Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Charity -- I feel your pain about The Other Boleyn Girl! The same thing happened to me. And I finally got a copy and couldn't renew because people were on the list (but I was a responsible book borrower and returned it on time then got back in line.) The kicker is that I finally got back to the top, the called to say it was on hold for me. I went in the next morning to pick it up and my hold had been canceled! *gasp* They said I had an overdue book, so it was put on hold for the next person and I was "reinserted into the queue." Of course they realized their error after the next person got it...I had dropped the "overdue" book into the book drop after work the day it was due, but they hadn't checked it so it was not actually late according to their rules! I moaned & groaned so much about it that one of my co-workers went out & bought me a copy! And of course the next day, I get a call that my copy is available for pickup! *L* What a fiasco!!

I just got called yesterday for The Abstinence Teacher and I went online today & saw they just received The B of a Whiskey Robber today from ILL, so I should have BOTH May reads in my hands by Sat! And I'm off Mon & Tues next week so I may actually get to start reading them!! YES!!!

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Mandy/Lori -- I'm reading the mini-hardback of For One More Day right now! *L*

message 303: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I can't believe they canceled your hold for an overdue book. The only reasons we cancel holds in the system I work at is if they don't get picked up within 7 days or a person requests we cancel it. Glad you finally got the book though...it's on my list of books to read...but I try to read an authors works in order so I've got 5 more of Gregory's books (that the library owns) to read before I get to that one...I just finished her Wideacre trilogy the other day. Hopefully by the time I get to it there won't be much of a wait since the system only owns one copy currently.

I hope to start reading Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner tomorrow.

message 304: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I just finished "the anatomist" it was a weird book, one of those few books where I don't know if I liked it or not, I guess I just kind of kept waiting for it to get better, and it never did. I wouldn't even know who to recommend it to, not for people who are easily offended.

I started Franz Kafka's short stories, I loved his work as a teenager and have been wanting to revisit him for a while. Keep you guys posted!

message 305: by Renata (new)

Renata | 67 comments Well, just finished Go With Me by Castle Freeman. Anyone else read it? It was just about 150 pages long, so no great loss, but kind of a waste of time. I actually can't believe this book got published.

I'm moving onto the book-of-the-month books next.

message 306: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Renata,

Are you talking about this book-of-the-month books list? It looks pretty good overall. I'm planning on tackling it myself.

message 307: by Renata (new)

Renata | 67 comments No, Charity, I was actually talking about our group read books for the month of May. But the list you referred to looks good (overwhelming, though). Will be a good list to refer to for inspiration.

message 308: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Oh. Gotcha. :-)

message 309: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Charity, that is quite a list there. Who created that? Ive read a few on there, but some of them look really good. when i get time, i wil lhave to sift through it and add some of those to my always growing to-read list....

message 310: by Charity (last edited May 02, 2008 12:19PM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Hey, Lori. Here is the list source: Well-Stocked Bookcase.

I 'created' it for the list of bests site though. I thought it had some pretty good titles.

message 311: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments That's a great list, Charity. Thanks for the link! ...because I really needed more books on my "to read" list. Sigh.

message 312: by Lucia (new)

Lucia (countingpulses) | 4 comments For the month of May I'm just going to (attempt) focus on books I've already started reading, instead of cracking open a new one (or buying one, for that matter). But so far, I'm re-reading right now because some books just deserve multiple readings throughout my various states.

Right now I'm re-reading "The Noonday Demon" written by Andrew Solomon.

And here's a list of the books I want to finish, hopefully within the month so I can justify my reasons for buying a new pile next month.

"The Wizard Knight" by Gene Wolfe, "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, and "My Name Is Red" by Orhan Pahmuk.

I still have some new novels to start, but I'll have to practice self control on that matter, or I'll never finish anything on my bookshelf. :(

message 313: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 107 comments Hi Gail I would suggest Chasing the Devil's Tail by David Fulmer. This is a really good mystery set in 1900s New Orleans. It's a really gripping tale.

Another book I'd also suggest, this one a fiction piece, with a mystery involved. Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold. This one was a favorite read by my book club last year. It's set in San Francisco and is a fictional story of Carter the Great, a magician in the 1920.

