I couldn't finish The Book Thief. I think it was just time constraints so I'm planning on trying again at some point.

Karen M | 1956 comments Newbie here. I'm just about finished with Not That Kind of Place by Frances Fyfield and am about 1/3 done with Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier which is really a lovely book.

message 24656: by Colene (new)

Colene Hardy (colenehardy) I'm reading The Black Dahlia for my book club. Not a huge fan - it never takes me this long to read a book. Maybe it's just because it's not something I would normally gravitate to, or maybe it's just not that good? I don't know.

I'm also listening to Edgar Sawtelle (long drives to work); so far, so good. I really love some of his word choices. He uses paradox well.

Linda | 887 comments Started Zeitoun by Dave Eggers yesterday and am finding it fascinating. Have never read anything by Dave Eggers before, but am finding his style easily engaging.

message 24658: by Maria (new)

Maria Aenlle | 9 comments I think the Black Dahlia was also made into a movie. I remember it lightly. Am I right?

message 24659: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Am (finally) starting Water for Elephants. I have been meaning to read this one for well over a year now. Figured now was as good a time as any, seeing as the movie hits theaters this weekend.

Paula | 1098 comments I'm looking forward to seeing "Water for Elephants" the movie. I think it's been long enough ago that I read the book that I won't be comparing it too much. : )

Venuskitten | 26 comments I am reading The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna. (I have read about one third of the book.). It is very well written, intelligent and cleverly constructed. From what I have read so far, it deserves it's Orange prize nomination. It is one of those rarecbooks that you do not want to end.

message 24669: by Blaine (new)

Blaine DeSantis I have started "The Sojourn" by Andrew Krivak. Is a tremendous novel about a young man who is born in America and ends up, due to a series of tragic events, back in Hungary which in turn takes him into World War 1.

The writing it tremendous the story has really kept me interested, and the book is only about 190 pages long, and as leader of a Book Club I think it is one our group will do next season.

message 24670: by Blaine (new)

Blaine DeSantis Have finished in the past week Nabuib Mahfouz's book "Miramar." What a great read. This gentleman won the Nobel Prize for literature and this is the first of his books that I have read. Set in Alexandria, Egypt this is a story told through the perspective of 4 different renters at a pension (boarding hotel). Very much symbolic of what was happening in Egypt in the later 1960's, and really gave a great perspective of all different influences that were pushing and pulling on the Egyptian government and society at that time, Only about 170 pages in length, the book is very easy to read, and the author uses Italics when describing a characters thoughts or background.

message 24671: by Alex (new)

Alex I've gone all historical! Have two books on the go, a non-fiction and a fiction.

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
Remember, Remember (The Fifth of November): The History of Britain in Bite-Sized Chunks by Judy Parkinson

Both are good reads so far!

I read the Segal years ago and liked it-- it's also inexplicably really stuck with me, for no discernible reason.

I don't usually respond to comments, but I read this book awhile back and was really struck by the author's conflicted back and forth about the subject. I didn't get the sense that she was really enthusiastic about this family and at times was struggling with completing the project altogether. This would have made a better medical journal article than a book.

Scott | 257 comments I just finished Mockingjay. I thought this was a good series especially for younger readers. I'm sure I'll have my kids read it when they get a little older.

Now I'm going to start American Gods.

message 24691: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I started reading Christopher Hibbert's The Borgias and Their Enemies: 1431-1519, prompted by the series that's airing on Showtime at the moment. It's an interesting read, especially as I don't know much about the Borgias save for the bare basics (it was all about the Medicis for me) xD

message 24692: by Aidan (new)

Aidan Bizony (aidanbizony) No, I am not currently reading The Town but am reading Bill Bryson's "A Walk in The Woods." Its seriously funny I suggest you try it out.
