I'm going to start

I have read several of Sara Waters' books and have liked them very much. I like the way she writes. The subject was a different one for me but it was very well written and I enjoyed reading it. I'll have to look for more of her books.
Right now I'm reading a book that's a continuation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Jane Rochester. I was rather skeptical of these "continuation of" type books but I am enjoying this book and it is written in Charlotte Bronte's voice so far.
Claire wrote: "I am about halfway through Gone Girl and I can't put it down. Wow is all I can say, what a ride."Claire, I suggested this for my book club's October book, and I can't wait to start in. Glad to hear it's living up to all the buzz!
I just finished Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy by Lisa See. They are best read back-to-back. Found the historical and cultural information fascinating. I believe that ultimately it is a story about love, particularly about a mother's love for her daughter. I preferred the first book (Shanghai Girls), but it was clearly written with a sequel in mind, leading you to inevitably read the second. I highly recommend them, but they are not for the faint of heart.

Aimee: Stay with the Poisonwood Bible--it is one of the best books I have ever read. It has stayed with me for years. Thanks you for the Chabon suggestion!
Yesterday I finished reading
by John Steinbeck. It's an extremely short but nevertheless fantastic novel. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The ending is so incredibly moving that I cried while reading it. I truly can't recommend this novel enough. John Steinbeck is an excellent author (and one of my favourite writers)! Today I've started reading
by Jay Asher.

Hope your bookclub enjoys Gone Girl, Julie. I am just about finished and am looking forward to seeing what happens!

Thanks, Jess! Almost finished, about 100 more pages to go.
Just finished reading Paul Tough's new book called 'How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character'. The book explores the character traits that lead to success, and how we can cultivate them in young people. It's a game changer. I've written an executive summary of the book available here:http://newbooksinbrief.wordpress.com/...

Patricia wrote: "I've started The Wives of Henry Oades by Johanna Moran."Patricia, Are you enjoying The Wives of Henry Oades: A Novel? I did enjoy the story. Please share your thoughts!
Right now, I'm reading The Short Novels: Tortilla Flat/The Moon is Down/The Red Pony/Of Mice & Men/Cannery Row/The Pearl by John Steinbeck. I'm working my way through Tortilla Flat currently. I'm also reading The Antietam Campaign by John Cannan.
I'm reading Yonder Stands Your Orphan by Barry Hannah. Good book.Next on the list is Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I've thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail so it will be interesting to compare experiences.
I'm rading The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories and watching (didnt finished yesterday) Norwegian Wood(based on novel by Haruki Murakami) movie, Japaneese, with English subtitles
I'm about halfway through A Visit from the Goon Squad. I really like it sometimes, really don't others. Almost done with The Latest Answers to the Oldest Questions: A Philosophical Adventure with the World's Greatest Thinkers. I haven't read any philosophy since college and this one's fun!
I'm reading, and teaching tomorrow, two wonderfully strange and comic stories by Donald Barthelme, both set in elementary classrooms but about so much more: "The School" and "Me and Miss Mandible." I also highly recommend the anthologies they can be found in: You've Got To Read This (out of print but available) and the relatively recent Blue Collar, White Collar, No Collar.
I finished The Wives of Henry Oades: A Novel by Johanna Moran. Very interesting premise but I was not blown away by the book. Ultimately I thought the characters fell flat....Next onto Insurgent by Veronica Roth.
I'm now onto Big Fish!! The movie is one of my favorites and I cannot believe I never realized there was a book until it caught my eye while out last night.
Started reading Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon yesterday. So far, so good. Initial impression, it reminds me of some of Tom Wolfe's novels like "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "A Man in Full."
I finished reading
by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler earlier today. It's just an young adult romance but it's very entertaining and funny. I loved all the 1990's nostalgia!Next I'm going to start reading a Stephanie Plum book:
by Janet Evanovich.
I started
. I picked it up @ the library thinking it was a sequel to Graceling which I really liked. It's only a companion to it. I'm not liking it as well as I did Graceling, but since I'm in the early stages of the book I'm hoping it will get better.
Just finished Shadow Tag by Louise Erdrich. She writes beautifully, and here draws amazingly vivid characters. I was disappointed in the end, however. The book jacket promised "redemption" after incredible conflict - but for me, it just never arrived. Still think it's worth the read for Erdrich's prose.
Yuliya wrote: "I1Q84 by Haruki Murakami"Me too. How far are you and what do you think? Ever read any other Murakami?

I'll have to read it soon and see what I think of the ending.
Starting LITTLE BEE by Chris Cleave - Yikes, the man can WRITE! Startled by his emotional depth right from page 1.
I finished Tortilla Flat (Steinbeck) yesterday, and I've moved onto The Red Pony. I've enjoyed this collection so much so far.
