The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Lori / Jesse

I struggles through Outer Dark too and I think it was also cos I was comparing it to The Road. It was incredibly dark and weird but for some reason his writing compells me to keep reading. I only gave it 2 stars though as for me it was Ok but not great (yet, I kept getting drawn back). I will certainly be reading more of his soon though.

Lori, I feel the need for more Saramago too. I have struggled to like a book so much since Blindness and I think I need a Saramago fix shortly. I was planning on Seeing for next week in the week before I start my new job and can devote a good solid day or two to him.

I have read A Tree Grow's in Brooklyn at least 15 times. It's one of my all time favorites also. (I'm Angela; new to the group).

message 2503: by [deleted user] (new)

I am still reading too much at once. About half way through I-Robot. I don't know didn't like it then liked it now hit another part of the book not liking it. Not at all like the movie.

Also reading The Book of Lost things Love it! I am so glad I am in this book group!

Started Twilight not moving quickly through, Reading Treasure Island to my little one going slowly on that one but really enjoy it.

Basically haven't picked up Marie Antionette in about a week, don't like it but I will get through it by the end of the year.

message 2504: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Right now I'm just reading fluff because I'm taking an MBA course and have enough on my plate. My current book is The Gift by Julie Garwood. It's not bad for a romance novel.

message 2505: by Angela (new)

Angela | 64 comments I know how you feel; when I was in grad school, I read lots of chick lit and lighter side books. I just began America America. Has anyone else read it yet? I'm curious to know what others think...

message 2506: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailwerner) I got sucked in to the Twilight series - MAN those books are addicting! I gotta get back to some more ...er... intellectual lit after I wrap these up. Until then, I can't stop!

(and BTW, I'm Gail - also new to the group. So far, I love this site - and I'm even more motivated than ever to pick up A Tree Grows ... after hearing all the wonderful things said on here)

message 2507: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Welcome Gail
I am in the midst of Twilight myself.
It's not bad.

message 2508: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Jen - the cabin idea sounds so fantastic, I can just imagine it, we'd all have a blast and you know what, maybe not get as much reading done as we think we would, we'd be having too much fun, therefore cabin stay would have to be for at least 2 weeks!

message 2509: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I'm reading This Charming Man by Marian Keyes. Just picked it up a couple days ago, so I'm not too far in yet, but I'm enjoying it so far. I love her writing.

My hubby and I are also reading The Historian together, and it's awesome.

message 2510: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I've got The Historian on my shelf to read, great to hear you're liking it, Allison.

message 2511: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Thanks Mandy. I hope you like it too when you get to it. :)

Hey Gail!
Welcome... and this group is great motivation for fellow readers!

message 2513: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) I finished Edgar Sawtelle (sooo good!) and am about 70 pages into Book of Lost Things. So far, so good!

message 2514: by Sharee (new)

Sharee | 53 comments I just finished reading Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. If you've read the previous three, this one will answer all your unanswered questions! :) Loved it!

message 2515: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) Still haven't read much of Bloody Mary since this weekend. It was busy then i'm sucked in watching Swimming, and gymnastics.

message 2516: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (jmagnesi) | 12 comments The Mermaid chair, by Sue Monk. Good so far, but I almost put it down after the first few chapters and ditched it, but it gets better!

message 2517: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I couldn't hold myself back any longer...
Sorry guys, I did not like the Historian. It was way to long and was somewhat boring. Maybe because I'm not into the vampire thing (Oh yeah, but I'm now reading Twilight?)
It was definitely researched to the max and it does have a lot of interesting stuff about Vlad the Impaler and Romania.....just not my cup of tea.

Mermaid Chair--a disappointment for me. Somewhat unrealistic. I liked Secret Life of Bees better.

Now, I am considering putting a Tree Grows on my "Books Want to Read List" since so many of you have such high praise for it.
I heard about The Road by McCarthy in my speed reading class. Want to read that one day.

Lori, tell me about Blindness....

message 2518: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 13, 2008 04:56AM) (new)

I liked The Historian but I did find parts of it very slow. I was more intrigued by the flashback portions of the book than the in the present portions. The present seemed to be filler material to get the characters from point a to point b.

It is worth noting, though, that Vlad the Impaler had a HUGE.....library.

message 2519: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I'm still plodding through Inkheart. I'm enjoying it, it's just that it's not pulling me to read it more... It's taken me 3 days to get through 160ish pages... but I don't want to give up because it's an interesting story. I just wish it was grabbing me more.

message 2520: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Just finished Surfacing by Margaret Atwood - I was very disappointed. Next I am going to start Edgar Sawtelle.

message 2521: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Jen:

Started out I was going to read just one book (call me crazy, yes I did say just one). I am up to five because every time I open one of these emails, I find four more books, not only have I never heard of, but when I check them out, they sound like my kind of read. I may need therapy.

message 2522: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Dietmar,

Trying hard is good, very good. Soooooooo, since joining this group, instead of buying a book here and there, I have bought 12 books in the last few weeks and I slipped in a library book to boot.

Would love to go back to some of the classics that are still sitting on my bookshelf from college, but so many new books, so little time.

