I didn't care for The Historian much. I just couldn't get into it at all.

I think we've all been there before. Kudos to you for realizing it, stepping back, and trying something else. I often don't do that, and then feel guilty bc I know my "attitude" probably factored into myself not enjoying it as much as I would have otherwise. Hopefully you'll be able to come back later and enjoy it more.

I have a used copy on order. Waiting for my shipment to arrive. I loved Cold Mountain and Gap Creek : The Story Of A Marriage was kindly recommended to me as a smiliar read.

I'm still reading The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood and just started Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend.

Kristi, you are absolutely right about attitude at the time of reading. I have thought about this a lot due to the fact that I hardly ever quit reading a book unless it is just terrible. I realized that I had been following the Casey Anthony trial very closely and was heartbroken about that entire situation. Also, I have a precious little grandson who is almost 3 years old and I found myself thinking about him and getting very sad.

Sorry if this is a ramble, but I'm glad I finally realized it and maybe I will finish Room later and maybe I won't.

message 25262: by Glenda (new)

Glenda (glenda-r) I just finished One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. I think everyone except me has read this series, at least a few books from it, but I am just now starting. The book was delightful and just what I needed.

I have now started Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. I'm only about 4% into it but it promises to be a good one for me.

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I just finished Empire Falls by Richard Russo, which I thought was not great. It is soooo slow and I felt like I was dragging myself kicking and screaming through the whole thing. Blah!

I'm actually reading my first King for the second time. When I first read Carrie, I was 11 years old. If you've read it, you probably have an idea what kind of an impact it had on me. It certainly hasn't lost its power in these 14 years between readings.

Omg, I can't believe you read Carrie when you were 11. O.O I hope your second reading is less intense!

message 25267: by Beth (new)

Beth I'm currently reading The Red Tent The Red Tent by Anita Diamant , a book that's been recommended to me by many and has been on my TBR list for awhile, and I'm finally getting around to it. So far, I've found it fascinating!

Prior to that, I caught up on some mysteries on my pile, the genre I most frequently read since I write them, too. I've read the following in July and recommend them all, though they all have very different tones:
Lucky You by Carl Hiaasen Lucky You
Death and the Lit Chick: A St. Just Mystery Death and the Lit Chick A St. Just Mystery by G.M. Malliet
Below Zero (Joe Pickett, #9) by C.J. Box Below Zero

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I just finished One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd which I really liked altho the ending was pretty violent which was kinda expected considering the time frame. I'm almost finished with Three Musketeers just another 100 pages. I'll be glad when its done and over with. I'm just now starting Titus Groan and not really sure what to expect from this one.

You know there are two more books in the series. I have the combined volume, The Gormenghast Novels: Titus Groan/Gormenghast/Titus Alone(1168 pages) of all three and I've been looking at it on the TBR shelf for several years. (sigh) I don't think I'm ready to make that commitment but I guess I could tackle it one book at a time, maybe. Enjoy!

I have read almost all of this series. They are all good; I think because she doesn't just crank them out- Sometimes it seems like ages between books.

I also read Crooked Letter,Crooked Letter. It was good and certainly held my interest but also predictable (but most in this genre are)

The old one or the new one? I'm planning to watch the old movie after reading the book. Caine and Fraser just don't call out to me. I'm only about 40 pages in but so far I'm intrigued and hesitant. I didn't expect to love it but I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I am still reading Mockingjay - its a pretty quick read and good so far. Next up is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which I read about in our local newspaper (book review) and went out and bought. Hopefully it will be good. It looks like a very different sort of book, with vintage pictures that are supposedly important to the telling of the story.

Yes, I've decided to shelve Room for the time being. I am particularly sensitive to abuse of children, especially around that age, right now for some reason. I'll stick with some light reading until I feel better.

Susanna, The newer one--it's great. Michael Caine is excellent (he's a bit over the hill, but he could play Cyrus Duffleman better than most) and that other guy (Fraser?) perfectly captures the innocent American out to improve the world. . . and possibly, Gong Li is also in it? I'd like to see the old one, too. Happy reading.

I read the reviews of Room and was convinced that I would 'like' it (or at least as much as you can like something that horrific), but I hated it. I dont remember having such strong feelings of dislike as I had for this one......then again, based on the reviews I am in the minority on that one

I'm so happy the Game of Thrones series started on tv otherwise I would not have known that this series existed! Loving it and a kind of fantasy novel that I enjoy.
