Debsp | 134 comments I am halfway through The Alchemyst and I am also reading Explosive Eighteen. And of course today the library e-mailed me that Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is available for check out! Yikes! I might have to put the other two on hold while I read my library book.

message 26305: by Danna (new)

Danna I have finished Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead this morning and went on to keep reading Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore , which seems to be very good, maybe even one of my best reads! I guess it may even get a 5 stars rating from me. I like the feminst strong heroine concept thing.

I've read Hotel du Lac which I can highly recommend. I'll have to add The Rules of Engagement to my wish list.

Antoine Devine (antoinemauricedevine) | 39 comments Finally getting around to Moneyball. I had a chance to be an extra in the movie, which would have been a big thrill since I'm an A's fan, but they cancelled filming for scenes in Phoenix. Moneyball The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis

message 26309: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (CassieWinters) As I just finished Christopher Pike's The Last Vampire I decided to start reading a book that I have heard recommended by a lot of people called The Hunger Games. So far I am really enjoying it. Hard to put it down actually. I keep wanting to know what is going to happen next. After I am finished my partner is actually going to read it as well cause I am enjoying it that much.

Linda Parks (firesidelinda) | 5 comments Just finished Fracture by Megan Miranda ~ http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/95... ~ Absolutely wonderful! I was totally taken by the story, it's depth and how well everything held together until the final page... immediately and truly impressed with Megan's writing style. Her storytelling and characters definitely put me in mind of Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall (HUGE compliment!) so I look forward to following this new author in the years ahead!

I enjoyed Push but the movie did pack more of an emotional punch. Have you read The Kid, her latest book? I can't get it to link up here but if you have, I'd love to hear what you think. It's one I'd like to read but haven't gotten to yet.

I was the opposite of you Michael. I couldn't stomach the movie Precious, but loved Push. Push was more real and gritty than the movie. I feel that the movie cut out what the book was really about. It was about the struggle of this girl to be better than she was and it was reflected better in the book because of the writing style and the word choices. You didn't get all of that from the movie, at least not for me.

message 26318: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments I felt the way the book was written, with all the spelling and grammar mistakes, bogged down the story. The movie removed that gimmick/roadblock for me.

message 26319: by Ted (new)

Ted Magnuson (tedmagnuson) | 7 comments 11/22/63 by Stephen King; A very heavy book, some 700 pages long. Not exclusively about the assassination...involves time travel and alternate history. Overwhelming question on finishing the book:
Where does the Yellow Card man come from and what duties do his employers expect him to do?

Not sure what I'm going to read after that. Has anyone read 1Q84 yet? I'm leaning towards that one or The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister.

The grammar I can overlook cause I understood the author`s intention, but I did not care about precious at all. I know that was a hurting child, but she was not someone that I can sympathize with. In the movie, I felt the connection between precious and her school teacher. In contrast,in the book, I did not feel any connection, cause it was lazy writings and inconsistent to me.

I think I went into the book with too high of expectations and ended up thinking that it was just okay. Most of my friends who've read it gave 4 or 5 stars. I stuck with 3.

message 26336: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads I just finished Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor. It was a fun and fast read. A lot of Jane Austen fan fiction just plain stinks, but I'm not too much of a Jane purist to enjoy well-written fan fiction. Can't wait for the next one!

I also finished Night Road, which was intense, but good. I can't decide what to read next, possibly The Wedding Dress.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Every now and then I pick up several books at once and find in some way they intersect. At the moment I'm reading Evenings With Cary Grant: Recollections in His Own Words and by Those Who Knew Him Best Evenings With Cary Grant Recollections in His Own Words and by Those Who Knew Him Best by Nancy Nelson and Once Upon a Time Behind the Fairy Tale of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier by J. Randy Taraborrelli Once Upon a Time: Behind the Fairy Tale of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier where the connection between the two is obvious. I find I'm also drawn to start Fellow Travelers Fellow Travelers by Thomas Mallon which if I recall what I read about it correctly is also about the 1950s. Hoping to make some headway into that tonight so we'll see.

I loved "Valley of the Dolls" when I read it years ago. There is also a movie if you're interested. There is also a sequel to Valley, something with Sparrows in the title. It was pretty good too but not as good as Valley imo.

message 26349: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments It was "Shadow of the Dolls" Jacqueline Susann's Shadow of the Dolls by Rae Lawrence (I knew it had an "S" in the title) LOL and I thought it was pretty good. Susann had started the draft for it before she died and this Rae (I forget her last name now) finished it. I liked that it told us what happened to the characters later in life.
