I think she has succeeded. There are threads all over the place about it.

Going to start "One More Time" by Carol Burnett.

message 3573: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments I'm reading A Voyage Long and Strange by Tony Horwitz--my non-fiction pick for the month of Sept.

I'm enjoying this book--I like the way Tony Horwitz storytells history. Here's my problem: life is so hectic right now that every time I sit down at the end of the day to read I fall asleep!!!! Not just eyes roll into the back of your head while your reading or your eyes close and you don't know for how long, but serious wake up with the book on your chest and a crick in your neck asleep! I'm so bummed, b/c it's not because I'm bored with what I'm reading-I like it. I'll never finish a book this way!!!!!!

message 3574: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm having that falling asleep problem at night right now. And it stinks because my wife is really into a Picoult which multiplies my own reading time.

message 3575: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am really getting FALLEN by David Maine. It goes backwards... I like it. Also, am almost done with CIDER HOUSE, liking it too.

message 3576: by Tisha (last edited Sep 24, 2008 10:47AM) (new)

Tisha Hey! I noticed there is a "Books Mentioned in this Topic" option that has shown up to the right. It only says Mansfield Park at the moment, but does anybody know how that happened or how you do it??

message 3577: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments That is weird. I have never seen that before.

message 3578: by Tisha (new)

Tisha I figured it out... there is an add book/author link at the bottom of the comment box. No more creating links for books the long way.

One book that needs to surely be represted in this group and thread is Blindness!

message 3579: by Mimmi (new)

Mimmi (onedrwumn) | 34 comments I am currently readig The Book of Lies by Brian Meltzer, so far its good page turner...no spoilers please... Let me know if anyone is reading it.

message 3580: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Maddie, I have The Book of Lies on my TBR list. I really enjoy Meltzer's books (I have read three thus far) and look forward to reading the rest.

message 3581: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Julie, we should just get together tomorrow and just sit and read. Ohhh, we could do that at the library! lol

Anyways, sticking to the topic of the thread -- I finished Baby Laughs and have moved on to The Book Thief -- yes, I'm behind the times. It's a good read, so far. I read some to my son today, too. That was the best way to interact while he was awake and still get some reading done. :-P

message 3582: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments Finally finished Cider House Rules...now on to Oscar Wao...

message 3583: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I FINALLY FINISHED SENSE AND SENSIBILITY!!!!! Don't know why it took me so long I just couldn't get into it...maybe it's because I've seen the movie before so I knew the story line so I wasn't really interested in it as much as I would be if I was just discovering the details as I read. I seem to have that problem when I see a movie and then read the book...except with Little Women I loved reading the book even though I'd seen the movie many times before. But I'm rambling on here...my next read will be The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent.

message 3584: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I'm reading Aztec by Gary Jennings. It's my book club's next pick. We usually read one book a month, but with this selection, we're taking two. At 700+ pages, I'll be reading this book for a while. :)

message 3585: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I finished FALLEN by David Maine. Now I am into A LONG WAY GONE: MEMOIRS OF A BOY SOLDIER by Ishmael Beah. Very intense.

Ann, what did you think of Fallen?

message 3587: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I liked FALLEN once I figured out what the heck was going on, or should I say where it was going... backwards! I really liked the way it made Eve the strong one, and Adam the weak. I also have THE PRESERVATIONIST by him to read. Thank you for the recommendation!

message 3588: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Still reading Anna Karenina (really trying to tackle that one to the ground!) and The Secret of Chimneys by Agatha Christie..

Has anyone read any of the Isabel Dalhousie books by Alexander McCall Smith. They caught my eye the other day in Borders and I wondered if they were worth checking into.

message 3589: by ScottK (last edited Sep 24, 2008 10:31PM) (new)

ScottK | 535 comments I will be done with Standard of Honor by Jack Whyte tonight, then onto god only knows what I have narrowed it down to :

Napoleon's Pyramids by William Dietrich
Michael Tolliver Lives by Armistead Maupin
The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly

message 3590: by Katie (new)

Katie L. (kml658) | 2 comments I'm currently reading Christopher Paolini's Brisingr which is a lot more enjoyable then I expected it to be!

message 3591: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments Thanks to the posts regarding The Historian, I think I'll stick with it a while. After all, one of my favorite books (MacDonad's, Fall on your Knees) was slow for about the first 100 pages or so, but it turned out amazing.

message 3592: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Still reading The Talented Mr. Ripley...it is sad. School work/studying is really taking a lot of time from my reading :( Darn school....and now my dad is making me get a job on top of it. *sigh* oh well.....

message 3593: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading now "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and I'm delighted.

message 3594: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Connie-
Regarding the Historian.

I personally did not care for the book. It was way too long and many parts too boring.
I thought there was way too much detail information in lieu of plot.
I heard it took the author 10 years to write the book. I'm surprised the editors let it be so long.

message 3595: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments JT
I've read the first on the Isabel Dalhousie "The Sunday Philosophy Club"
It was OK. Not as good has his Ladies Detective Agency series.
It's short though so you can whip thru it and see if you like it.

message 3596: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 25, 2008 04:41AM) (new)

Kellie, I must agree with you on "The Historian". Probable this is why I didn't succeeded to finish it. Otherwise, the plot could be captivating.

Ann, The Preservationist is a great one as well. Be prepared for alot of 'rutting'.. hee hee. Its such a clever look at Noah and the ark. Im so happy to see more Maine-Fever!

I am loving my current read: Its from Lance Carbuncle (a goodreads author) "Smashed, Squashed.." Very interesting so far. A guy who took some bad drugs ,way back when, is still living at home with his mom, his stinky, smelly ole dog and stuffed "daddy", and is driving cross country with his cousin.... and the hilarity ensues. Really enjoying it so far!!

message 3598: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Still reading Moby Dick....will manage it, have to manage it. Just started Maigret et il ladro (or le voleur de maigret)by georges simenon. I needed an easy, light reading after Alice's adventures in wonderland!!!

Let's see how that add book button works!Moby Dick

message 3599: by Renee (new)

Renee Hi Julianne

I also fall asleep - day or night - if I read books at home. I think it's from the days when I read books to my kids at night - I now associate books with sleep! I actually have to leave my house to read - coffee shops, bookstores, etc.

I've been wanting to read Horwitz's book. I think I'll see if my local library has it. I'd rather buy it but I'm trying to cut down on book buying. I wonder if there's patch for that...

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) JT, kudos to you for sticking with old Anna - you really are determined to get through it, aren't you?
