tiasreads I was reading Fragile, but couldn't finish. The MC was whiney and self-absorbed. So, I'm moving on to Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.

Karen M | 1956 comments I'm a couple of hundred pages into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, finally forced myself to read the final book. Hate seeing the series end. I'm also reading a strange little book called The Gorge, murders, cults, rattlesnakes, evil spirits, can't wait see what the heck the author comes up with next! LOL

Paula | 1098 comments I'm reading The Torture Doctor by David Franke . It's been pretty good so far, the story of H. H. Holmes.

This is a GREAT book and you might want to watch the DVD when finished. Let me know what you think when finished.

Eventually if this Asian themed book was enjoyable for you I'd read Mao's Last Dancer. This is based on a true story and didn't realize it was a book until I saw the DVD. Funny thing is I found out about this movie as a coming attraction on another DVD so you never know where book suggestions might pop up from.

I just finished “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan week or so ago, and I liked this book very much....

Now I'm reading

Mice by Gordon Reeceit's very scary and impressive sad, it's about girls school bulling and when you have a child in school it's really touch you felling and scared the hell of you to don't happened something like that to anybody and especially you child

message 26608: by Lis (new)

Lis (lazyseagull) Finished The Wise Man's Fear-- IMHO, I found it better than The Name of the Wind, for some strange reason. Maybe I wasn't as impressed by the first, or something. Either way, I still love both of them.

I'm starting Atonement, an entirely different genre.

Let us know what you think, Ann. I'm reading 77 Shadow Street as well. I think this may be my first Dean Koontz book that I've read, so I have nothing to compare it with (from his previous novels). Can anyone recommend any other good books by Koontz?

message 26610: by Alex (new)

Alex Kudera | 49 comments The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon and Death on the Installment Plan by Celine (sort of marooned in the latter and the former is for school). I began Funny Man by John Warner, too. Do I pass?

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I'm reading One Day by David Nicholls. I'm about half way through and it's really holding my interest so far.

message 26612: by Denise (new)

Denise (sportygirl83) | 2 comments I am currently reading Peony in Love by Lisa See and I plan on reading The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell next. I just finished The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and I wasn't as impressed with it as I thought I would be. I think because it has been praised all over the world I was expecting something more.

message 26613: by Scott (new)

Scott | 257 comments Finished A Dirty Job yesterday and then started Bad Moon Rising. This is the final installment of the Pine Deep Trilogy.

message 26614: by Peter (new)

Peter | 3 comments I'm reading Jane Addams' Twenty Years at Hull-House, her memoir of the first two decades of her pioneering settlement house/social service institution in Chicago. The prose is a bit dense at times (not uncommon for 1910) but the story is quite interesting. This will probably take me through this month, and right up to my annual Irish March, where I will probably read nothing but William Trevor - one of my favorite writers.

message 26615: by Betsy (last edited Feb 14, 2012 12:38PM) (new)

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 511 comments Finished The Girl Who would speak for the Dead, which I found very interesting. It basically fictionalizes the growth of Spiritualism in the US. I was surprized to see its' only rated 3 and a tiny fraction more of Stars. I also finished Incredibly Loud and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (bet I switched my adjectives) which I also thought was fantastic. I thought Foer's voice fit the character of Oskar well.

message 26616: by Michael (new)

Michael (book_nerd1991) I just finished The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper , exceptionally written, love the characters and how consistent the story was. Highly recommended!

I am about to begin The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf

I LOVED One Day. It is one of my favorite books. The movie is not as good, but still worth seeing. Enjoy!

Olivia (olivia_boler) | 26 comments I'm currently reading Perfect on Paper: The (Mis)Adventures of Waverly Bryson, which is a fun, smartly written chick lit novel. And I'd like to mention my new novel, The Flower Bowl Spell. It's got urban witches, fairies, snappy dialog, rock and roll, and characters with murderous intentions. Check it out, and thank you!

Hey guys.. Been listening to Castle on audio this week. Very strange book.. and the narrator is weird.

Just started reading Under the Poppy. This sounds really good, and so far it's off to a good start. It's set in brothel during the war, there's a sort of love triangle between the two owners and a puppeteer....

message 26627: by Beth (new)

Beth I just finished reading Defending Jacob: A Novel Defending Jacob A Novel by William Landay . This is a excellent courtroom drama mystery. It starts slowly, drawing you in like an anaconda systematically squeezing its victim. By the time you reach the middle, you are trapped, the book stuck to your hands as the air is squeezed out of you. The story keeps changing as surprising revelations are casually dropped in your lap until you read the last two scenes with your mouth hanging open, finishing with a satisfying "Whoosh" for your last breath. Then the book lives with your for days afterward as you replay scenes in your mind. For me, that's what indicates a book deserves 5 stars. I highly recommend it!

Karen M | 1956 comments Still slowly, on purpose, reading the final Harry Potter but I am also reading a sweet little book called A King in a Court of Fools about five siblings growing up in middle class suburbia. So many things mentioned are right out of my own childhood. And today I received the email from the digital library, One Day is ready for pick up!!

message 26629: by Chamie (new)

message 26634: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads I just finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and was totally underwhelmed. I didn't hate it, it was just kind of... meh. I also read Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half with America's Cheapest Family: Includes So Many Innovative Strategies You Won't Have to Cut Coupons, which was extremely informative. Not sure what I'll read next.

message 26635: by Patty (new)

Patty I'm currently reading "1000 autumns of Jacob de Zoet" and "Macbeth". I'm halfway through the first one, and I can't decide whether I like it or not... As to the second, I wish I could just close my eyes to all the blood!

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments Moby-Dick - finally - it was on my mental list to read. I knew what is about, I knew famous first lines..... Just didn't read it (it was not so popular like in U.S.A and was not in any school/college programs in country there I'm from). It's apparently very long story! so far I liked it very much!

Ted Magnuson (tedmagnuson) | 7 comments Back To Work: Why We Need Smart Government For A Strong EconomyI just picked this one up. Bill Clinton has come back from his humanitarian work to author this political book. His comments on "what politicans say and what they" do are right on the money. We need more public figures who say what they mean and mean what they say.

message 26643: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (CassieWinters) I have been reading a LOT of books about the Holocaust because of my class that I am in this semester about this. I have read within the last two weeks time frame The Reader, Holocaust Poetry, Survival in Auschwitz, Maus I: My Father Bleeds History, and Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began. This just names the Holocaust books that I have read this month thus far. I am moving onto the book Ross Poldark next so that I have something not related to the Holocaust. :-)

I absolutely "love" the Holocaust. And by love, I mean that it interests and fascinates me; I never knew how to express that withouth sounding psychotic. I devour anything about the Holocaust and mostly about WWII in general, but have missed some of the ones you mentioned, will be adding them to my list. Thanks for sharing!
