Finished the audiobook version of The Double Comfort Safari Club by Alexander McCall Smith – 4****Book on CD narrated by Lisette Lecat. In this 11th installment in the popular No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, we find Mma Precious Ramotswe faced once again with some people who are behaving very badly. What I particularly love about this series is the way Smith depicts Botswana – the land, the culture and the people.

I really enjoyed the book. Kitty becomes a better person as she matures.
I just started Denise Mina's
Garnethill - I've read another of her books before and they are quite gritty. There are a lot of good reviews of this book, so I hope I enjoy it.
I am currently reading L.A. Confidential and The Phantom of the Opera and after finally finishing Moby-Dick everything is light reading.
Finished up The First prophet and Light on Snow just last night. The other 2 I half started will take me awhile to finish. A kid borrowed Son and it may never return which is kinda okay and the Pecular Children is a little weird for my taste.
I'm reading Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann. About 50 pages and loving it. Finished reading the Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout, The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin and The Last Telegram by Liz Trenow. Loved them all.
Right now reading Where Are the Children? by Mary Higgins Clark. Right now is mean I just pick it up and prepared to read in commuter tomorrow, so it's mean I will finish this book already tomorrow, base on not big volume. Meanwhile, listening Matched series on my mp3 player, and I can say it's too much YA for my not YA already age.... Not really in this book. And about to get from library Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, can't wait, because I really liked Gone Girl

It's my favorite book by Maugham - Painted veil. I even put one for votes for monthly reading. Very enjable book. Did you see a movie? with Edward Norton? Not bad movie at all

Love Edward Norton, though, so I may have to look this one up.

I am reading (trying to read) A Dance With Dragons. I may have overloaded last month reading 8 books, because I want to read it but I am not getting it done very fast. I have also started Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and am having the same problem...just stalling out.
I gave up on The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson about half way through and am now reading The Red House by Mark Haddon.

So far, it is really quite powerful!! I will phrase it this way, and hope not to be offensive, but it is basically about when a parent discovers that their child is a dirtbag. Plain and simple. There is a very flawed, sympathetic, likeable narrator. I am liking it very much. I must be about halfway thru now.

THere you go! Who says you can't judge a book by its cover?!?
Jocelyne wrote: "Thank you, Cindy, for the feedback."Oh you are very welcome. It is quite good. Definitely worth a read. I had already heard many good things about it. I am not disappointed.
I been reading The Band of Gypsies, a little sex, a little romance and...oh yes, terrorists! I just started The Kalahari Typing School for Men today.
I just finished Michael Connelly's The Black Box, which was excellent as Connelly's books always are. Now starting Speaking from Among the Bones by Alan Bradley.
I finished The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver and next will read The Birth House by Ami McKay.

They are too young to know but the cover has George Clooney on it! :-)

Well then, with Clooney on the cover, I am sure that you did not need much convincing!

I love McAll Smith's books. I must have read ten of them and was never disappointed. His prose is spare and limpid and his portrayal of characters so sharp and witty.
Finished listening to the audio of A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley – 4**** Audio book performed wonderfully by Jayne Entwistle. Third in a series, and I’m still in love with Flavia de Luce and her indomitable spirit, not to mention her ability to lie through her teeth.

Hello! Just finished reading the 3rd book in the Katherine Katt series. The whole series is hilarious and action packed. Trying to let my brain dwell on how to write up my review. ;)
I am reading Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Story of Love and Resistance by Jack Sutin and When I Fell from the Sky: The True Story of One Woman's Miraculous Survival by Juliane Koepcke. The second book is my first disaster/survival story and it tells the story about one woman who was in an airplane when it got struck by lightning in the middle of the jungle and then she fell from mid-air onto the ground. It reminds me of the air France flight that was also struck by lightning and exploded over the ocean, and one person survived and she had been stranded there for a few days. Btw, did anyone else have trouble getting onto goodreads last night? I tried but the page wouldn't load but other pages were fine. I'm just wondering, thanks.

Finished the audio of Pearl S Buck’s The Good Earth (performed by Anthony Heald) – 5*****This is an epic tale of the peasant farmer Wang Lung and his family. Buck writes in a very simple style, with few complex sentences, and only enough description to set the scene. The result is a story that the reader experiences along with the characters, whose many facets are revealed through their thoughts and actions over the years.

I've just started reading 'it' by Stephen King and so far I love it! It does seem to be very drawn out, and a massive 1090 pages but I can't wait to see how it turns out!
I am still reading The Emperor of All Maladies (about halfway through) and am finding it very interesting. It is a biography of cancer and is written for the lay person.
Finished reading The Color of Lightning: A Novel by Paulette Jiles – 3*** Decent historical fiction about a former slave and his family who made their way to northern Texas circa 1863. More than just a western, it’s a story of one man’s courage and devotion to his family.

Have you read 'Of Human Bondage' by S. Maugham. Truly a great book. I read a few others after I stumbled on that one, including Painted Veil. They're all very good, but Human Bondage is standout.
The Other Side of the Bridge by Mary Lawson. It is one of my many Goodwill picks. Only on Chapter 2 but a good read so far. Takes place in rural Canada during the 1930s and 1950s (colliding story lines).
I finished Monster Hunter Vendetta. It was non-stop action. Now I'm going to continue with Monster Hunter Alpha.

I'm currently reading The Keeper of Lost Causes and really enjoying the way the author weaves the tale from past/"present" viewpoints.

In Kitty Fane, Maugham gives us a “heroine” who is so flawed, so unlikeable, so self-centered, shallow and obtuse … and yet … over the course of the novel she gains insight, and despite some stumbles comes to a new realization of how her life MIGHT be different.