Good luck in your search.

message 314: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 107 comments Jen, I do have to agree about The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zabon. I, too, love this book. That one is definitely a good read Gail.

message 315: by Magpie67 (new)

Magpie67 | 33 comments Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris
Nine by Jan Burke
Gossamer by Lois Lowry
Goose Chase by Patrice Kindl

These are just a few in my stacks.

message 316: by Scott (new)

Scott Schulz | 3 comments Continuing on my trek back into reading popular fiction, I just finished The Kite Runner. Now the search begins for the next title :)

message 317: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethwerling) Question: I just picked up the sequel to "Chocolat" at the library. I didn't read "Chocolat" but I saw the movie. What does everyone think? Can I safely read the sequel just going on what I saw in the movie? I looked for "Chocolat" at the library but they didn't have it.

message 318: by Jaime (new)

Jaime (jaimechm) OMG! I just finished The Book Thief and it was amazing! So sad and beautiful and compelling. Kristy - you could not have given a better warning. It's only been a few hours since I finished and it's still haunting me.

I need something light and airy now...I'm starting "I Was Told There'd be Cake" by Sloane Crosley this afternoon.

message 319: by Cynthia (last edited May 03, 2008 12:46PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments For BETH - There are somethings in Chocolat the book that are very different from the movie. I read the original when I got the sequel as an advanced reader edition. I wasn't as thrilled with the books as with the movie (shockingly - the changes made in the movie made it so much better - I might not have watched the movie had I read the book first - but I'm glad I watched the movie) and the second book was just ok.

message 320: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Jaime, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. Its gone onto my list of favourite books!

message 321: by Mona (new)

Mona | 52 comments The Book Thief is on my to-read list. So many of my students have read it and told me to read it too... I just have to find the time to read all these books! :) Glad you liked it so much Jaime.

message 322: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments YES YES YES YES!!!! FINALLY finished that Margaret Atwood book! FINALLY!!! Finals week is almost over, which means I can read for myself again! The next few weeks are going to be non-stop personal reading! I love those three weeks between the end of a term and the beginning of another, it's like when a drowning person struggles back to the surface for one last breath of fresh air before being tugged beneath the currents.

I'm going to read some fluff first, probably Synners by Pat Cadigan because it's been sitting on my shelf for nearly a year. Then it's on to Jose Saramago's Blindness. I can't wait!

message 323: by Elena (new)

Elena hernandez (elena2348) I am currently reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. Its pretty interesting!

message 324: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm reading Sundays at Tiffany's at the moment by James Patterson, about a third of the way through, not too sure about it, it's about an imaginary friend who comes back years later, very different from his usual stuff.

message 325: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Just starting Ballad of the Whiskey Robber.

message 326: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Oh. And I'm happy to report that my reserved copy of The Other Boleyn Girl is finally in transit. I should have it in my possession in a matter of days. Whoo hoo!

message 327: by Celeste (last edited May 06, 2008 06:28AM) (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 107 comments I just started Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson. I mean just started. Like maybe two pages in.

For the light side, I think I'll start The 2nd of The Sisters Grimm-The Unusual Suspects. These are really cute and really fast.

message 328: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) all right! I just finished that Kafka book and should be able to start Ballad tonight Yeah!

message 329: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Finished Sunday at Tiffany's last night. To start with I wasn't sure about this book, seemed a bit fairytale to me but when I actually told myself to stop thinking and just enjoy the story I realised I did actually like it. If you can suspend your disbelief this is a great book. I found myself lost on the journey with Jane and Michael. I'm so glad I finally thought just enjoy the book, Mandy.

message 330: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments I ran to the library yesterday to pick up The Book Thief after reading Jaime's comments! I also picked up Little Children by Tom Perotta- has anyone read that one?

I am Legend was incredible!!

message 331: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Eliza, did you see the movie for I Am Legend? I really loved the novel, and was upset the movie did not follow it.

I just finished 20,000 Leauges. I started it 12 days ago, and finally finished. Verne is sort of like Saramago for me. I need to take a breather here and there from his novels, as they are very heavy and technically/scientifically descriptive.. tho they are so well written and never fail to haunt me.

I will be starting Invitation to a Beheading in a little bit. I am looking foward to this one!

message 332: by Alayna (new)

Alayna | 78 comments i'm currently reading (on my way to finish it soon) forever odd by dean koontz, the second in the odd thomas series, i like them but i feel like after this book i'm gonna need a breather book b4 i read another odd thomas book

anybody know some good breather books?

message 333: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
what sort of breather book are you looking for?
Gils All Fright Diner is a quick fun read (about a werewolf and vampire who end up at a diner helping the owner fight zombies, a goth chick who worships the dark gods and a creature from outerspace).... its very cleverly written! Or anything by Christopher Moore (A Dirty Job is the best!)

