Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Joanie, Glad you liked it. It sounds like it will be a good read! I will definitely let you know what I think when I get to it. :)

message 2902: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 95 comments I'm about to start reading the Stephanie Meyers books and I'm looking forward too them because I've heard such good things about them.

message 2903: by Robyn (new)

Robyn I am halfway through Forever Odd by Dean Koontz( so far it's great.) and just picked up the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood to read once I'm done.

message 2904: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I finished THE BOOK THEIF and it was great. Now I am reading FRACTURED by Karen Slaughter. And will start one of the September books soon.

message 2905: by Bluedaizy (new)

Bluedaizy | 135 comments If you want to discuss Fractured, let me know. I wanna talk about it. :)

message 2906: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Well, I just started it, but I love all of her books.:)!!! So I know this is going to be good by just the 1st chapter.

message 2907: by Bluedaizy (new)

Bluedaizy | 135 comments I do too. I was not happy with the last one Beyond Reach or Skin Privilege. But it was an unforgettable read. What'd you think of that one?

message 2908: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments BEYOND REACH... I could not believe the ending!!! I was so mad! But The Grant County series is my favorite.

message 2909: by Bluedaizy (new)

Bluedaizy | 135 comments Me, too. I really don't think that should be "allowed" when the characters are so new. I keep hoping Jeff will experience a miracle similar to those in soap operas. :)

message 2910: by Melanie (last edited Aug 24, 2008 05:03PM) (new)

Melanie I am currently reading All Things Must Fight to Live (Stories of War and Deliverance in Congo)
by Bryan Mealer. It is a very good book (warning, it is heavy and horrific at times). It would be a good read for those that are not especially familiar with the situation there.

To balance that one out I am starting a slightly less serious one (I hope) titled Back to Wando Passo by David Payne.

message 2911: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I finished Living in a Foreign Language, which is a travelogue written by the actor Michael Tucker tonight. It was only okay. It didn't really go anywhere. I usually really enjoy travel lit, but this one didn't do anything for me.

Now I am going to start reading Ireland by Frank Delaney. I hope this one is good!

message 2912: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society today....it was really and truly fantastic...it took a little time to get used to the style (it's an Epistolary novel) but it's such a interesting story with fantastic character's and a lovely ending. I highly recommend.

Next for me it will be Loving Frank by Nancy Horan.

message 2913: by Angela (new)

Angela | 64 comments I haven't seen the movie yet; I'll have to check it out to see how it compares to the book.

message 2914: by Angela (new)

Angela | 64 comments Musical- one of the stars, Aaron Lazar went to Cherry Hill West high school (NJ). He was a friend of one of my college roommates. It looks like it could be interesting. I'm waiting for the reviews to come out. If it looks good, I'll make the effort to see it.

message 2915: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) I'm finally starting to get really into Anna Karenina. It's taken me a bit of time to get really invested in it, but I think I've got both feet in the water at this point.

Thinking of starting one of my purchases from the weekend - either The Whole World Over by Julia Glass, Then We Came to the End, or Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro.

message 2916: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Cynthia, I'm glad you liked The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society so much. I am dying to read that one, it looks great! :)

message 2917: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments OK
I just finished my fluff book "Making Your Mind Up" by Jill Mansell. I liked it. Great story. Loved the characters. Gave my brain a rest for my next one...A Tale of Two Cities
I am anxious to read this one.
I really want to like it but I'm afraid it's going to be another Moby Dick.
Encouragement will be greatly appreciated.

message 2918: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Kellie,
While I did read Tale of Two Cities quite awhile ago, in my opinion it is much better than Moby Dick. Definitely give it a shot! Have you read any Dickens before?

message 2919: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments ToTC is WAY BETTER THAN Moby Dick !!! YOU CAN DO IT YES YOU CAN !!!

message 2920: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Scott, you are such a great cheerleader!

I finished Native Son and The Book Thief today.
Both were brilliant in their own magnificent way.

I am not going to read Fathers and Sons before forging ahead on Cider House Rules. Thought I would try to throw in a short one first.

message 2921: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Argh, I'm still reading Shantaram, about a third of the way through - I really like it but I haven't had much time to read lately so it's taken me longer than I thought.

I have Oscar Wao and Cider House Rules ready and waiting to also read for next month's books. I think I'm going to be scarping in by the skin of my teeth with the group reads but I'm damn well going to try.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Mandy, Cider House Rules is taking far longer than I had hoped too. I thought I would have had it finnished by now but I actually still have 550 pages to go, LOL. I haven't had as much time this week either and I also sneeked in Fire in the Blood which only took a day.

message 2923: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Thank you Scott. That is incentive enough!! :)

I read "Great Expectations" in highschool and liked it.
I actually remembered some of what it was about....

message 2924: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments Mandy,

I'm still reading Shantaram as well. I'm not as far into it as you are, and was really hoping this weekend would have given me some extra reading time. Alas, it did not! I would like to read Cider House Rules for September as well, but I'm not sure if I'll have time. I'm going to keep trying :)

message 2925: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments I will finish The Lace Reader today and am torn between Blindness, Cider House Rules and Drowning Ruth. Or maybe I will start all of them. Any recommendations from the group?

message 2926: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Phew... I work for the weekend, and look at these posts I have come back to! Man oh man... what is a girl to do? I certainly cant stop working, as I need money to pay for my cable bill to be able to use the pc.. haa haa!

Sera and Liz::: Yea for more love on Blindess! One of my all time favs. We have a group thread for that one, so as you read it, feel free to post away in there... You will have plenty of people to talk to about it!

