I have the book Freedom, but it is so big that it scares me. Another book that I find too much to handle is The Historian. I have them both on my bookshelf. I am thinking about swapping them cause I don't think I will read them unless I find them in audio...

I didn't care for The Historian much. I just couldn't get into it at all.

I read House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III several years ago and enjoyed it very much.

Finished To the Lighthouse last night and started Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost."

I think we've all been there before. Kudos to you for realizing it, stepping back, and trying something else. I often don't do that, and then feel guilty bc I know my "attitude" probably factored into myself not enjoying it as much as I would have otherwise. Hopefully you'll be able to come back later and enjoy it more.

I have a used copy on order. Waiting for my shipment to arrive. I loved Cold Mountain and Gap Creek : The Story Of A Marriage was kindly recommended to me as a smiliar read.
I'm still reading The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood and just started Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend.

Kristi, you are absolutely right about attitude at the time of reading. I have thought about this a lot due to the fact that I hardly ever quit reading a book unless it is just terrible. I realized that I had been following the Casey Anthony trial very closely and was heartbroken about that entire situation. Also, I have a precious little grandson who is almost 3 years old and I found myself thinking about him and getting very sad.
Sorry if this is a ramble, but I'm glad I finally realized it and maybe I will finish Room later and maybe I won't.

I have now started Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. I'm only about 4% into it but it promises to be a good one for me.

Now I'm starting Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

Glad to hear you liked it, Susanna! :) Hope you like reading your first King!

I hope you like Ender's Game, too!
I'm actually reading my first King for the second time. When I first read Carrie, I was 11 years old. If you've read it, you probably have an idea what kind of an impact it had on me. It certainly hasn't lost its power in these 14 years between readings.

Thanks, Susanna!
Omg, I can't believe you read Carrie when you were 11. O.O I hope your second reading is less intense!

Prior to that, I caught up on some mysteries on my pile, the genre I most frequently read since I write them, too. I've read the following in July and recommend them all, though they all have very different tones:

Death and the Lit Chick: A St. Just Mystery

You know there are two more books in the series. I have the combined volume, The Gormenghast Novels: Titus Groan/Gormenghast/Titus Alone(1168 pages) of all three and I've been looking at it on the TBR shelf for several years. (sigh) I don't think I'm ready to make that commitment but I guess I could tackle it one book at a time, maybe. Enjoy!

I loved the movie, bought the book soon after seeing it, and it has stared at me (quietly) unread on my shelf for years since then. One day, I read!

I have read almost all of this series. They are all good; I think because she doesn't just crank them out- Sometimes it seems like ages between books.
I also read Crooked Letter,Crooked Letter. It was good and certainly held my interest but also predictable (but most in this genre are)

Agree and as a result I hesitate to read him again. Does anyone know if this is typical for this author?

The old one or the new one? I'm planning to watch the old movie after reading the book. Caine and Fraser just don't call out to me. I'm only about 40 pages in but so far I'm intrigued and hesitant. I didn't expect to love it but I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

Yes, I've decided to shelve Room for the time being. I am particularly sensitive to abuse of children, especially around that age, right now for some reason. I'll stick with some light reading until I feel better.

Beth, I hope I haven't replied to this earlier but

Susanna, The newer one--it's great. Michael Caine is excellent (he's a bit over the hill, but he could play Cyrus Duffleman better than most) and that other guy (Fraser?) perfectly captures the innocent American out to improve the world. . . and possibly, Gong Li is also in it? I'd like to see the old one, too. Happy reading.

I really enjoyed The Beach, Scott! Hope you'll like it.

Next I'll be reading one of King's Bachman books, The Long Walk .

Linda- That's a good question. I'm definitely not excited to pick up another of his is this is typical, but it'd be interesting to hear if his other books are better.

I LOVED Miss Peregrines! Its a great easy read that will keep you hooked! Enjoy :)

I read the reviews of Room and was convinced that I would 'like' it (or at least as much as you can like something that horrific), but I hated it. I dont remember having such strong feelings of dislike as I had for this one......then again, based on the reviews I am in the minority on that one

I did read Art of Fielding which is an Amazing Debut novel about baseball (which I hate). A must read!

Sheila,
The Kitchen House is a great book, hope you'll like it as much as I did. Happy reading.

ooh, good, thanks for the feedback, Sheila! Now I'm really looking forward to it.

Recommend.