If those are not up your alley, you could try This Book Will Save Your Life by A.M. Holmes -- great novel about a man who chooses to shut himself into his house until he thinks hes had a heartattack and then the world comes rushing back into his life!

message 334: by Maria (new)

Maria (marias2grls) | 3 comments I am reading the Dead Room by Heather Graham REALLY good book!

message 335: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments My wife ordered the ultimate easy read from Amazon, and after watching her guffaw her way through it decided that I needed to give it a read. So now I'm reading Chelsea Handler's Are you there, Vodka? It's me, Chelsea. Her humor isn't for everyone but if you've ever seen her show on E! and laughed, then you would enjoy this book.

is This book will save your life, light. Dosent contain anything too heavy, cuz i normally read horror books and the like so i want something thats upbeat, not about dead ppl for a change lol both of them sound like great books, i recently saw that book onsale at chapters when i went just a few days ago but got a differnt book instead, too bad. i think i'll check those books out thanks

message 337: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Alayna... This Book Will Save Your Life is not heavy at all. Or, at least, it wasnt for me. There are alot of odd, weird things that happen to this man, the people he befriends are excentric and interesting... its a really good read. You should enjoy it :)

message 338: by Alayna (new)

Alayna | 78 comments thanks Lori

message 339: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments I know it's YA, but I really enjoyed Eclipse, the third book in the "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer. It's very easy to read, about a girl who falls in love with a vampire, but her best friend is a werewolf. I know it sounds cheesy, but I really liked this third book in the series. I laughed, gasped, screamed out "AH HA!" several times (much to the dismay of both co-workers and strangers depending on where I was reading!) and even had several little "awwww" moments. It's light and fun and, gosh darnit I liked it! *L*

I also just started yesterday (FINALLY) Rhett Butler's People and I like it so far (only about a chapter & a half in!) It's better than I thought and I'm smacking myself for not getting to it earlier. I am also in the midst of For One More Day by Mitch Albom and I will be starting The Ballad of a Whiskey Robber tonight so I can join the group discussion!

Happy reading to all!!

message 340: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Katie... did you ever read Gils All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez? If you like vamps and werewolves, you might really enjoy this book. Its about a two middle aged guys ( who happen to be a vampire and werewolf) who end up at this diner, where the owner is battling zombies. It has a ghost, a goth chick who worships the old gods and lots of other strange funny things.. I read it in one day, I just couldnt put it down.... The author takes some odd characters and really has fun with it. It sounds cheesy but the book was really good!

message 341: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm reading The Time Traveler's Wife at the moment and am really enjoying it, I sit here at my computer "working" just itching to get back into the book. I've only read about 70 pages or so but so far so good and I wonder how the rest of the book shapes up.

message 342: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Hi Alayna,

For a light and entertaining read I'd recommend Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, it's a non-fiction book but reads like fiction. Also if you were into chick lit I'd recommend Life Swap by Jane Green or Where Rainbows End by Cecelia Ahern and then you have the Shopaholic series from Sophie Kinsella. Another book which rarely gets talked about is This Other Eden by Ben Elton, it's been a while since I read it but I remember really liking it, my favourite of his. Also Kathy Lette books are good as light and funny reads.

message 343: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Shadow of the Wind. I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of anything to do with Espana. Has a dark undertone, but overall an amazing book to read.

message 344: by Shary (new)

Shary (sharyfg) | 104 comments I just finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was a different read for me. I liked it and Ishiguro's writing style.
Next up is Up Close and Dangerous by Linda Howard. I wanted to follow Never Let Me Go with a light read.

message 345: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I have a couple on the go.I'm reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk and finding it fascinating. Also reading The Mother Dance By Harriet Lerner which I recommend to all Moms. Not your typical parenting book but invaluable none the less.I also am reading two books by Thich Nhat Hanh called Peace is Every Step and Taming the Tiger Within.

message 346: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Ennui - The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorites! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Any plot that brings in an obsession with books is on the right path.

message 347: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC I am waiting for Ballad to arrive on interlibrary loan. So, in the meantime, I am listening to Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos in the car. I am reading When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin.

message 348: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I have read a few chapters of "Ballad" and it is truly interesting the intro with all the historical facts: Just Awesome! I'm glad I'm reading this book.

message 349: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Sherry, I'm so glad you're enjoying Snow. I could barely put it down when I read it. I had no idea about the history of religious tension in Turkey before then, and was really interested in it. Have you read Pamuk's other novel, My Name is Red? I see it every time I go to Borders but haven't picked it up yet.

message 350: by Sherry (new)

Sherry No I haven't.I just discovered this by chance but what a beautiful and fascinating book.I appreciate the delicacy in which he writes about the religious, political context of the country. It's clearly complex and yet he writes in such a way as to illuminate each position. I've been badgering my family with the things I've been reading until their eyes cross but I can't help it,the book's just too interesting.