Ann.. I am soo happy you loved Blindess.. amazing sums it up pretty well, doesnt it!

Joanie and Ann, I hear you about the GR obsession. Its the first thing I check anymore... I used to shower and eat before visiting the pc in the mornings, but no more! I got up at 8am, and have been sitting here since then, its almost 10am now..... I need to log off and shower... if not for me, well, then, at least for those around me :)

Robyn, which Odd THomas book do you like more? I am assuming since you are reading Forever Odd, that would read the series in order? My favorite is Odd Thomas, but the ending of Forever Odd was really good.... I cant wait to buy Odd Hours...

message 2927: by Susan (new)

Susan | 100 comments I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife (which I really enjoyed) and am now starting Interpreter of Maladies.

I love reading what people are reading-you just never know what might be your next must read!

message 2928: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree Susan. I am going to end up reading books I probably never would have read because of GR and this group.

I started Book of Lost Things yesterday.

message 2929: by Charity (last edited Aug 25, 2008 07:56AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Let's see...

* I put down Cocaine Nights by J.G. Ballard a week ago because it royally sucked. I have no real interest in picking it back up again.

* I finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak a few nights ago and I was really impressed by the last 100 pages.

* I started AND finished Now All We Need is a Title: Famous Book Titles and How They Got That Way by André Bernard yesterday. I soooo love books on books.

* I started The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz yesterday and I'm LOOOOOVING it! I'm sure I will finish this up lickety split.

* Next up will be either: The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster OR The Cider House Rules by John Irving. It really doesn't matter which one is first. I plan to read them back to back.

message 2930: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Just finished The Shack by William P. Young....not really what I expected, but it was ok.

I'll start Love Rosie, by Cecilia Ahearn next. Nice and fluffy before TOTC.

message 2931: by Karlene (new)

Karlene Staves (karlenestaves) Currently I'm reading a few books, but the one that's caught my attention the most is "Follow the Cow Herd Boy" by J.A. Joshi. It was a slow start, but has become a fantastic read!!

message 2932: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Charity, I'm so pleased that you're enjoying Oscar Wao. I'm anxiously waiting for my pre-order to ship from Amazon. I keep refreshing the tracking page in the hopes that it ships sooner than expected.

Susan, I hope you enjoy Interpreter of Maladies. I wasn't a fan of short stories prior to picking it up, but Lahiri is such a master wordsmith that I was sold from page one.

I finally finished up all the fluff-filled pulp horror that I've been reading and am tucking into Cider House Rules. It's funny, I went out onto the patio this morning to read before work and it was actually somewhat chilly and overcast (relative to Arizona) so I think Cider House will have the perfect temperature for enjoyment.

message 2933: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Logan, I went out into the patio too this morning and it was 65 with a hint of Fall. Beautiful weather and perfect for reading.

message 2934: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I'm really glad to be out of the heat for now. I'm ready for some stable winter weather.

message 2935: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Rose Ann, Love, Rosie is a nicefluff read. The e-mail/letter format makes for a quick read. I enjoyed it.

message 2936: by [deleted user] (new)

Me too, Logan. I read an article that predicts a cooler than normal winter for the southwest. Perhaps even a chance for..dare I say it...snow?

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I'm still waiting for our summer to start :o(

message 2938: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments Around here the weather is already kinda like fallish. I fear that we are going to have a rough winter...and thats quite unfortunate.

message 2939: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments It's around 85 but the humidity is driving me insane! But in the evenings on the porch, its perfect reading weather.

message 2940: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Our evenings have been getting a bit cooler which is nice. I can't wait for fall.

btw, I started Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris last night.
So far so good.

message 2941: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments It's funny Jesse, Tucson supposedly never gets snow. Yet for the three winters we've lived here we've awoken to snow on the ground at least one day every year. It never lasts past nine a.m. but still...

message 2942: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Logan - Oscar Wao is going really well. I think you will really enjoy it. The Spanglish really adds a lot to the story!

message 2943: by [deleted user] (new)

Logan, I am growing to love the winter but I like the fall to ween me into the colder weather. I have begun to notice traits in myself over the past few years that seem to change with the seasons.

(All the while hoping you enjoy Cider House)

message 2944: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Charity, I am going to start OSCAR WAO as soon as I finish FRACTURED (which is a quick easy read). I am very excited to hear you loving it.

message 2945: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Huzzah! Ann, I hope you like it.

message 2946: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Ok, so since you are all talking about weather.. would you beleive that our trees here are starting to change color ALREADY??!! I am soo pissed about it! Its from all the chilly nights we have been having I think... The trees are confused and seem to think that its fall now.... Its too soon!!!

message 2947: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (courtneyclift) THE GARDEN OF LAST DAYS by Andre Dubus III and I'm struggling. Any one else read this to the end and like it?

Peace,
C

message 2948: by Kendall (new)

Kendall (kendalln) I just finished The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. Highly, highly recommended. Don't let the title fool you, it's not horror. It's a love story, a life changing story, a story within a story, it's just wonderful.

Rose Ann~ I read The Shack too cause it had all these great reviews and I feel the same way you do. Actually I didnt even finish it, I just skimmed to the end to see what happened. Strange book.

message 2949: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments OK Everyone.
I have started A Tale of Two Cities.
So far, it's going OK.
I have found a website that does chapter summaries. I read a chapter and then go to the summary just to make sure I am understanding everything. The language is quite different.
So far, so good.
I'm on Chapter 6..
I'll keep you posted. It is still real early in the story to really make any comments yet.
Keep cheering for me...

message 2950: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Kellie..can you post the link to the website?
sounds like it will come in handy.
