Betsy (mistymtladi) | 511 comments Hmm. the above post was all ready on my screen,so I pushed post to get a blank square. I guess I should have erased it,but then I didn't write it???? Since I been here last- back in late June sometime, I read about 14 books. Its'summer vacation I can read non-stop and often do.
One of the books I read was Crooked letter Crooked Letter and while I'll agree the plot was predictable the characters were outstanding. I found myself talking to them as if they could actually hear me .

message 25306: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (marblepdck) | 17 comments Betsy, I really enjoyed Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter too. Yes it was very predictable (especially the 'brothers'), but the charecters were so well developed that I didnt care.

message 25307: by Ioana (new)

Ioana After Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin (disturbing and very informative, but way too long abd somewhat repetitive) I needed something totally different. So I am reading A Cure to Die For: A Medical Thriller now. An easy, fast read that I really enjoy.

message 25308: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads I just finished The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette and it was... not awful. It was good enough to finish, but not something I'd want to read again. And now, shockingly, I have no more books in my house that I have not read. That's a sad state of affairs!!

message 25309: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) The Long Walk was excellent. King can make even walking seem like a terrifying experience.

Next I'm going to pick up The Catcher in the Rye . Believe it or not, I've never read it before and I'm pushing 25.

message 25311: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ldk1970) I'm reading The Best Laid Plans. It's funny and has stimulated my interest in politics, but I can't help but copy-edit it as I read!

message 25312: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1956 comments I'm reading a book I won, Freedom's Sword, and it's a really good historical novel. I'm also reading Heart Trouble, love this series.

that is amazing. I don't know what I'd do if there wasn't a single book in my house that I hadn't read...

message 25316: by Jane (new)

Jane | 27 comments Recently finished State of Wonder by Ann Patchett and thought it was great... SO much to ponder upon finishing that one.

Now I'm reading Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant , and need to also find my next "adult" book to read. It's not as if my shelves are anywhere near empty (Suzanne, that is AMAZING! To finish all the books I own is a perennial resolution...), but sometimes an excess of choices can feel overwhelming!

Maybe I'll go with Walking to Gatlinburg by Howard Frank Mosher ... it's been sitting there unread for a while!

message 25321: by Kelly (last edited Jul 24, 2011 01:49PM) (new)

Kelly | 20 comments I am reading The Shadow of the Wind and Russian Winter, both of which I am enjoying. I can already tell that The Shadow of the Wind is going to be fantastic, so I am going to read it slowly so I can savor it. Next I have to read Room for my book club, which I am not looking forward to. I have two young boys (4 and 2) so I am not sure I can handle it.

message 25324: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i read The Book of Tomorrow from Cecelia Ahern this evening, and was slightly disappointed. it wasn't as engaging, or magical, as her other books. not a total wash, just not my favorite.

not sure what i'll grab next. we're reading Wicked for the next library selection, so i may start that. i also have Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend so i may try that since it's smaller.

message 25325: by Rayna (new)

message 25326: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Did not enjoy The Catcher In The Rye much. Next I'm picking up The Stand , finally.

message 25327: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw I'm reading the Master Butcher's Singing Club. Outstanding so far.

Susanna, you're the second person who said that about Catcher in the Rye. Maybe it's one of those books that is less relevant now. Interesting.

Mafalda...Are you liking this book? It is getting mixed reviews at the bookstore I work at, so I am not sure if I want to read it or not>

message 25334: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Doug, a friend of mine read it in high school almost ten years ago and loved it. But then again, I'm not in high school anymore, and I can't say for sure if I would have liked it even then.

message 25336: by Scott (new)

Scott | 257 comments I finished The Beach, which I really enjoyed.

Then I started It. This is my 3rd time through this one. I haven't read it in almost 20 years. This is my favorite King book. When I started reading it yesterday, I was getting the chills. This book scared the crap out of me when I first read it back in about '87. I think I was about 17 when I first read it.

Im about half way through and am in love with it. It's contains some of the best writing I have come across this year. It's prose is to-die-for. It's main character Della could be everyone....

Let me know if you end up checking it out!

I was also completely dragged into it but a lot of people need to read a bit more before it gets interesting, so hang on.

Though for some reason when everyone I know raves about a book it takes me forever to finally pick it up and read it. Had the Help sitting on my nightstand for 8 months or so and have never bothered to pick it up!

message 25350: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) I'm currently read the 2nd Thursday Next book, Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde. The first in the series, The Eyre Affair, I listened to on iPod over a year ago, so it's been a little difficult to get into the alternate world again, but after 170 pages I'm starting to enjoy it. If I was British and better read I'd probably get more of the jokes.