I know most of you have already seen that I am reading The Last Jihad. Even though we already know the history of 9-11, this one is a real page turner. Would recommend as an 8 on a scale of 10.

message 2523: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard Breaking Dawn (last book in the Twilight series), Stephanie Meyer

Summer Knight (book 4 in the Dresden Files series), Jim Butcher - put this down to read Breaking Dawn!

One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez

I'm also sporadically reading The Other End of the Leash because we're getting a puppy in a couple of months.

message 2524: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Cheri,
I am impressed that you are reading 100 Years with other books. While I LOVE LOVE LOVED that book, it was a bit hard to keep things together with just that book going.

message 2525: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard It's not easy! It's wonderful to read but it definitely takes concentration. I only read it before bed — I can't read it on the commuter train, which is where I do most of my reading.

message 2526: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments OOH puppy...do you know what kind your getting (as you can tell by my pic I like dogs...good thing as my family (including my 2) has 9 of them).

message 2527: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard Yes, we're getting an Australian Labradoodle! Sounds silly I know but they are non-shedding and do not aggravate allergies — my husband is extremely allergic & we already have 1 fur-ball (a cat). I usually like making him miserable (j.k.), but I would feel really guilty if he couldn't breathe in our house.

message 2528: by Christina (new)

Christina (boolovey) | 1 comments Hi! I'm new to this group. Most of my books I get from the library and I currently am having about 20 sent to me and I'm in the middle of reading three. I am loving The outlaw demon wails by Kim Harrison (LOVE her series), The Magician by Michael Scott (second book after The Alchemyst) and Breaking Dawn (seriously I have loved the entire series and I'm waiting for the Host to come in at the library.

Kellie... Blindness is my favorite novel. Check out my review on it. Saramago is not the easiest man to read, but he weaves such a haunting story.... It shows humanity and government at its worst.

message 2530: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard Christina - The Host is amazing!! I love the Twilight books as well, but the Host is a different caliber all together. Definitely snag it from the library as soon as it's available!

message 2531: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Blindness is a great book, Kellie. It is really a "must read" at some point.

message 2532: by Sharee (last edited Aug 13, 2008 11:12AM) (new)

Sharee | 53 comments Kirsty, I'm glad I'm not the only one who had a hard time plodding through Inkheart. I had a hard time with Inkspell, too, but the slight love story in it made it a bit easier... (hmmm. Am I getting those two mixed up? *sigh* Oh well.)

I'm giving Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series another go at present. I read up to book five, but gave them up several years ago. We'll see how that goes...

message 2533: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Currently reading Cocaine Nights by J.G. Ballard for a group read. Interesting so far.

I'll probably start The Book Thief by the end of the week.

message 2534: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Charity, based on the struggle you've been having getting into the Ballard book I'm semi-relieved to have passed on that selection this month. I'd be interested in reading Crash at some point, but will put off Cocaine Nights as long as possible now.

message 2535: by Cookiesue9x (new)

Cookiesue9x (cookiesue) Hi Back to you Leppaluoto, My remembrance of this book was the surprise of finding "white trash "lived in places as exotic to me (being a native Texan)as Egypt, Maine.

message 2536: by Macy (new)

Macy | 155 comments I've got Cocaine Nights on hold at the library, not sure if I'll be able to get to it this month though. Maybe I'll just be late for the 1001 group! Let us know how it goes, Charity.

message 2537: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Sure thing. :-)

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I've just finished The Myth of You and Me by Leah Stewart. I really enjoyed it.

What shall I read next?

The Art of Racing in the Rain?
Transgressions?
Snow?
The Point of Rescue?
Heart Shaped Box?

Help me.

message 2539: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle I just finished The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster and now have started The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. Anyone read this?

message 2540: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Rachelle, how did you like Book of Illusions? It's been referenced in a number of books I've read lately and think I'm going to have to pick it up soon.

I read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle a couple of months ago and I'm still not sure what I think of it. I really enjoyed it, it's remarkably well-written and Murakami is a highly imaginitive author. Still, there are parts that dragged worse than just about anything I've ever read. Overall, I'm going to have to go with "I liked it" just based on how much time I've spent thinking about it after putting it down.

message 2541: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Logan beat me to it...I was also about to ask about The Book of Illusions. I guess everyone is gearing up for the 1001 Books September group read. :-)

message 2542: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I started Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix this afternoon. I'm really looking forward to it because it's the first Harry Potter book in the series that I haven't read! Anyone else out there that has read it? Any thoughts?

message 2543: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Jess, Order of the Phoenix is still, to this day, my very favorite of the Potter novels! I think it's one of the more complex and meaty of the series, and I just get so easily lost in it! How I envy you as a first time reader of the book!

message 2544: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Ditto all that JT said. Great book!

message 2545: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle I think I liked it. I related to the emotions running through it but as a whole it had a lot of "fluff" so to speak. It was well written, though and kept me turning the pages to find out the ending.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Would you all hate me if I admited to never having read ANY of the Harry Potter books?

message 2547: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Boof, im right there with you. Never read one of them....

message 2548: by [deleted user] (new)

I've read the first three. My wife, who does not read regularly, devoured all seven.

message 2549: by [deleted user] (new)

I certainly enjoyed the first three but I never developed a full case of Potter-fever.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Yay, Lori, I thought I was the only one!
