I just finished Fire Season by Jon Loomis. It was a short, light read, but still carried enough weight to be worth the time. Now I'm reading Calico Joe by John Grisham. I'm always happy to have Grisham step away from his usual legal novels. So far, I'm really enjoying this baseball story.
Janny wrote: "I just finished Stormy Weather and The Snow Child, both for my local book club.Janny, what did you think of "The Snow Child". I enjoyed it when I read it.
I just finished a novel called : "The Pursuit of Cool" by Robb Skidmore. I really got caught up in it and enjoyed it. The characters were really funny and engaging. It is set at this college during the 1980s and there is a lot of pop culture in it. This guy is a really talented writer and it's his first novel.
You guys should check it out.

Thanks for the recommendations! I think I'll add a few of the suggestions to my "to read" list! I just started reading "The Hobbit" (before the movie comes out)and "Middlesex," and am enjoying both.
I finished the 3rd book in the Maeve Kerrigan series The Last Girl by Jane Casey last night - I really enjoyed this novel and I can't wait till the next one! Jane Casey is becoming one of my favourite crime authors. This morning, I began reading One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf.
Just finished reading David K. Randall's new book called 'Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep'. It was superb. The book takes a look at the science behind pretty well every facet of sleep you can think of from sleep deprivation, to natural sleep patterns (and how it changes over the course of a lifetime), to putting your kids to bed, to dreaming, to sleepwalking (and the bizarre phenomenon of committing crime while sleepwalking), to insomnia, to just plain getting a better night's sleep. Fascinating stuff. I've written an executive summary of the book available at newbooksinbrief.wordpress.comCheers,
Aaron
I'm starting to read the Soul Thief by Cecelia Holland tomorrow, reading Damned by Joesph Sweet and am enjoying it so far.
I'm reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which is a mid-life quest novel. It's been alternately sad and uplifting but overall very moving.

Hi, Dorie:I was glad to read your post about this book, because it was a book I was considering. After finishing a book by Clive Barker (good but creepy), I need something uplifting. I will add your book to my list.
I finished reading
by Heather Gudenkauf yesterday - It's a brilliant novel. I couldn't put it down! I honestly couldn't recommend it highly enough. Now I'm about to start the 9th book in the Stephanie Plum series
by Janet Evanovich.
I've just finished Tiffany Trent's take on steampunk, "The Unnaturalists", and I'm now due to start on "Gone Girl".
I just finished
by Camilla Lackberg, the second in her series and another very enjoyable read. I'm now about to start
, #1 in the Wine Country series Ellen Crosby. Does anyone have an opinion on this series.
I finished The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. An interesting look at Ernest Hemmingway told through the perspective of his first wife. Reminded me a lot of Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. Brooding artists, multiple wives.....Now I'm reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Came recommended by my brother.

I just finished both
and
I loved both. They had me crying and laughing. Reading

I hear ya. It took me a long time before I finally decided it was the right time. I was considering another reread of The Hobbit and thought why not start The Fire and Ice Series instead.

I love Heather Gudenkaug, she has yet to write a book that I haven't loved. If you have not read her other books:
or
, I would recommend them. Plus, I like the fact she lives in my state, Iowa, and has done a number of Author Skype visits for libraries, etc.

I'm reading Eclipse of the Twilight series in hardcopy (don't judge...I'm came late into this...I got suckered into it against my will!!!)And Ice Cold by Tess Gerritsen (the US name is different but it's novel no 9 in the series anyways)
I'm halfway through Gone Girl
and there isn't one of these characters I would want in my life. I'm enjoying the book, and they're holding my interest, but these people are basketcases from the starting bell on, and more than once I've asked "what in god's name do you SEE in him/her?" about just about every one.

I'm reading Sea of Poppies and struggling to get through it. I think I am going to have to put this one away for awhile. I have I Claudius waiting on my bedside table that I am going to start tonight.

After I finish "The Lucky One," whenever that is, I plan to read a book by my good friend, Josh Voyles. His book is called "Sliver." After that, I have about 20 books that I have backlogged. I have a lot of catching up to do, don't I? :)
Becuase the book arrived on my desk before closing yesterday, I started reading After the Fog. I am finding this book hard to put down.
Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story: A Life of David Foster Wallace .It's the new biography of David Foster Wallace.
I've finished the 9th book in the Stephanie Plum series (and the best one so far)
by Janet Evanovich. Now I'm reading
by Donald McCaig. It's Gone With the Wind from Rhett Butler's point of view.
